28mm chainlink fencing

I've been neglecting this blog recently as I concentrated on AHPC XII. Last week's battle report had some fencing scenery which I made for the Challenge. My first idea was to use spare 20x100mm bases from Renedra. I also thought I could refashion the sprues as the posts. Here's my first frustrating attempt:

A lot of unsatisfying work to get to this.

Then! I recalled I own a 3D printer. I bodged some simple shapes together on TinkerCAD, an elementary browser-based 3D program.

I'm a 3D sculptor now

Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V

A couple of hours later I had all the fence posts I would need. Much easier than making them from sprue... The top arms were a bit long so I cut them to size. I made some corner bases from plasticard. I cut some aluminium mesh, and secured it with twists of wire. This was fiddly. Then I PVA'd some grit, and sprayed the whole thing grey. I slapped on some browns and orange, and finished the basework. VoilĂ !

Ready for priming

One has a hole

I think I should make a gate*. Maybe some signs which could be swapped out depending on the game I am playing.

* Opening or static? One gate or a pair?

Batman Season 2 Rogue's Gallery

I have found my painting mojo returning, and so here are some more bat-villains for your enjoyment. A few may be familiar, but most I wasn't aware of before doing a deep bat-dive last year. In no particular order:

White Rabbit

This lingerie-clad lady has the ability to literally be in two places at once.  While I respect the sculptor's attention to detail, I don't know where to look in the age of #MeToo. This character has more of a 1992 feel rather than 2012. Let alone 2020.

Catwoman

I started with dark grey and brought some highlights up to white, then used black and blue washes to give quite a satisfying and quick result. If anything, Batman has forced me to work on my approaches to black.

Hush: Batman #619 (2003)

Great White Shark

I know nothing about this guy.

The Ventriloquist and Scarface

Is Scarface a possessed gangster doll controlling a hapless victim, or is The Ventriloquist using a doll as an excuse?

Cluemaster

Cluemaster is a C-grade Riddler wannabe, which actually gives him some interesting motivations. He's also Stephanie Brown's father, and the reason behind her becoming Spoiler- because she wants to spoil his plans.

Poison Ivy

I'm happy with my approach to painting fiery red hair as well. Ivy comes with some big carnivorous plants.

Ultra-dogs

These should be useful generic big guard dogs for other games. I drybrushed a blue-grey over dark grey for their coat.

NoBody

Is it a silly name, or is it genius? The figure could pass muster as a Necromunda Spyrer or any type of cyber ninja.

KGBeast

Another silly name. His arm is a gun!

Owlman

This guy is a rogue from the Court of Owls, and claims to be Batman's brother. He's very monochrome, but I think the glowing eyes came out OK.

Carmine Falcone

Finally, Mr Falcone is a mob boss- nothing superhuman or quirky about him at all, which is deeply refreshing. I painted on the characteristic scars on his right cheek, but they don't show unless you really look closely.

Mystery Investigators

These intrepid souls are perfect investigators for Kooky Teenage Monster Hunters. I can also see them in a Mansions of Madness adventure- maybe where instead of going mad, you run away, or need to have a sandwich.

"Help me pull off Great Cthulhu's head- why, it's just that old Mr Lovecraft!"

These are from Hasslefree, and I really enjoyed painting the brighter colours. They were my entry for the AHPC VII theme round 'Character(s) and/or Scene from a Movie, TV Program, Book or Piece of Music', and I'm pleased to say I received third place!

Defenders of The Shire

Here they are, after several years of languishing and a few weeks of painting: my hobbits. On the one hand, I really look forwards to having a game with these little chaps, but on the other hand, every death will be an epic tragedy...

Here's what I painted this month:

Everyone except Bullroarer
Bullroarer, Fatty Bolger, Bullroarer again, Farmer Maggot, Paladin Took

Shirriffs

Archers and horn-blower

Militia

Here's my entire Shire Defender force with the eight archers I'd painted a few years ago, and Farmer Maggot's dogs. Not a 'legal' force if you're into that sort of thing. (Q: Why no Bullroarer? A: He's been dead 250 years!)

Farmer Maggot with Grip, Fang, and Wolf.
(Farmer Maggot drew the short straw when they were giving out twee hobbit names.)
"Don't trust black dogs with orange eyebrows"- Terry Pratchett.

And here's a special guest: Golfimbul meets Bandobras 'Bullroarer' Took and is about to be introduced to the civilised game of golf...

Well, thanks for following me on this month-long journey. I did enjoy painting this likeable and characterful force. I've needed your support and a deadline to get this project completed. Unfortunately, I didn't get any work done on my hobbit holes, and I really should prioritise them now.
