ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam (HG scale)

Well, this has been a while...

To long actually.  So in the middle of past march, I finally cracked open a Gunpla set, almost 4 years after I build my last one.

And of course, what else was there to build then Freedom, for me still the most gorgeous suit ever made in the franchise.  At first, I build the set from the box, only needing some glue to keep one of the beamsabers in check, and to better attach the blue / darkblue finpoint connections.

After getting a base to place the model, I posed it accordingly to how I envision Freedom usually, with the wings open but the shoulder and hip cannons retracted, shield up and it's beam rifle firing away at the enemy.

And then I started the painting on the model, for which I went for my "traditional" manner of three tones with bold highlights for contrast.  Because face it, the straight out of the box, while colorrepresentative for these kits, is still a bit bland after all....

But before the actual painting started, I first had to select a pose, put him on the base, and start glueing some joints and things like the wings firmer into position, so that he doesn`t fall apart once the paintjob is done.

Paint wise, I decided to go for my trusted "3 layer colour" style.  I started with doing all the parts that will become white at the end with a layer of Vallejo Cold Grey.

Next up, Vallejo Imperial Blue was used as the basecoat for the blue parts on the model.

While Black was then added to the dark parts for the chest, wings and shield center.

The next base layers where the Dark Rubber and blue greys for the gun barrels and joints of the model, together with Coat D'Arms Brown red and Sand Brown to complete the first layer to start working on.

That was started with Sky Grey by Vallejo in all the cold grey areas.  This already "livened up" the model seriously.

The next session saw the black and blue areas coloured up, with respectively Vallejo Black Grey and Intense Blue.

A few sessions later, the complete second, or "main colour" layer was added.  The last colours added for this layer being Sun Yellow and German Fieldgrey both by Vallejo.

So time for highlighting colours now!  The first part is the biggest, as all the white was put on, done at places in two layers.

With that completed, the next areas to be highlighted where all the blue and black sections, respectively done with Vallejo Game Color Magic Blue and Armypainter Necromancer Cloak.

With that, the large areas of the model where done, and I could move to smaller sections and colours.  This was first done on the smaller grey areas, with Cold Grey by Vallejo for the weapons and joints, and Fog Grey from Army Painter for the railguns on the hips and the collar.

And that meant a final session would do all the reds and the bit of yellow, respectively with British Scarlet by Coat D'Arms and Moon Yellow by Vallejo.

After a coat of Matte Varnish from AK Interactive, the Freedom model itself is ready, so next it is to make a base for it to improve the stability with the spread open wings.

Once that was done on an official MechaTop base, the whole base was sanded next, and a layer of Warm Grey again from the Amsterdam art acrylics painted over it, before adding a drybrush of the Olive Green.

I then proceeded with adding some things to the base, like rocks, tufts of flowers, and the likes to round it out nice and smoothly.

So this was a fun build for sure.  For those looking for the paints, MOST of them can be found on this website, which also has nice discounted prices so that's double whammy!

My first order at AmiAmi

AmiAmi, the site to be, or at least one of the sites to be, for those into collecting anime figurines.

And finally I bit the bullet and made a small order over there, to try and see how much it would all cost me.

I know shipping isn't cheap as it has to come from Japan, and import fees could be charged for clearing it in, but with the yen at time of writing about 8 euro for 1000 yen, it was a good time to order something small.

To that end, I picked the Tamashii Web Exclusive Wild Tiger TopMag version from Tiger & Bunny for this first order, from their "pre-owned" section.  These are generally used models, but they come with a rating on site for both the item AND the box condition, and for this model that was listed respectively as A for the item and B for the box.  The model itself, at 1880 yen, was as such 14.45 EUR.  And 19 points to my taly, the points count as 1 yen each, and can be used in future purchases as currency, remaining valid one year after your last purchase.

The order was placed the 5th of april, and even without this little bug around, it was about to take a while as well, it has to come from the other side of the globe.  Everything faster then the average 4-6 weeks from most sites was fine with me, and the 13th of april the parcel arrived.  Luckily, Belgium is still one of those countries that can use the EMS shipping service, often cheaper and faster then other options.
HOWEVER... shipping will be calculated after check out, so better sniffle around the internet for an idea on what rate it will be up and about, payment went through Paypal, nice and easy.  On the plus side, you can have all preorders made in one calendar month be shipped together to save on the cost, something I`ll definitly be doing in the future.  For this order, it was 2400 yen or 18.5 euro.

Yeah, I know, it means the same risks and costs as the Brexit I tend to complain about, except there are trade agreements between the EU and Japan (and the States for that matter) that have been smoothened out over the decades they are in place, meaning you look at a maximum of 40% if you are really unlucky, compared to even that one guy in my gaming group that payed a surplus of 109% of the value on a mail order of figures from the UK.  But this particular parcel slipped by customs, yay!

So, about the order itself...

Arriving in a nice sturdy box, I couldn`t wait to cut it open (carefully) to see what was inside, or better how it was inside.

So there we have it, a brand new figure which was so-called second hand...

Now to check back everyday in the (vain apparently according to a lot of collectors) hope of seeing AND scoring a Zero Two figurine...

Unboxing Anime Heroes Sagittarius Aiolos

The second of the first wave of Anime Heroes models for the Saint Seiya franchise, Aiolos is the saint that saved baby Athena at the cost of his own life, and put in motion the events that unravel the betrayal at Sanctuary.

Older brother of the gold Leo saint Aiolia, he was destined to become the next Grand Pope of the Saints, chosen protector of the godess Athena.

The model comes packed in a transparent front box, sporting artwork on all sides, and the range at the back.

Inside, Aiolos is protected by a plastic insert, the wings going through the back to prevent them from getting bent when the boxes might get handled roughly.

He has two pair of hands, one set in fists, one with open fingers.  I opted to make the combination of him launching the Atomic Thunderbolt attack, his main combat move apart from his bow.

Which is my biggest grief perhaps with this model.  A bow accesory would have been a fantastic addition, even if it was one in "folded up" form, because the Sagittarius saint sans bow just doesn`t feel complete in my opinion.

One big benefit though for the gold saints, as they have "skirt" pieces in their armour, the joints are better covered then with the Seiya model I reviewed last month.

All in all it is not a bad action figure, but as I said, it's a shame there is no bow.

XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero

The newest addition for my MechaTop collection, this time it's the Wing Gundam Zero from the Gundam Wing series.

Like those before him, it is a repainted gasaphon (capsule toys in soft plastic) by BanDai.

The Wing Gundam Zero made it's appearance during the second part of the series, build by Quatre but in the end piloted by Heero, as a follow up to his Wing Gundam mobile suit.  Equipped with the ZERO system that links on a mental level with it's pilot, it was one of the only two suits (the other being Epyon) that used this highly advanced system.

The model as such has been repainted from it's monotone coloured plastic it came in, adding more detail and panelling as a result to make it stand out better and just, well, look far better.  In scale 1/400 it has the same size as a regular 28mm figure, and goes well to game with all the 1/300 scale terrain I`ve been building the past months.

I hope to soonish try out MechaTop in solo mode as a result, and this guy is high on the list to be the main hero suit for the game...

MS-07B Gouf

The latest addition to my Future War Commander "Open Market" aka Gundam force, the good old Gouf mass produced mobile suit.

While more close combat orientated then the ZAKU, to which it lost out to become the suit of choice for the Principality of Zeon, it is often a suit used by officers and aces.

The model itself is a 1/400 scale Gasaphon (capsule toy) made by BanDai in the same sort of soft plastic like the various Clix systems, and has been repainted from it's pre-paint (albeit correct) colour scheme and based to be used on the tabletop.

While 6mm is actually 1/300, these models look far better with the terrain often used for those games, and they can serve perfectly as well in the Mobile Suit Gundam skirmish game, something I`m looking into trying out solo one of these months.

Now to pick one of the many classes in the armylist to represent it with...

Dusting of the Gundam Project

Okay, the Tau are getting their new Codex...

There is the free downloadable Mobile Suit Gundam skirmish game rules on Facebook...

And I still have this guy... the first of a planned project from years ago (as in, with the second version of the Tau codex)...

Apart from him, I still have "a few" GunPla kits in my storage space... like about 24 of them, over which half are rank and file mobile suits like Geara Droga's and Zaku's in scale 1/144, which is when I want to introduce the Gundam game to the club, about equal to 15mm so I might be buying some scenery in that scale in the future.

So yes, perhaps it IS time to finally make work of the age old plan of building them all and use them as a Tau army.  Sure, the GunPla models are bigger then the regular Tau battlesuit (well, if they are on their flying bases, not so much actually) which is slightly gamewise a penalty.  Because of the (clusterf*cked) line of sight rules for 8th edition.  But that doesn't bother me one bit, as it won't be a competitive force in any way.

Instead, the goal is to create a force made for the occassional fun game and change of force from my Heretic Astartes.  See, I like two things in life, anime being one of them and the Tau with all their mecha suits are a force that always had a big appeal to me.

I do realise I'll need to create a printed out visual recognisition guide for my opponents, but that is a small effort and a single printed copy of about 7 - 9 different mecha pictured on it and what they represent should be sufficient after all.  The 'hardest' part is probably how to equip all the battlesuits to accomodate the GunPla models.

As it stands at the moment, the Tau have 4 "main" battlesuits on which variations are build.  The huge Riptide and Stormsurge, and the basic XV8 and Broadsides.  Apart from the ForgeWorld ones like the immense KX139, or the XV109 and the likes, as well as the XV9.
My idea was generally for the Broadsides to use 'ranged' Gundam models, like the above HeavyArms Kai, the Dynames, the Buster, etc.

The basic line troop suits, being the venerable XV8, would be represented by the most basic and noble of mobile suits, being both the GM and the Zaku models with a variety of weapons.

For the bigger suits, "legendary" Gundams will be drafted in, those main suits of series.  My Freedom for example, the most gorgeous Gundam ever made, will be a Riptide!
Should I decide to take stealth suits, I still have two boxes of "balls" who would suit that job excellently, and any flyer support can be represented with flyer packs like the Aile or the Raizer kits...

And for that Lord of War KV139, the Psycho Gundam will make an excellent alternative!

I won't be fielding any infantry, though drones are possible in the form of the "funnels" weapon systems that some of the Gundams have.  I know that for a logistic sense, a lot of the suits will have only a single weapon system as a result (one gun models) but will have more of their support options as a result like markerlights and things, but for that I'll need to study the upcoming codex first... in due time, because I will have a lot to paint.  Not in model numbers, but those 12 cm high mechas take more time then your average 28mm infantry figure after all.

Uchiage!
