Citadel Fantasy Tribe Evil Leaders

(Updated 1st June 2026)

The Fantasy Tribe Evil Leaders range was released back in late 1982. It was changed to C22 before being amalgamated into ranges by race type. They were designed to expand upon earlier ranges in the Fantasy Tribe series. I blogged about this little known range back in 2022 but have now brought together more of my own collection whilst sorting. Lots of pics just lifted from the last post but loads more new ones. Bryan's ideas on populating wargame tables were fantastic. When you think most of the Fantasy Tribe releases had about 16 variants. RIP Bryan.

This is from the 1982 (Dragon front) catalogue. I'd forgotten how well read my old copies are.

White Dwarf Advert

Couple of White Dwarf review slots...

Onto the range itself;

Chaos Commander

This seems to be the original version although he was replaced by the one further below... I may have got confused as he is also down as the Orc champion which makes sense... I'll see if I have a spare so I can check the base) - help!

Edit - thanks again to Nilrem Cellezum who just sent base pictures (and a comparison to a later conversion) so this IS the Orc Champion, not the Chaos Commander which is pictured below - somebody help me find one please! I've left it here anyway rather than remove the text etc.

(below images c/o a great French collector known as Nilrem Cellezum)

I need this mini please! It's a variant of one of the old early boxed set figures but cast as a one piece.

Hobgoblin Chieftain

Skeleton Champion

Zombie Lord

Night Elf Lord

Orc Warlord

Was the FTO15 (Orc Bodyguard w. Mace of Thunder & Shield) also a contender?

Night Goblin Warlord

Night Goblin Chieftain

The blistered version is c/o Gazamonkee on eBay who gave permission to use the image. I must have seen the blistered version in my days at GW Manchester but my memory wears thin... like tears in the rain these days.

Red Goblin Chieftain

Lesser Goblin Chieftain

(not great pics, the old white undercoat I used to use doesn't like pics being taken)

Orc Champion

Nilrem Cellezum's base pics and comparison below;

Notice the addition of names - staff members from that time period!

Thanks again Nilrem!

Below is FTO14 Ogron Foulbreath, Orc champion who should have been a contender!

Well, that's it for now folks! If you have any spare pennies please jump onto The Little Soldier Company website and buy something... link is at the top and I do try to put good stuff on there!

Citadel C18 Undead Samurai

I got all of these (actually just realised I'm now missing one, see the bottom pics) when they were released at some point in the mid (or a little later?) 80's. Designed by Aly Morrison, they were simply a joy to paint although I stopped for some reason after 8 of them. The rest were, at least, based and undercoated with the occassional slap of paint... Fantastic sculpts. I've just joined the 'Fantasy Japan Gaming' group on Facebook which is a perfect home for them. At some point I'll dig out my old Clan War boxes and see if they are compatible.

On to the part painted...

This guy below was featured in a Citadel catalogue but I can't find the reference. I recall it being a colour one but maybe my memory is playing games.

It does look like I'm missing 'Li-Che' so if anyone has a spare please give me a shout. Image c/o Lost Minis.

Some of my other painted Samurai types... a very old Dixon's Miniatures one in the middle, I painted this in the late 70's I think. Trevor Dixon has one of the most wonderful oriental ranges and is still going strong. His son looks to be carrying on the tradition as well. The other two are more Aly Morrison sculpts released in the Citadel / GW Oriental Heroes range. There were quite a lot of initial sculpts as it was for the 1985 TSR AD&D Oriental Adventures book. Unfortunately GW lost / dropped the license and the minis had any reference to C TSR removed although you can occassionally make out a faint TSR on the back of some tabs.

Trevor's Samurai types on either end, this time sandwiching two of Aly's earlier sculpts for the Citadel / GW original Oriental Heroes range... a wonderful boxed set that was expanded beautifully before the AD&D / slotta change occured... the undercoated figure looks to be succumbing to lead rot unfortunately as it was of the era Citadel experimented with different alloys. Grrr etc.

Boxed set contents c/o Lost Minis WIKI.

So, until we meet again. Please leave a comment below!
