gorhill has added a new scriptlet to uBlock Origin named prevent-navigation. The scriptlet prevents a page from navigating to any URL patching the provided pattern.
This scriptet was added to AdGuard last month.
One usage of this scriptlet is to combat pages which redirect to another page when an adblocker is detected.

So, I'm trying . Installed via packed on sid. This is done through something I didn't even knew existed: `extrepo`. There's a lot of 3rd party software there, I didn't even had the time to look at it all: salsa.debian.org/extrepo-team/

At first launch nothing out of the ordinary happened. A normal like window appeared. Except for two things:

          * is the default search engine
          * is already installed.

          So far so good.

We recently came across an amazing project called uBlockOrigin & uBlacklist Huge AI Blocklist.

                  As they describe it, it's:

There's something really lovely at the top of the uBlock Origin filter list, just under the description, that brought us a small bit of very-much-needed joy, and we wanted to share it here with others 🫶

@aral You must be using only network-based ad blocking (not browser-based ad blocking), or using an inadequate blocker or a browser which doesn't support full-featured blockers. The malicious script causing the redirect is already blocked by this built-in filters.

It looks like you're using Safari. Try Firefox or one of its AI-free derivatives instead, and install uBlock Origin. We can't stop certain developers deploying anti-consensual code, but with the right tools, we can stop that code from running. IndieWire, Rolling Stone, Variety, and (mentioned by someone else here) Slashdot all work fine with a full-featured content blocker.

The key for this particular malicious script is to have a content which can block scripts by their contents, not just their network location.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter to the advertising agencies whether work: what matters is whether the agencies can persuade clients that adverts work. As long as they can do that, and as long as we have inadequate legislation, the zone will be flooded with adverts.

The question of whether adverts actually work is notoriously hard to answer, because it's difficult to tie a sale to an advert. That's one reason companies track us so hard on the Web — to see which campaigns are most effective — but we can defeat that tracking with a good such as and (in jurisdictions with a semblance of privacy legislation) by denying permission to track.

They're shoving this stuff in our faces the way they shove ads in our faces, against our wishes and with no clear benefit to us. We don't need to accept either, and both are quite dangerous.

Ads are part of the surveillance apparatus and also function to commodify everything while stripping people of self esteem. What's AI's draw for the powers that be, do you think?

Regarding the last boost (Google activating and opting people into Gemini AI features in gmail), I've found uBlock Origin does a good job hiding all the obnoxious AI boxes, nudges and icons. Install the extension, right click the offending element, and choose "Block element". The uBlock Origin user interface is pretty self explanatory as far as setting up new filters goes. There's a Preview button that lets you see if your new filter really is getting rid of the thing. You can click Pick to try selecting a slightly larger context to get rid of something.

Here's how Google Scholar looks once you add these rules to uBlock Origin.

The Google Scholar landing page, gloriously clean and free of any mention of AI.

If you're tired of seeing that AI nag on Google Scholar, here are two uBlock Origin rules that make it disappear (for now):

                                                          https://scholar.google.com
                                                          scholar.google.com;https://scholar.googleblog.com/2024/11/ai-outlines-in-scholar-pdf-reader-skim.html"]

                                                          scholar.google.com.gs_red

The first line blocks the linked text. The second line blocks the red "New!". That one is likely to malfunction and catch other, possibly interesting stuff so you can omit that if you don't mind seeing a red "New!" without anything after it.

NB: my server misinterprets some of this text, and inserts a semicolon where there should not be one. Change href="; to href=", removing the semicolon, in the rules above before using them. The URL should come right after the open quote, with no semicolon ahread of it.
