Boarders Canoeing Trip

On Sunday 19th May, the boarders, Mr Cann and Miss Taylor, went canoeing on the River Wye. We left at midday and arrived at the Monmouth canoe centre at about one oclock. We were kitted up with buoyancy aids, helmets and, of course, canoes. Our trip down the Wye lasted all of two and a half hours and everyone was very wet and very exhausted by the end of it. However, everyone enjoyed themselves and the trip was great fun. Alex Blackwell

Poolside News
Swimming Over the next few weeks the final Personal Best times are being taken in all strokes. So far, Olivia Campbell, complete with broken little finger, has broken two Under 11 records that have stood since the pool opened six years ago. Emma Neudegg has held the 25m Free and 50m free records since then. Olivia secured 16.4 seconds at 25m and 39.03 seconds for 50m free. Abigail Blackwell broke Alan Englands U11 record in backstroke; it now stands at 17 seconds. Well done, girls! An U11 team swam in a gala against the Downs School on Monday. All of Year 6 and Helena Brain, Ella Howard Robinson, Olivia Banks, Ellie Parker and Alex Grocott from Year 5 competed. We won, very narrowly, by 92 to 90 points but in truth both schools were evenly matched. There were some excellent swims and many first places. I would like to congratulate Alex Gooch and Olivia Campbell on captaining the boys and girls teams so professionally. Diving The annual diving competition is taking place at the moment to secure a place in the dive finals. Beth Pritchard equalled the school record with three stunning dives. Well done to all of you! Galas Thursday 6th June 4.00 pm - Years 7 and 8 Water Polo v the Downs School (h) (selected swimmers) Thursday 13th June 2.00 pm - Years 3-8 Severnside Swimming Gala. There is only one spot for each race and selection is on times only, i.e. only the fastest. The list will be published the first week back after half term. This is the most competitive gala of the year. Friday 14th June 4.00 pm - U9 and U11 away at Rosehill Westonbirt (selected swimmers). Please note that the Severnside Athletics are taking place on the same day. Mr Cann, Mr Jones and I are co-ordinating! Wednesday 10th July 11.30 am House Water Polo. All those not involved in the House Swimming and Diving Finals will have priority in this gala. Wednesday 10th July 2.00 pm House Swimming & Diving Finals Swimmers can be selected for a maximum of two races and have to earn the right to be selected for their Houses by virtue of their times. The dive final will be first at 2.00 pm prompt. Please note that ALL swimmers will have put points on the board for their Houses but anomalies do occur, e.g. a small number of swimmers in one age band in one House. All swimmers will be required at some point on the Wednesday to compete for their House. Lists will be made available by the end of June and distributed to classes, Houses, and House Captains and also displayed in the back lobby. Mrs Hinchliffe

Severnside Athletics Meeting at Beaudesert Park

We had a very successful and most enjoyable afternoon at Beaudesert Park last Saturday. It was great to see so many of our parents there to support us. They witnessed a series of super performances from our athletes. The following children won their respective events: Ana Sanchez (U14 Shot Putt), Max Curtis (U12 800m), Alex Grocott (U12 800m, 2nd race), Hugo Watts (U12 100m, 2nd race), Roland Juilhard (U12 Long Jump) and Bennie Sanzo (U10 600m). Bennie Sanzo and Ceredig Jones who came 1st and 2nd in the 600m were both inside Alex Grocotts (2012) U10 school record. The record now stands at an impressive 2 minutes 04 seconds. The highlight of the afternoon was the relays where our U11 team, Max Curtis, Tom Edwards, Oliver Shutt and Alex Grocott, won their race lowering the record to 1 minute 00.4 seconds. The U9 Boys were also victorious in their new school record which now stands at 1 minute 09.2 seconds. The team comprised Leonidas Lazarides, Angus Duncan, Ceredig Jones and Bennie Sanzo. There were seven schools at this meeting including Prior Park and Clifton College. Our athletes show great promise for the future. Mr Jones & Mr Cann

Music Department
House Music The House Music Competition on Thursday afternoon was really enjoyable with some stunning performances. Well done to all the House soloists! The event was adjudicated by teacher and cellist Mrs Helen Wallbridge and marks were very close. We all enjoyed the three Abba House songs (especially the parents!) but in the end Cunningham clinched the cup. Music Practice The competition was a reminder of the hard work needed to produce a really good performance so keep practising over half term, especially if you have an exam coming up. Lessons start again on Monday 3rd June. Mrs Warn

Youth Speaks First Round

For the last two weeks, Year 6 has been beavering away trying to prepare for the first round of the school heats for the Rotary Club Youth Speaks Competition. This is a public speaking competition which has been won by TMS for the last two years. Children have to speak for between 5 and 10 minutes on a subject of their choice, in the style of an after-dinner talk. They are allowed cue cards but they are not to read from a script. They have to engage the audience with a minimal amount of props and they must not use electronic displays. The first round meant that everyone had to speak in front of the class, Mrs Dawes and myself. This was quite nerve-racking for some. Everyone was involved in the judging and all marks were taken into account to select the top ten who will deliver their presentations again on June 11th to the Rotary judges. One person will be selected from this group to go through to the final. The quality of talks was so good, we would not want to have to make decisions in the next round! All of the children are to be congratulated for interesting and well-prepared talks which we all enjoyed very much. The ten winners in this round are : Henry Allan-Jones, Lucy Allan-Jones, Abby Blackwell, Olivia Campbell, Tom Edwards, Alex Gooch, Antonia Hopcraft, Roland Juilhard, Roshan Patel, Beth Pritchard. Good luck for the next round! Ms Case and Mrs Dawes
