Parents Evenings
Upper School Parents Evenings will take place on Sunday 3rd March from 6.00-7.30 pm and on Thursday 7th March from 5.30-7.00 pm. There will also be a Moving Up evening for Year 4 parents on the Thursday from 4.50-5.20 pm in the Science Lab. For the information of parents new to the school there is no appointment system on these evenings and you may have to queue to see the members of staff you wish to talk to. Please make sure your child tells you who teaches them beforehand. As the time available has to be shared by many parents, please try to be brief. You should only attend on one evening. Please note the finishing times of these evenings as some staff have to be back on duty. We would advise you to arrive promptly. If parents attending on Thursday need to keep their children at school, they should sign in for supper and cover from the boarding house staff afterwards. Please collect day children from the Lower Common Room. There are no crche facilities for day children on Sunday evening. Day children may sit in the entrance hall whilst parents attend the meeting in the hall. Children should bring a book to read.
Long Exeat
Long Exeat begins at 4.00 pm on Friday 8th March. There are no after school activities on that day.
Eisteddfod & House Matches
Good luck to all the children taking part in the Thornbury Eisteddfod, both in Music and Speech & Drama. Due to so many children taking part in this event, the house matches scheduled for Saturday 2nd March have been postponed. However, we hope parents will bring their children back to school after the Eisteddfod as normal games will take place as usual.
Effort Certificate Winners
What a fantastic quarter the Upper School children have had with their effort marks. Every year group improved their average total effort mark and in Years 3, 4 and 8 every child improved their overall effort mark. Sixty nine percent of the children achieved 40 or more and another 17% achieved 37-40. The highest effort mark was an amazing 49 and the biggest improvement was +10. Congratulations to those two pupils in particular, what an outstanding achievement! The photograph shows some of the children with their certificates who achieved 43+ or an improvement of 6+. (Year 8 were in an exam so not able to be in the photo.) On behalf of all the teachers, I would like to thank the children in the upper school for such a good quarter. Mrs Dawes

Eisteddfod Speech & Drama
It has been a very busy term as we prepare for the Eisteddfod and the school play amongst other things. On Saturday the Eisteddfod begins with the Speech and Drama classes followed by musical performances beginning on Sunday. The standard in the Eisteddfod is always very impressive. TMS has a very good turn-out this year and the performances are polished and we hope that the children are looking forward to the adventure. Good luck to everyone who is taking part both in the Lower and the Upper Schools and we invite supporters to the Whitsun Hall, Hatch Community. Castle Street, Thornbury for a weekend of great poetry recitals, prose readings, acting and musical delights too. There are copies of the programme in the signing-in area, if you would like to pick one up. Ms Case

World Book Day
World Book Day is on next Thursday, 7th March. You should have received an email and paper copy of a message sent out by the English Department this week about this event and the events planned for the week following. If this communication has not reached you, please pick up a copy from the Signing in area or ask me for one. On World Book Day, we will all be dressing up in costumes of characters from books (fiction and non-fiction). There is no donation to charity this time, as we will be raising money for Clic Sargent, Roald Dahls Marvellous Childrens Charity and Readwell (books for children in hospital) through the Readathon which will be launched on World Book Day. This is a sponsored event and we will be collecting monies in after the Easter break. Children who are involved in the Eisteddfod Choir performances will need to be able to change into their uniforms including choir shirts and ties before they leave school to go to Thornbury. Please make sure they can quickly disrobe out of their costumes and dress themselves and that they are not wearing face paint, hair gel or spray hair colour. We will be running a number of activities to celebrate the day, including The Golden Ticket, the photograph competition, a national bookmark competition and the Great Book Swap. On 8th March, to continue our love of books, the book fair will be with us in the hall after school. All children will visit the Book Fair and will be able to select a book which will be charged to your account. If you do not want your child to buy a book, please send me an email to that effect. You are also invited to come and buy books after school. All purchases earn us commission for buying books for our own library. On 12th March, we welcome John Harris, a professional storyteller to the school and he will be mesmerising the children with his highly acclaimed storytelling. He will be selling his own books at the end of the day from 3.15 onwards and he will sign them for the children. I have sent home a list of the books which he will be selling and again, I will assume that your child can buy a signed book from him, unless you direct me otherwise. World Book Day is a really important occasion for sharing books with your children and for encouraging them to become hooked on reading. This has such an impact on literacy levels and on their personal development. Please celebrate the day with your children and help us to make it fun and worthwhile. Ms Case
Quiz Club at Badminton School
On Wednesday morning, I was really privileged to take a team of four children to the Quiz Club first round heat at Badminton School. The team was selected through quizzes held here at school and the members were chosen from Years 3 to 6. They were Joe Ancell, Annabel Sheppard, Adassa Walker and Aditi Mehendale. The Quiz was fantastic with questions pitched perfectly for the teams. All team members had to answer each question after conferring and their answers were recorded electronically through a handset. This meant that strategic voting was also part of the methodology in answering questions. The contest was very exciting with some very tense moments. Our position fluctuated during the competition but we were able to rise to second place by the end, just pipped to the post by Fairfield with the other six teams positioned variously behind us. What an exciting competition it was positively nail-biting at times! Well done to all of the children and thank you to the parents who came to support. Ms Case
U8 Netball Tournament
Well done to all the girls who played in the U8 tournament on Saturday. It was very cold but the girls enjoyed all their matches and gained valuable experience from playing. Thanks to all the parents who supported. Mrs Wakeling
