Contest: Win a signed copy of The Man With the Golden Typewriter: Ian Fleming's James Bond Letters! One of the highlights of the summer was spending time with writer Fergus Fleming (Ian Fleming's nephew) and hearing about his upcoming anthology of his uncle's James Bond-related letters. The Man With the Golden Typewriter will contain numerous unpublished letters by Ian Fleming, which have been sourced from the Fleming Archive, the Cape Archive and private collections from around the world. I've been waiting eagerly for his book for many years and am so excited to see Fergus completing the task and keeping the project within the family. Bloomsbury has just released the book and I have three signed copies to give away to readers! That's right, you can win a copy of The Man With the Golden Typewriter: Ian Fleming's James Bond Letters signed by Fergus Fleming. Directions: All you have to do is email me at spyvibe[at]gmail.com with 1) "Letters" in the subject heading, 2) your mailing address, and 3) your favorite Ian Fleming quote. "On 16 August 1952, Ian Fleming wrote to his wife, Ann, 'My love, This is only a tiny letter to try out my new typewriter and to see if it will write golden words since it is made of gold'. He had bought the gold-plated typewriter as a present to himself for finishing his first novel, Casino Royale. It marked in glamorous style the arrival of James Bond, agent 007, and the start of a career that saw Fleming become one of the world's most celebrated thriller writers. And he did write golden words. Before his death in 1964 he produced fourteen bestselling Bond books, two works of non-fiction and the famous children's story Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang. Fleming's output was matched by an equally energetic flow of letters. He wrote constantly, to his wife, publisher, editors, fans, friends and critics, charting 007's progress with correspondence that ranged from badgering Jonathan Cape about his quota of free copies - a coin was tossed; Fleming lost - to apologising for having mistaken a certain brand of perfume and for equipping Bond with the wrong kind of gun. His letters also reflect his friendships with contemporaries such as Raymond Chandler, Noël Coward and Somerset Maugham. Before the world-famous films came the world-famous novels. This books tells the story of the man who wrote them and how he created spy fiction's most compelling hero." Order from AmazonUK and Amazon. Our series For Your Shelf Only has given us a chance to hear from a number of collectors about their prized treasures and their history with Ian Fleming and 007. We've talked with Bond continuation author Raymond Benson, spy novelist Jeremy Duns, and many others. I always enjoy connecting with our guests over our mutual love of spy adventure, and today I had the rare opportunity to sit in the interview seat myself! Artistic License Renewed, a wonderful website that focusses on Ian Fleming, Richard Chopping, and the Bond novels, invited me in for a virtual chat about my collection. Here's a sneak preview of my answers: "The editions I tend to collect more actively now are books
about Fleming or Fleming’s non-Bond work. Some gems include early (sometimes
first) work serialized in magazines, early collection catalogs, The London
Magazine in the 1950s, Horizon in the 1940s, contributions to Room 3603,
Counterpoint, Motor Car, To Catch a Spy, and Jonathan Cape Publisher. Books
about Fleming, like Ivar Bryce,
the memorial address, Letters of
Ann Fleming, and reference books like SMERSH. I was able to add a
couple of rare Fleming appearances to Jon Gilbert’s
Bibliography." When did I start reading Fleming and what's my favorite Bond story? Read the full interview here. Ian Fleming Productions made an exciting announcement today that the Young Bond novel series is back in production. New stories will be penned by Steve Cole, who wrote the Astrosaurs series and the Tripwire YA spy novels. The new Bond adventures will pick up where the Higson's titles left off. In an interview for the press release, Cole mentioned my favorite 007 read, From a View to a Kill: "I first encountered Bond in print as a
teenager, when I read From a View to a Kill. Fleming´s writing was so
vivid and authentic, Bond and the world he inhabited seemed suddenly real to me
– and the danger and glamour led me through book after book. It´s both
a thrilling privilege and an exciting challenge now to be shaping a new era in
the life of such an iconic character – with many firsts and surprises to
come as James´s life in the dangerous 1930s develops.’ Cole’s first Young
Bond novel will launch with a bang in Autumn 2014. It will be published in
hardback on RHCP’s highly respected Jonathan Cape children’s imprint." More at Ian Fleming Productions here. Young Bond series here.
