SCI-FI DAY
Happy New Year, Spy Vibers! My radar picked up word that Jan 2 is now celebrated as Sci-Fi day! There have been a number of "golden" eras of science fiction, but I do think something that made the 1960s Spy Vibe special was the creative way Sci-Fi sensibilities came to be entwined with thriller conventions and redefined our secret agent heroes in a futuristic (and fun!) new context. With the Space Race propelling new heights of excitement, patriotism, innovation, aesthetics, and even anxiety, the Sci-Fi genre really blossomed during the decade and became a central place to explore society, race and gender, and our deepest principles. Here are just some of the reasons to celebrate Sci-Fi day with a Sixties twist. Enjoy!

STAR WARPS
Greetings Spy Vibers! The lair has been a bit quieter than usual this month, as I continue to recover from a back injury. A second wave of physical therapy and acupuncture seems to be doing the trick and I can't wait to get back to my routine of daily exercise and Spy Vibe posts. I guess December has been a bit like Shrublands health clinic (Thunderball, Never Say Never Again), but without the Bollinger, Caviar, Foie gras, and private massages. Still, chin up! The largest blip on my radar has been the new Star Wars movie. I was a kid when the original trilogy came out, so I'm really enjoying the return (mostly) to the universe I fell in love with as a boy. No spoilers here, but I will say I was pleasantly surprised how well the young actors carried the film with passion (I would have liked to have seen more energy from the old timers). That said, the movie was completely enjoyable and got us SW fans back on track. My attention has been on 1970s/1980s space opera, so space fashion and costume design have naturally drifted back into my imagination- hence the reference to warps and wefts in the title. I can't promise Bothan Spies, but we can have a fun week looking at adventure and intrigue out among the stars. Today we spotlight some vintage costume tests, fashion & promo images. Enjoy!

IKARIE XB1
Spy Vibers who enjoyed dancing in the Raumpatrouille Orion lounge yesterday should also check out Ikarie XB1. Produced in Czechoslovakia in 1963, this cult classic was adapted from The Magellanic Cloud by Stanislav Lem (Solaris) about the space-faring adventures of a colony ship. The film's production design, based on geometric white patterns over deep blacks, was a direct influence on the later Raumpatrouille. The film even included a lounge scene with "futuristic" dance moves. And like Lem's Solaris, the film shares aesthetics and pacing with 2001 A Space Odyssey. Ikarie XB1 was released for the English-speaking market as Voyage to the End of the Universe in a slightly re-cut form. PAL DVD available on Amazon here.
