Making Music Day

The Boarders had a fantastic musical day on Sunday 3rd March. In the morning we attended our local Eisteddfod, part of Thornbury's Music Festival and were treated to some fantastic 'Songs from Shows' from young singers, including pupils of Tockington Manor, who won lots of trophies on the day! After a delicious Sunday lunch we set up our own Samba Band in the school hall and brought a little of South America to Tockington mixing a variety of rhythms on Tockington's Samba instruments. We then got 'crafty' and made a variety of junk percussion instruments including metal shakers, miniature drums and our own version of a Samba cuica drum which make fantastic chicken sound effects, all ready for Easter! The children were a joy to work with and we all had a thoroughly enjoyable day! M Warn

Book Fair
You will know that this week, since World Book Day, we have been celebrating reading and story-telling. All children have visited the Book Fair which has caused untold excitement. There has been great enthusiasm for the books and the children have really enjoyed sharing the experience of browsing for books with their friends. There has been a great deal of discussion of likes and dislikes and recommendations and arrangements for swapping and the buzz created by the Fair has been really uplifting. Whats more, your generosity has earned us a whopping 418.60 in commission for free books for the library and classrooms. Teachers will be making choices over the next week, so your children benefit again. I cant thank you and all the teachers who took their children to the Book Fair enough, for giving up precious time and money to nurture a love of reading. Ms Case

John Harris, Storyteller

On Tuesday, we had a great day with our visitor, John Harris. He told stories throughout the day to all year groups (except year 1 who was on a trip to the MShed). His style was lively and energetic and the children responded really well to him. He made them laugh, he filled them with suspense and he made them jump out of their skins from time to time. He gave advice on storytelling, explaining that if you want to convince your audience and make them believe in your story, you need detail. He took us all on imaginative journeys and the children were enthralled. He then signed his own books for the children; two copies of each of which were donated to the library. We had a great day and again, we thank you for supporting this event so whole-heartedly. Ms Case

Eisteddfod
A number of our top-scoring children in the Eisteddfod have been asked to perform to a larger audience at the Eisteddfod Concert on Wednesday 20th March and we wish them all an enjoyable evening and every success. Ms Case

Readathon
By now, you might have had an opportunity to sit down with your child and decide on which books they propose to read during the next few weeks for the Readathon Sponsored Read. Please try your best to get sponsors for your children ask grannies and granddads, aunties and uncles to spend a few pennies, supporting worthy causes and helping your child to nurture a love of reading. All you need to do is to fill in the little booklets you were given with the titles of books which you think your child can read in five weeks. Make sure sponsors give their full addresses and tick the Gift Aid boxes on the sponsor forms. All monies need to be in on or around the first day of the Summer Term, April 23rd. Many thanks for time given to help sick and needy children in this country. Ms Case
