The Weekly Newsletter of Tockington Manor School

14th March 2014

Headmasters Corner
It is hard to know where to start with so many things happening in the school worthy of significant praise. This year is proving to be highly successful and this week we say well done to Max Curtis (Year 7) who has been awarded a deferred Scholarship for entry in to Year 9 at Colstons. We look forward to seeing him go from strength to strength as he finishes Year 7 and Year 8 with us. This week saw a number of our children compete in the Annual Eisteddfod Competition. Our three pianists took the honours straight away last Saturday when they won the Piano Trio competition by scoring the highest marks of the day. Well done to Aditi, Lucy and Olivia! A huge thank you to the Music Department for their many successes this week. A full list will appear in next weeks Tracker. Congratulations to Abigail Blackwell on being appointed to the position of Head of Boarding. She has been a wonderful role model so far this year and her leadership qualities have been a shining example of everything we strive for here at Tockington Manor. Congratulations to Adassa Walker who was awarded 92% Distinction in the RSL Level 1 Popular Music Performance (Grade 1) and Popular Vocals (Grade 1) exams recently. She really deserved this mark as she has worked hard and consequently improved to such a high standard. Thank you so much and congratulations to all who took part in last weeks Tockington Relays. This was a truly inspirational afternoon with 418 children taking part from 13 different schools. Mr Jones has placed more information in this weeks newsletter but I would particularly like to draw your attention to the Under 9 Boys and under 11 Girls who broke the course records and the Under 11 Boys who equalled the school record. Thank you to all the staff for their help but praise must be given to Mr Jones on his impeccable organisation. I would like to invite you all to pop into the main Manor House to see the fabulous mosaic that all the children in the school have been busy working on this term. I would like to thank all the children and Mrs Martin but sadly I have to announce that Mrs Martin will be moving on at the end of this term to spend more time with her daughter. She has been an excellent Art Teacher here and I know is very much admired and liked by everyone. I shall be making an announcement at the end of next week about her successor.

Year 2 Workshop
Please note that the Year 2 Exploratorium Electricity will take place on Monday 17th March and not on Tuesday as published in the calendar. These are some of the ideas elicited from Year 2 prior to them starting their new science module on electricity. Big thinking! Power comes from the pylon and the wires send messages. If we didnt use electricity, we would be bored all day sleeping and being lazy. Electricity is stored in a power station. Electricity is inside batteries. It is something that powers the TV. You get electricity from power plants that generate power. If you get a really bad electric shock you could die

Sport Relief - Friday 21st March

Pupils and staff can come to school in sports kit, preferably red and white, on 21st March. It would be great if they had a Sport Relief T-shirt, but this is not necessary. Everyone is requested to bring in 2 or more as a donation towards the cause. We will attempt to run the mini-course a number of times each during the day. Nursery and Lower School are invited to take part. How far as a school can we run in a day? Parents are welcome to join in the run. A clipboard with names and a tally sheet will be available on the bridge on Top Field.

Year 7 Geography Enquiry

After interviewing 436 shoppers at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway, Year 7 have received their studies back after marking. The project was on Out of Town Shopping. The quality of the enquiries was outstanding. The children have taken a great deal of care and researched around the study, enabling them all to achieve an A Grade. All the marks were about 90% and six of the class gained 100% for their projects. Congratulations, Year 7!

Look @ My Work Assembly

Mrs Littlejohn visited us for our Look@MyWork assembly this Tuesday and told us all about the business of Buying and Merchandising. She explained how she often travels to huge trade fairs in China and in Germany where she has to shop with an eye to what will sell in the family-run business which she works for Leekes. She explained how decisions were made about what to buy and what quantity of products to buy. She had a little help with this from Alex Ganfield and Iona Campbell and a set of six cushions. We all enjoyed finding out about how you can make a career in the Retail trade. A huge thank you to Mrs Littlejohn.

Milkshake Monday Morning

Year 2 spent their Monday break-time in the library enjoying delicious strawberry milkshakes and a great story read by Mrs Edwards. This photograph shows them all rapt in the story and having a very nice time. When they finished, they went on a Wheres Wally hunt in the library and found them all most successfully. Thanks go to the teachers, kitchen staff and Mrs Baglin and Mrs Edwards, who make it all possible.

The Carnival & Other Animals

An exciting musical event is happening locally at 7.30 pm on Saturday 22nd March in St Marys Church, Olveston. Old Tockingtonian Jacob Warn and his Dad Andy are presenting another Windy Strings Concert at St Mary's. The concert features guitar and recorders of all sizes as well as a complete arrangement of 'Carnival of the Animals' with poetry and shadow puppets (courtesy of Mrs Warn and her daughter Hannah!). It promises to be a fun and exciting evening and is suitable for all! There are other concerts in the series if you can't make this date, please see their website for details: www.windystrings.co.uk. Tickets are available from Mrs Warn or you can buy them at the door.

Mr Jones & Sport Relief

Mr Jones is working hard on his rowing machine. Have you had a guess yet? The nearest guess will win a meal for two at the Swan Inn, Tockington. Thank you very much to all those who have given towards this worthy cause. Forms are available from outside the office or from Mr Jones.

Year 2 Trip to Raglan Castle

Year 2 had a super, chilly morning at Raglan Castle. We identified lots of features of the castle and all thought it would have been great to live there.

Book Fair
The children had a lovely time choosing books at the Book Fair this week and there is a buzz about reading around the school, which is great. We earned 365.91 in free books for the school library, which we look forward to spending as part of our ongoing refurbishment. We are so grateful to all of you who helped to make this a great success. With all of these great books to choose from, the children should have plenty to read for the Readathon. I hope that sponsorship is underway and the children are excited about raising money for sick children through reading. You are all welcome to visit the library to browse the bookshelves with your children. Many thanks for all of your support and well done to the children!

TMS Cross Country Relays

What a fabulous afternoon! Great weather and outstanding performances and effort from all of our athletes. There were 428 competitors from 16 schools taking part. We saw three records broken, all by TMS teams, namely the U9 Boys, U11 Girls and U11 Boys. This was the 12th TMS Relays and one of the most successful. Our U11 Girls team (Dalis, Ellie, Jessie & Helena) performed superbly, running 11 minutes 50 seconds, breaking the record by 11 seconds. They were 30 seconds quicker than the H<SG Girls, the winners of the U13 race! Our U9 Boys (Otis, Jake, Freddie & Peter) ran an outstanding race, breaking the record by 13 seconds. It now stands at 12 minutes 13 seconds. The U11 Boys team (Alex Jacobi, Alex Grocott, Ceredig & Bennie) ran 11 minutes 25 seconds, equalling the TMS record from 2013. Congratulations to all those who took part. Keep training!
