Prime Meridian
Ci si potrebbe chiedere se sono di più i dischi pubblicati da Frank Zappa o gli omaggi dedicati al Maestro. Come spesso accade la risposta è contenuta nella domanda. L'opera di Zappa si è conclusa, pubblicazioni postume a parte, con Yellow Shark mentre i tributi continueranno finché esisterà la Musica (altra tematica zappiana). Forte del proprio virtuosismo il Meridian Arts Ensemble non esita a misurarsi con classici come Oh No e Peaches en Regalia. Roba da far tremare i polsi. Ma in Prime Meridian non manca un corposo omaggio a Captain Beefheart e composizioni di altri autori tratti dallo sterminato repertorio di questo straordinario brass quintet: Kenny Wheeler, Herbie Hancock e altri, tra cui Jon Nelson, che del gruppo è membro. Una vera finezza, poi, affidare l'incipit a Stravinsky, che fu di Zappa una delle numerose influenze. Eat that question!

A Passionate Journey
I B Shops for the Poor nascono nel 1983 come duo dedito all'improvvisazione per iniziativa di David Petts e Jon Dobie. Con una formazione allargata esordiscono solo nel 1989 per i tipi della No Wave che da allora in poi pubblicherà tutte le loro realizzazioni. Le coordinate del gruppo sono chiarite al meglio nel secondo album, Visions & Blueprints, grazie anche alla presenza del maestro Peter Brotzmann: improvvisazione radicale e dissezione della forma canzone, citazioni colte e foschissime atmosfere di matrice Rock in Opposition. I frequenti riferimenti a Brecht (ma anche a Queneau e ai surrealisti) li apparentano agli Art Bears e ad alcune prove soliste di Dagmar Krause, così come una sobria eleganza sul palco unita alla passione per gli strumenti vintage (theremin e sintetizzatori, più marcata nei successivi Remote Viewers) e le avanguardie storiche può ricordare gli Stereolab. Meno sporchi dei Blurt, per fare un nome emblematico, i B Shops sono anche un po' eredi di quel free jazz punk inglese che anni or sono raccoglieva l'autorevole disapprovazione di un italico maestro di pensiero con la data di scadenza. Nel 1998 il gruppo rinasce, come accennato, nella forma dei Remote Viewers e inizia una lunga collaborazione con la prestigiosa Leo Lab di Leo Feigin. Il loro ultimo disco, City of Nets, risale giusto allo scorso anno, questa volta per un'etichetta altrettanto importante come la ReR Megacorp di Chris Cutler. Se siete alla ricerca di un centro di gravità permanente La Buona Annata è il luogo che fa per voi.

Tops of Trees
Carol Emanuel è un'arpista di formazione classica (ha studiato tra gli altri con Gunther Schuller) che nella sua carriera ha toccato i più disparati generi musicali. Fedele collaboratrice da più di vent'anni di John Zorn, con il quale ha inciso album memorabili come Spillane, Godard e Filmworks, passa con disinvoltura dalla musica classica (Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra) al jazz (Anthony Braxton), dall'avanguardia (Arto Lindasday, Seigen Ono, Bobby Previte) al pop di classe (Neil Sedaka, Bjork, Cindy Lauper, gli Oingo Boingo del prolifico autore di colonne sonore Danny Elfman). A fronte di queste numerose ed eclettiche collaborazioni la Emanuel ha pubblicato solo due dischi a proprio nome: questo Tops of Trees e, nel 2010, Allow to Happen, che si avvale di musicicsti come Tony Levine, Jerry Marotta, Marc Ribot e Greg Cohen.
Tops of Trees, pubblicato in contemporanea nel 1995 dall'americana Koch Jazz e dalla giapponese EVVA, contiene dieci composizioni scritte appositamente da autori come Evan Lurie, Guy Klucevsek, Wayne Horvitz e naturalmente John Zorn.
