Paint Table Saturday 256 - Finished Apes, Satarted Umber Hulks

Hi All,

Busy week, or so it seemed. I have a lot on my mind I want to share, but the days seem to get away from me as far as writing things up and sharing them.

First cross country meet of the season today. My son and two of his female team mates competed today. It was hot but they all had great runs.

On to the minis. First, earlier in the week I finished those Eureka armed Gibbons.

I'm happy with how they turned out, even if I did do the walnut paint wash on the fur of a couple of them too dark.

Next, on the D&D Umber Hulks, I was able to use putty to fill in a few gaps that were bothering me and glue and spackle them on their bases. I am still hopeful I can finish their ground work and get them primed this weekend.

Hopefully I can also get these next couple of blog posts out and release the Oldhammer in the New World Zine so that I can get on the next one to help get us fired up for 2019.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

Paint Table Saturday 254 - Still Apes (Gibbons)

Hi All,

Minor progress on the gibbons. All base colors done and a second coat on the uniforms. As usual I leave the groundwork for last. I still need to touch up the flesh color here and there before I move on to highlights. I also chose yellow for the spot color on the beret and the RPG rounds. I may also call it out on the badges of the ones wearing caps.

I've been hoping to blog more and get the long (very long) overdue Oldhammer in the New World Zine out, but I just haven't seemed to get the time to finish things lately.

Anyway, we shall see what the next week brings.

Happy painting everyone.

Paint Table Saturday 253 - Space Apes

Hi All,

Although the progress has been minimal, there has been some.

I may have some finger grease on the lens. I think I also need to try auto focus, my eyes don't work well enough for manual focus.

I got the uniforms and flesh base color done on almost all of them. I missed an ear or two (not all of them have ears showing) and their fingers and toes can be tricky to find when they're primed black.

No added work on the Umber Hulks.

You may also see some Uscarl squats on the bench. I needed to make room in my washtub for the Umber Hulks, so they are not necessarily next.

Our plan is to write up 500 point forces for the sequel to the Wizard Battle, but we'll see what points value makes sense once we run the numbers. Of course we could just throw stuff down on the table, but I want my son to get the full experience of Oldhammer. Back then I made way more lists than I ever played games. I think it also gets you looking through the books more to find the special rules and points values for things.

Happy painting.

Paint Table Saturday 252 - Probably a bad idea

Hi All,

Not a lot of progress this week, but I have a plan for what I want to paint.

I had already been planning to paint the Eureka gibbons. I added the last space ape to them as I feel like, size wise, he matches them.

I'm also try to prep 10 of these Nolzur's D&D miniatures for the Ambull Safari scenario. Looking at them now, I'm seeing a lot of mold lines. I've started trimming them off with an X-acto knife. They appear to be coated in something to help them take paint. Of course my trimming the mold lines is peeling that off, so we shall see if it causes problems.

Over on the OWAC facebook group some people are chomping at the bit to have a group painting "challenge" again. So I've signed on with these 20 figures to do a mini thing. I'm not super into it, but I'm trying not to be a stick in the mud.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

Happy painting.

Paint Table Saturday 251 - Actual finished figures!

Hi All,

It seems like ages since I've had finished figures to post on a Saturday. I actually finished these guys last night.

The first two Gorillas from the space apes set from Eureka. For all of these photos I used my cell phone on "pro" camera settings and then manually fine tuned them a little in Snapseed, no presets. I meant to look at ape names from the Planet of the Apes franchise of movies (the 70's ones) but haven't had time.

The Empirical Absolution Squad + 1. I kept with the color scheme laid out on my Psycho Sam (Dahn Alt Rump) and I think I achieved a pretty good match. The Psi Judge, I believe a Mongoose figure, was something I won in a blog contest years ago. I decided not to resculpt her dodgy right hand. I'm not totally sure if I like what my matte varnish has done to all the gold metallics.

(Apparently if I type Psy Judge I get articles about the guy who sang Gangnam Style. It appears the figure is a Mongoose Psi Judge Anderson, someone wrote an article here.)

Commandant Xerof Uks leads Team Terra: Galactic Police in rooting out Xeno scum.

Lastly I put down some base colors on the chimpanzees from the space apes. I suppose one could make the case that the gent on the left is also a gorilla, but he seems smaller than the other two. I did not paint their hair yet. I was going to go with darker browns.

Any way, thanks for looking and commenting.

Happy painting.

Paint Table Saturday 250 - Team Terra and Space Apes

Hi All,

I know, it's Sunday. This is where I left the figures yesterday.

Team Terra is mostly the Empirical Absolution squad from Foundry with a Mongoose Psy Judge. They will join the Psycho Sam figure from Oldhammer USA 2015.

Got most of the faces and space suits on the gorillas. I mixed some dark blue with some darker browns to get the flesh tones. Thanks for the tip Asslessman. I'm trying to do the color scheme as an homage to the uniforms from Conquest of the Planet of the Apes from 1972. As you may recall the gorillas wore red, chimps green, and orangutans a sort of orange brown, I might go khaki instead. I have these two gorillas, two I'm calling chimps and one shorter one which seems similar to the other gibbons I have.

So there you have it.

I hope to have these guys knocked out this next week.

Happy painting.

Paint Table Saturday 249 - Team Terra, Safari Giant and Space Apes

Hi All,

For some reason there don't seem to be enough hours in the day lately. We've all been getting back into the swing of being at school and it has been pretty hot temperature-wise. We are finally getting some rain though.

Anyway here are the same figures, in more or less the same state that they were in last time I showed them to you.

I also got out my various Eureka apes to finish the ground work on and perhaps base coat later today.

I'll try to be better about posting regularly and getting everyone caught up on the WFRP campaign. I also want to get back to the Oldhammer in the New World Zine. There's talk of another event in the Jerz in November.

Thanks for looking.

Happy painting.

Paint Table Saturday 184 - A little progress since last week

Hi All,

I got excited about my progress for last week, but I still have a lot to do.

So a little more done on the Knights for Breaking Lances. I feel like I may have skipped some important prep steps, the grain lifts a little when it gets wet. The Reaper paints also get absorbed into the wood more than the craft paint does. For some reason I'm having trouble finding my giant bottle of White craft paint.

Above is the product I'm intending to use to transfer my heraldic designs to the figures. I had a hell of a time finding it in my local Michael's. It's in the craft paint aisle with all the other Crafstmart branded stuff.

For the other stuff on the table, like primed Genestealers from Uscarl or the finished cow Betsy, I'll give you a link to the post rather than post the same pictures from a few days ago.

My copy of Shadow War: Armageddon finally arrived, so watch for updates on that.

As always, thanks for looking and commenting.

Painting mojo returning

Hi All,

I'm not really one for incessant WIP posts, but I feel the mojo returning and wanted to share what progress I've had.

Betsy is pretty much done. You can't tell from the picture but her udders are the same color as her snout.

I've started the hair color on young Curt and the ladies. I'm trying a recipe from one of the Reaper learn to paint kits. The base for the brown hair is Mahogony Brown and the base for the Blonde is a mix of Palomino Gold and Oiled Leather. I thought it would be interesting to try as I never thought of doing hair this way. I still need to do various highlights and touch ups.

Lastly the 54mm size wooden knights I think I've gotten over the color scheme and how to get the heraldry transferred to them. Now I'm just trying to figure out what areas are what for painting. The Skull and Crown blog and shop thankfully have lots of painted examples.

Thanks for looking.

Paint Table Saturday 183 - A Smorgasbord of miniatures

Hi All,

Life seems super busy lately as we get down to the last few weeks of school and track season. I've tried to push forward with multiple projects to get ready for our excursion to Kublacon and gaming with Dai and Lasgunpacker afterwards.

Here's what we've got on the table.

Curt's Milkmaids. I've been throwing on colors here and there while I wait for glue to dry on other things. I have an overall plan for them so at least that's not the stumbling block. The flesh didn't go quite how I envisioned it and I'll have to do a lot of touching up anyway as I've gotten quite a lot of overage in some areas. These figures have a few nooks and crannies that are hard to get to. Betsy, the cow, is going to be a Holstein. To me this is the iconic dairy cow. I'm realizing just now that I'm going to have to fix the pattern on her face. From the pictures I've pulled up they all seem to have black markings around the eyes and I've left one side of her face white. I'm also going to be slightly artistic and use a little flesh color on her udders and snout. Oh and Dave B's gretchin are still there. I'm having a little bit of a block on how I want to proceed with them but I'm probably going with a riff on the Goffs color scheme.

This weeks big project has been cleaning and assembling these Genestealers for my Shadow War: Armageddon kill team. They are mostly Uscarl Miniatures with the two behind and to the left of the Magus being a special Bob Olley commission and the Hybork from Space Raiders, which I think was sculpted by Diego Serrate. The humanish stealers are Bob Olley sculpts and the Hybork is Kev Adams. I have some  Hybrid Gretchin from the same pack as the Hybork, but may not bother to paint them right now. I'm not sure if the Magus is really usable in game terms, but I figured he'd be fun to paint. I used a generator from Fantasy Name Generators to come up with the cult name, Children of the Comet. I'll try to come up with a background post.

Lastly, I finally got some paint on the wooden knights from Skull and Crown. I'mm going to get some graphite paper to help me trace heraldry onto them. My freehand is not good enough to do the Chicken and Squirrel designs. I need way more practice.

Well, I need to run. I think we're trying to fit in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 before the neighbor kids birthday party. I also need to paint all this stuff and prep for Sunday's WFRP session.

Paint Table Saturday 181 - Pretty little maids

Hi All,

Still all over the place, but I'll show you the most recent thing.

Taken with the new phone on "pro" settings. I played with the aperture and ISO to get better exposure on the figures. In auto it was compensating for the pure white elements in the shot and darkening things down too much. You can see the white bottles in the back are blowing out.

***EDIT*** These figures are from the Eureka (100WFR905) Milkmaid Set. I can only ever find it by typing it in the search bar. ***/EDIT***

I used Reaper Rosy Skin and Rosy Shadow on these with a little drying retarder mixed in. The hope was to wet blend. My paint still dried pretty rapidly and I couldn't blend. I may have put the paint on too thin or not enough retarder.

I sanded the wooden knights and glued them to their bases.

We have another WFRP session tomorrow and I just found out I have another Rally Round the King battle to fight out for the Talomir Tales blog.

I also went ahead and preordered Shadow War:Armageddon. I didn't think it was fair to let Dai have to carry the load of knowing all the rules for our game.

Well, I had better get on it.

Later.

Paint Table Saturday 156 - Beastman?

Hi All,

Very little going on on the hobby front. I've been trying to clean house and tidy up all my games and hobby stuff. I'm not doing very well.

Here's something I slapped a little paint on during the week.

Sorry for the unedited cellphone pic, my lens may need another cleaning. Anyway, I'm just playing with color and sort of fumbling around with how I want him to look. I need to mix up some ink washes with those inks I bought a few months back.

You can also see where I had some spray primer issues on his leg. Every once in awhile I have a problem with this gritty texture coming from the spray can. I read somewhere this week that it could be from being too far from the model and paint droplets drying in mid air. this gives a granular texture to the model and is kind of unappealing.

I've done this now with expensive acrylic spray and cheap home depot primer. I'm not sure if I'll leave it or try to buff it/sand it off. It doesn't want to come off with a stiff tooth brush now that I've put a coat of paint on it. I don't like the idea of stripping the whole thing. I'll let you know what I eventually do.

Hopefully the chores will get finished and the mojo will return.

Happy hobbying everyone.

Paint Table Saturday 150 - Odds and Sods

Hi All,

Sorry for the infrequent posting. I'm beavering away but don't have much in the way of progress.

So I've primed the Halflings and "Beastmen" (in the background right) and have started slopping on base color. The Chukk (Space Chickens) are for Dustin's Rogue Trader scenario, but i need to stat them out. I'm beginning to suspect that there will not be enough hours in the day to play all the games I desire. Chukk from Alternative Armies, Halflings: Effin Cool, Beastmen: Eureka.

In keeping with the "theme" for Oldhammer Weekends open battles, I acquired some chests etc from Castle Kits. These are nice little Hirst molds objects. Barrels sacks and the like. I intend to put some together into stowage for some scratch built carts for the Muffin caravan that is trying to get to Marienburg. Just an FYI, pay attention to the materials your stuff is made out of. These are plaster, which I discovered after tossing one of the packs into a tub of soapy water. I don't think I ruined them, but I got very worried that I scrubbed off some of the detail.

The merchant Lotho McStuffins, Burgher of the Moot and former Mayor of Sauerapfel. We'll see if I can get all this done.

I was also kindly reminded that I sort of agreed to paint a minion for The Bazaar of Crooked Wonders on Facebook. I found I have more Goblin Fanatics so I'll try that.

I'm also hoping to get these Beastmen and maybe even Chaos Centaurs painted for Herohammer and include them as allies in my Oldhammer Weekend. Some say I'm being meta, but I say I'm giving myself a reason to paint this stuff and have some fun trying different things with my army. Nobody wants to play the exact same army over and over again. Well maybe some do, but I like adding new fun things from time to time.

Welcome to Andrew Dyer, I know him from Oldhammer and as the primary organizer of this year's event. A very talented painter, he has been dragged kicking and screaming into the bloggisphere by the demise of Warseer. His blog is Acceptable Radiation. Join myself and Asslessman in being cool kids and follow his blog. I also think you should follow Anthony B's blog, The Lead Collector, he has far too few followers.

Well, as you can see, I've got my work cut out for me. See you soon.

Paint Table Saturday 149 - Getting Stuff Done

Hi All,

Busy week last week and a ton of stuff to share.

First, if you're going to Oldhammer weekend you need to get some figures together for this:

Forgive the Google Translate French, but it's better than I could do.

Next up, what's on the table for this week:

The mix of Circle of Chaos and Eureka "Beastmen" for my Herohammer Tzeentch Army.

My Dragon Bait Halfling Barbarian. Hopefully he will be appearing in some of the open gaming during Oldhammer Weekend. Oh and those are Shogun Miniatures magnetic bases on the right and under the Barbarian. He threw in a couple with that order of plates and movement trays. I'll be ordering some more.

A size comparison of some recent purchases of Halflings. Left to right: Dark Heaven Legends (Reaper) Halfling farmers, Dragon Bait Halfling Barbarian, Effin Cool Halfling Billman, Pathfinder (Reaper) "Halfling" Illusionist.

(Hmm that last picture looks like I need to clean my lens. As a side note I've begun appreciating the camera on my cellphone a little more since I actually cleaned it. Made a big difference.)

It also looks like my current impulse buys on ebay and the like are coming to an end. Although I did get a part time job at my son's school, my truck ended up needing $1500 worth of repairs.

Not pictured is all the stuff I need to paint for Blood Bowl and Epic looks like it's not going to happen.

Crunch time!

I'll try to post more frequently to keep myself on task.

Oh yeah and new round of t-shirts. Crap. I need to get on it.

Abdul Goldberg, the most infamous Rogue Trader.

He's done!

As usual a few good things and a few bad things but I'm very pleased with getting him done.

The majority of the figure is Eureka's Voltaire figure. I'm more of a Rousseau guy, but I don't think anyone makes a figure for him. The weapons and servo skull are from the Cadian trooper boxed set, as well as the respirator mask. The backpack and extra tube for the respirator are from Dragon Forge.

In addition to being happy with how he turned out I am really happy at how the photos turned out. I used all of my gear and knowledge from the photography course I took and processed the images in Lightroom. I'm really proud of them.

Here is the back story and stats for him that I'm posting in the Album in The Emporium of Rogue Dreams. Be sure to check out the others and see whose Rick Priestly picks as the ultimate Rogue Trader.

Abdul Goldberg! The name conjures up fear and loathing. No one knows the true origin of this Rogue Trader, he has been seen in many systems, never with the same crew. There are many stories about Abdul, this is one.

Before arriving at the fringe of the Empire, Abdul was a very zealous inquisitor. He enforced the Emperor's will with a vengeance but carried a dark secret, he was a psyker. At first he was able to hide his budding power. His power was revealed as he unleashed powerful wind blasts against the heretics who had killed his beloved acolyte, Brother Yorick. Abdul now travels with his loyal companion forever at his side as a servo skull.

Although Abdul is equipped with a full compliment of weapons, he is most often seen with his trusty bolt pistol “Fatima” and his Chain Sword “Te Absolvo”.

In game Abdul has the following stats and equipment:

Paint Table Saturday - 134: Orcs and Abdul

Hi All,

Finally had a moment to take and edit a couple of pictures of what I'm working on. And on a Saturday no less!?

Five of the Boar Boyz that Don sent me. The other five have had some paint applied but I'm trying to figure out the sweet spot for keeping the ball rolling on them. I've seemed to have a hard time getting myself to sit at the paint table lately.

You'll see that my entry into the Abdul Goldberg contest on the Emporium of Rogue Dreams is coming along. I have until the end of the month to finish him. I'm fired up because they have just revealed that Rick Priestly will be the judge. I'm as giddy as a schoolgirl.

My Abdul is mostly Eureka's Voltaire with a few bits from the Cadian box added and a back pack and respirator cable/tube from Dragon Forge. Be sure to check out the other entries in the Album.

Hopefully I can get more done on this guy today.

The Emporium, Bazaar and Burneye Sandork.

Hi All,

Been busy with Track, Taxes and home improvement projects. I also fried my router and made the mistake of ordering a new one through Linksys. I think I could have gone down to Best Buy and got one for a comparable price and I'd have it already. I did buy a little dongle so that I can plug my ethernet cable into my Surface tablet, but the lack of wifi is killing the family.

Ok, you came for the minis.

Sorry for the turned photo. My cellphone sometimes does this when I'm taking landscape shots. These are the candidates for Burneye Sandork, arch nemesis of Dahn Alt Rump. The early favorite is the one on the top (Left if it was horizontal). They are Goff Weirdboy, Boss in Power Armor with Bionik Eye, Bad Moon Boss and Death Skulls Boss. I got all these from fellow Oldhammerer Brian K. and found out who they were, and what that little piece was from the 1991 Catalog on solegends.com. I also have the Ork Freebooter with Robot body somewhere but I have misplaced him.

This is the Eureka Voltaire figure that I am going to use for my Abdul Goldberg character submission to The Emporium of Rogue Dreams facebook group. If you don't know, Abdul is an intergalatcic space pirate that is mentioned no less than three times in the plot generator in the back of the Rogue Trader rule book. I have until the end of May for this one.

This sorcerer is due at the end of this month for the Otherworld figure competition on The Bazaar of Crooked Wonders facebook group. So I'm going to need to push him through. I have the whole Idol diorama kit with this but I have a big plan for using led's that requires several steps that I have no experience with. So I keep putting that off.

I also keep forgetting to acknowledge two new followers. Evgeniy Brikelev and chikenbane (I think). Niether of you have a blog listed in your Friend connect file. If you have a hobby related blog I will post a link to it. Also, if you don't have some kind of profile picture you get appended to the beginning of the list. This makes it harder for me to figure out when you join.

Gotta run. Happy Hobby Time Y'all.
