Headmasters Corner
Please forgive me for starting with sport again this week but the excitement of last Saturdays matches is still buzzing
around the school. Our girls tried a new sport of water hockey and, whilst not an official sport, they performed very well
indeed against some tough opposition. They had intended to play the traditional version but so heavy was the rain that
normal conditions were not possible. Both teams played with a sense of purpose and the sense of team spirit was evident
to see. The U11 boys produced a super win over Sidcot in a very close match with once again the boys desire to play
together being the key factor in their success. The U13 boys, however, played possibly the best school match I have ever
seen. An unheard of score line of 0-0 at half time was soon followed by our boys conceding threes tries and going 17-0
behind, but what followed I feel sums up the spirit that exists amongst our children at the moment. Two excellent tries
followed with a third being placed in the last few seconds of the game and with a nervous silence descending upon
Tockington, and all eyes watching to see if he could do it, Max showed his leadership qualities by calmly placing the
conversion between the posts giving the boys a 19-17 win. This was excellent but the natural instinct for each boy to so
enthusiastically congratulate each other was most impressive.
The theme of team spirit didnt end there as our General Knowledge took to the road on Sunday after the Remembrance
Service at St Marys and headed off to Monmouth. Ms Case has a full summary of the afternoon later in this edition but I
congratulate Tom, Henry, Alex and Roshan on an excellent team performance that saw them just being pipped by the
overall winners Abberley Hall after wins over St Richards and Monmouth. I thank Ms Case and all the parents that came
to support.
Well done to Year 1 on producing such an entertaining assembly this morning; as ever they were confident and a pleasure
to hear and watch. As too were all the children that took part in the Informal Concert today. There were some new faces
appearing and I particularly congratulate them as I know how nerve racking it can be.
We look forward to seeing you at tonights Bonfire Evening and hope that the wind and rain give way to a dry and clear
evening. This, however, I am assured will happen as I am told, its all in the planning!
Mr Jones Row for Rob
(Robert Camm, Old Tockingtonian 19962005)
Mr Jones (JJ) passed the 1,000,000 metre mark in mid-October so is well on his way to
achieving his goal of reaching 1,400,000 metres by the end of February 2015.
Rob appreciates all the effort that the fundraisers are making. He was a keen rower. Due to
all the efforts made, despite being tetraplegic, he is attending Bristol University and getting
out more. Rob has 12 full time carers looking after his need but is determined to achieve a
level of independence.
Thank you if you have supported JJ, you have been most generous! Please feel free to visit
the main website at http://www.campaign4rob.co.uk. Follow
link to JJs row and the donation page (your caring site).
Thank you very much for your support.

Year 1 Science
New Library Opening for All Parents
Year 1 worked very hard on their visit to the science lab.
They learned about shadows and even the words opaque,
translucent and transparent. They had time to create their
own shadows and see how moving different objects can
change their shadows. Well done, Year 1!
I would like to invite you along to enjoy the newly
refurbished library! The library will be open from 3.15 pm to
4.00 pm on Wednesdays for the remainder of this term.
Every child in the Lower School is welcome to take out two
books and parents/carers of Nursery children are welcome
to come along and share a book and the comfy cushions.
Upper School parents are welcome to browse and grab a
book after match cuppas!
We look forward to saying hello to you in the library.
Sally Solomon (parent), Emily Tucker (Y2) and Sophie
Tucker (Owl).
Monday Running Club
A record 46 finely tuned athletes took part in our fun filled 40
minutes of sprints and chases around top field. Well done to
all those who took part.
Congratulations to our committee members Alex Jacobi,
Antonia Hopcraft-Guest, Tom Edwards and Henry AllanJones.
Tockington Titbits
During half term Angus Duncan completed his RYA 3 in
Dingy Sailing and won a Country Tour Tennis Tournament
for the under 10's mixed singles, winning every set.

Cross Country
Well done to all the Year 3 and 4 pupils who represented the school on Monday in our cross country match. The
outstanding performance was Alys Wakelings superb run to win the race in a 35 strong field. She ran from the front and
was strong enough to win by 10 metres from some very good athletes. Katie Shutt came home in 4th place.
In the boys race, TMS lost out by three places in the team event, but performed creditably with Archie Symonds leading
the Tockington athletes, placing 3rd. Harry Mather was 4th and Logan Fitzpatrick 6th.
This was the first time that the Year 3s had represented the school in cross country.
Alys Wakeling
Krystof Soukup-Carne certainly loves his judo!
Last Sunday he took part in another
competition together with James and Henry
Packham.

Year 2 Visit the SS Great Britain
Year 2 had a fabulous trip to the SS Great Britain this week. We participated in an engineering workshop and learned to
hot rivet We also travelled back in time to 1843 to help launch the ship.
Eddie our guide (and new best friend) thanked the children for making his year as they were so well-behaved, polite and
enthusiastic. He said it made his job a joy to do.
The children were also very popular with a group of German tourists who were impressed with how smart they looked and
how well-mannered they were. Well done, Year 2!

Cognitive Ability Test
On Thursday 20th November pupils in Years 5-8 will be sitting a Cognitive Ability Test. There is nothing to be concerned
about and no revision is required. The test is a development from the VR and NVR tests we have done previously. It is in
the main to help identify how our pupils learn best and will be very beneficial for our teaching staff to plan efficiently for
individuals.
Prep Schools Challenge
Tom Edwards, Alex Gooch, Roshan Patel and their captain, Henry Allan-Jones,
competed in the Prep Schools' Challenge on Sunday at Monmouth School for Boys.
They won two out of three of their quizzes and scored an impressive total of 570
points but they were pipped at the post and robbed of their place in the semi-final.
They acquitted themselves very well indeed and very confidently won many of the
starter questions. Well done to all of the boys for a very creditable performance in
the quiz.
Kings Taunton Strings
Milkshake Monday Morning
Last Friday our string players had a great time at Kings College, Taunton. We teamed up with other schools and we
played and learned three pieces in a few hours: The Can
Can, Spooks and Magic Carpet Ride. At the end of the day
we performed all three of our pieces in a concert before
heading back to school. During the day, we listened to the
King's School string orchestra, learned some new, useful
and interesting bowing and pizzicato techniques, and we all
had a great time.
Year 3 had a lovely Milkshake Monday Morning with the
great story of Six Dinner Sid and delicious banana milkshakes and biscuits. They enjoyed sinking into the comfy
beanbags and listening to Sid's antics. Many of them were
not familiar with this story, so it was nice to share it with
them. Many thanks as always to the kitchen staff and Mrs
Baglin and Mrs Edwards who give so much assistance to
the library.
A Taste of India
As part of their geography topic,
Year 4 enjoyed a taste of India this
week. We lit the diva lamps, shared
some sweet jelabi and mini rsguila,
drank chai and wished each-other a
belated happy Diwali.
