Hello Spy Vibers! I hope everyone is well and staying safe. The Spy Vibe book has been progressing along nicely. I've been devoting this week to a few films that drew heavily on the international Fine Art scene. It's been super fun to research some of the major exhibitions that were happening in New York, London, and Paris in the early 1960s, and to see how new visual ideas then made their way into cinema. I even made new discoveries concerning some on-screen art that I was always curious about. More details to come! In the meantime, I think we could use some Vasarely magic about now. Born on April 9, 1906, this Hungarian-French artist was considered the godfather of Op Art. With works like Chess Board (1935) and Zebra (1937), he began to distill forms into geometric patterns and build the language of Op that would become more prominent in the 1950s and 1960s. Vasarely died in 1996 at the age of ninety. Check out the official website to see images from his long career. You can also learn about him on the Op Art website. The graphics in the image below, with its hypnotic patterns, prominent ring, and sunglasses could be a scene from The 1,000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse.

Snap Galleries launched a new exhibit around Mod musician Paul Weller (The Jam, The Style Council) on May 25th. From the press release: "We will be covering the whole shooting match: The Jam, Style Council, the solo years. I’m very excited about this one – we have assembled a collection of incredible work. It’s going to be a celebration—scratch that—a Wellerbration. The exhibition was due to end on 29 June 2019, but in response to a deluge of requests from Paul Weller fans from all around the world who are going to be in the UK for his Summer concerts, we are going to run it until 13 July 2019." New release: International Times founder/Indica Gallery/Bookshop owner Barry Miles and London gallery owner James Birch have created an exciting new book called British Underground Press of the Sixties. Essentially a catalog for the 2017 exhibit at A22 Gallery, the book celebrates the legacy of the UK counter-culture movement and features cover art from every issue of Britain's underground press in the 60s, along with comics and other material. The images are fascinating, revealing, and as co-curator James Birch described them, "visually explosive." I enjoy seeing elements of the various popular styles of the time such as Op Art, Art Nouveau, and psychedelia. If Spy Vibers ever wondered how the culture evolved during the decade and how the ideas of the youth movement were transmitted, you will do well to study the underground press and the efforts of people like Miles, Joe Boyd, and John "Hoppy" Hopkins. And you might already well have a foot in that territory if curiosity has led you The Beatles and Pink Floyd.
