Headmasters Corner
As always there are so many congratulations this week and so many worthy of high praise that it is hard to place them in order. Congratulations to Larry Williamson for being offered a place at Wycliffe for Year 9. Congratulations to Charlie, Bennie and Jessie Sanzo who have all been selected to represent the county in tennis. To have three county tennis players in one school is quite an achievement but three in one family could perhaps be something of a record. On the sporting front the children have performed extremely well this week. Last Saturday the Under 8 Netball team impressed by winning three matches; on Wednesday the First XI Football team drew against Sidcot whilst the Under 11s won both of their games. Meanwhile the Under 9s beat Hatherop Castle. It should be remembered that the Under 9s also consists of some Under 8s! In the U9 Severnside Netball Tournament our team won their matches against Dean Close and Clifton and finally the TMS Relays were extremely successful but a full list of results was in too late for this weeks edition of the Tracker. A huge thank you and well done to all the pupils and staff for making World Book Day such an enjoyable one. Special mention should be given to Ms Case who inspired us all. More details and photographs can be found on Page 5. Finally, congratulations to Miss Nicole Fowler, our gap student, who has an unconditional offer to university in September.

John Muir Award

Pupils in Year 8 were recently awarded their Discovery Award from the John Muir Trust in recognition of their awareness of and responsibility for wild places. Last term they spent a week in Stackpole for Outdoor Learning in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. During their week they completed their CE Geography Enquiry on the sand dunes at Freshwater West. Seren Clayton was given the highest mark for her outstanding enquiry on the dunes. She scored 19/20, which constitutes 20% of her CE mark in the Summer Term exam. Year 8 also undertook a beach clean at Broad Haven as well as canoeing around Pembroke Castle, mountain biking and walking 16 km on the coastal path. Congratulations, Year 8!

Year 2 News
A big WELL DONE to all of Year 2 for fantastic effort in their Science lesson about friction. A special mention should go to Kaya for using appropriate vocabulary, for example 'energy used' and 'motion' and to Henry for giving a succinct definition of the term 'braking distance' to the class. Keep it up Year 2! Year 2 are going on a surprise trip on Tuesday 11th March. As it is a normal school day they should come in school uniform. Congratulations also to Abigale Wickersham for her beautiful DT work.

Swimming News
Wednesday 5th March was a record day for swimmers at TMS with Reception completing their 5 metres. Every child in the school from Reception to Year 8 is now swimming! Congratulations to Rhea Fernandez and Jeanne Veron who swam 25ms on their front and back in style for the first time I am very proud of you both. The Swimarathon was huge fun and the teams should be congratulated on giving up time and energy for the Rotary Club charities, especially this year Alzheimers Research. The senior team (Imogen Rees, Olivia Campbell, Tom Edwards, Oliver Shutt, Abigail Blackwell and Alex Gooch) swam a magnificent 2nd half of their 55 minute slot to equal the school record of 2013 with 157 lengths. The junior team (Jonathan Baguley, James Allen, Helena Brain, Ellie Parker, Rachel Shutt and Ella Howard-Robinson) were keen to break the school record and swam at a consistently fast pace. The new record is now 144, beating the old record by three lengths. Thanks for all the fun, dancing, silly hats and parental support it was a great night! Mrs Hinchlifffe

Milkshake Monday Morning Year 5 Visit The Matthew

As part of their History studies, Year 5 visited The Matthew, ship of John Cabot, based in the docks in Bristols historic harbour. The weather gods were kind to us and we all enjoyed a trip round the docks taking in sights such as the SS Great Britain. The children were shown what life was like for Cabots men as they sailed to discover Newfoundland in 1497 and how important such expeditions were for the merchants of Bristol. I was very proud of how they all conducted themselves and encouraged by the questions they both asked and answered! Mr Cann Milkshake Monday Morning came with a taste of summer this week for Year 1 as they had strawberry milkshakes with delicious ice cream and strawberry in them. They listened to stories read to them by Mrs Edwards and as you can see from the photo, they were enthralled! Thank you to Mrs Edwards, Mrs Baglin and the lovely ladies in the kitchen, all of whom make it all possible Ms Case

English Department News

Eisteddfod The Eisteddfod Speech and Drama competition is fast approaching with just one more week to rehearse. Do please practise your poems, readings and acting in the following week as much as you can. Readathon We have launched the Readathon Sponsored Read today. We are hoping to beat our total of just over 700 last year. All proceeds go to charities for sick children and their families. Please look in book bags for the sponsorship forms. We will be collecting sponsorship just after the Easter holidays in the first week back to school after 24th April. This is a great cause in so many ways. Frequently we hear these days the link between regular reading for pleasure and attainment at school across the curriculum. Please encourage your children to make realistic and attainable targets for the six weeks of the Readathon and support them in their reading. Thank you. Book Fair The Book Fair arrives in school next week. This is a great way for us to celebrate books and to earn free books for the library. Every child will visit the Book Fair and will buy a book. IF YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR CHILD TO BUY A BOOK, PLEASE LET ME KNOW BY EMAIL OR PLANNER. Once again, your child has information about the Book Fair in their book bags. Quiz Club On Monday three children from Years 4, 5 and 6 went to Badminton School for the Quiz Club Regional Heats to test their General Knowledge against seven other teams. The quiz was challenging and exciting and the children loved it. All of them said that they hoped that next year would see them in the competition again. This time, the team started off slowly and then really pulled themselves through with the more challenging questions. They did not qualify for the next round but the spirit of the team was perfect and it was a pleasure to take them. Well done to Alex Jacobi, Isabel Browning and Otis Walker. Ms Case
