Sarissa Precision Lantern

The Sarissa Precision Lantern and Ruler set contains parts to build four Japanese Lanterns and two nine inch rulers in the shape of a Katana.

These function as street lights in thermal world, and will provide cover in war-games.
The lanterns are fairly easy to build, but do take care with the bottom of the corners. There is a tendency for them to move out of alignment due to the narrowness of the connection at the top.

For ease of painting, the bases were not glued in place.
They were sprayed with Plasticote Rust effect, followed by Halfords Grey Primer. They were then brush painted with Army Painter Stone Golem (inside and out).
Once dry, the bases were glued on.
They were given a wash of Citadel Nuln Oil. The bases were washed with Citadel Agrax Earthshade.

Ronin Warband using Fireforge figures

So as an intermediate milestone while building two Japanese forces for Oathmark, I built what should be a viable force for Ronin (admittedly based on the Bushi Buntai Starter Army - I do not actually possess the rules yet)..

The force comprises:
  • Hatamoto Samurai with heavy armour and Katana.
  • 2 x Samurai with heavy armour and Katana.
  • 2 x Ashigaru with Naginita
  • 4 x Ashigaru with Yumi
The points might not quite add up, we shall see.

The four archers (awaiting quivers and katanas). I might add some slung helmets (the bow strings would be fouled by the helmets if worn).
Two Ashigaru with Naginitas.
The three samurai (they need to have the sword scabbards added)..
Ashigaru with the first scenery item - a Japanese Streetlight from Sarissa precision.
The pieces are quite delicate during assembly and this one needs a bit of tidying up.

Fireforge Samurai Warriors

Fireforge have recently released box sets of plastic Samurai and Ashigaru. The Samurai Warrior box builds 24 heavily armoured samurai warriors armed with swords, naginatas. spears with straight blades and pollards with cross blades. These boxes come with Round 25mm bases..

There is a Samurai Shooter box, but that does not map on to Oathmark or Lion Rampant very well.

There are four body sprues. They contain enough parts for six warriors, six torsos and seven sets of legs, the additional set of legs is a crouching one usable in the Shooter set.
There are various helmeted heads, but not quite enough to equip all six with generic helmets.
One thing to note, these figures do not have puddle bases.
There are four weapon sprues.

I think the arms on the figure above are a bit low. The scabbard needs to be added.

Three assembled figures.

Fireforge Ashigaru Shooters

The Ashigaru Shooter box builds 24 lightly armoured Ashigaru armed with either a  composite bow or a matchlock arquebus.. They also have a back up sword.

There are four body sprues (identical to the Warrior box) and four weapon sprues.

They will provide the ranged weapons for the Samurai.

Fireforge Ashigaru Warriors

Fireforge have recently released a range of Japanese Samurai and Ashigaru. At SELWG 2023 I picked up a box each of the Ashigaru Warriors, Ahsigaru Shooters and the Samurai Warrior.

The Ashigaru Warrior box builds 24 lightly armoured Ashigaru armed with either a naginata (basically a sword on a stick) or a nagae-yari (more like a pike). They also have a back up sword.

Each sprue has six torsos (so builds six figures) but is common to the Ashigaru Shooter box (qv) and includes two crouching sets of legs.
There are six heads wearing the traditional jingasa helmet and two bare headed.

The right arm is integral to the naginata and the left arm is numbered to match the right.

The plan is to build two mini armies with slightly different themes for Oathmark, which will also be usable in Lion Rampant.
