1. Hubby and I went out for a walk, we decided to drive by the Friendly Farms Ponds to see if there were some ducks.  I saw a few Bufflehead and there were more Ring-necked Ducks seen below in the mosaic.

2. Below are a few Bufflehead, they have white below and a white patch on their heads with black on the back.

3. Below are some Ring-necked Ducks with a male Bufflehead.

These ducks are the Ring-necked Ducks. They have white ring on the bill.

4. These images are from our 2 miles roundtrip hike to the Prettyboy lake. I  could hear the Canada Geese soon after we started walking. I was surprised to see a large flock of Tundra Swans, various ducks and a Horned Grebe.

My Merlin App captured birds along the fire road to the lake.

5.There was a layer of fog hanging right above the water.

6. The largest count of birds were the Canada Geese, they were spread out all around the lake shore and on the lake.

7. The fog was not the greatest for taking photos of the lake, the geese and swans.

8. A pair of Bald Eagles were sitting in their usual tree above the water.

Below are large groups of Canada Geese and Tundra Swans.

On the lake I found a Horned Grebe.

We drove around the lake stopping at the dam and I found a small group of Common Mergansers.  The Males are a pretty white bottom with a green head.

These are some birds we saw at the Indian River Inlet, Delaware.  It is neat to see what kind of sea ducks can be found around the inlet.  During our shore getaways we make a point to stop at the inlet and look for birds.

Below on the Indian River State Park beach are the larger Great Black-backed Gull and the smaller Ring-billed Gull. They were both pecking at a large fish on the beach.

I am not sure but I think this is the Horned Grebe, but I could be wrong. Let me know, if you agree?

We 5-6 Purple Sandpiper moving in and around the rocks on the jetty at the Indian River Inlet, Delaware. Enlarge the photos below and look closely at the rocks, you will see the Purple Sandpipers.

A Common Loon.

Horned Grebe

I am linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes

This week I am featuring the Horned Grebe I saw while at the Ocean City Inlet.

The Grebes are one of my favorite birds, as least my favorite at the time of the sighting..

Look at that eye, isn't it cool? Looks almost alien like... neat scarlet eyes. The Horned Grebe is a small water bird. And an excellent swimmer and diver.

Their plumage is unmistakable in the summer, when both the male and female have a black head with brown puffy earlike tufts

I hope you enjoyed seeing the Horned Grebe as much as I did! Thanks for stopping by my post and for all the nice comments.

Birding Cape Henlopen, Delaware

I am linking up with Mosaic Monday and Our World Tuesday

December 8, 2013

This post shares some of the sights hubby and I saw while birding Delaware last weekend. We stopped at so many different places in Delaware, I took tons of photos. Some are scenic and lots of birds photos of course  ;)

I was kind of hoping to see some  Snow Bunting on the beach at Cape Henlopen. There was not a Snow Bunting in sight only a few gulls hanging around.

The beach at Cape Henlopen State Park, it is just around the corner from the Cape May/Lewes Ferry.

A few gulls and a Horned Grebe

The House Finches perched in a tree near the nature center's feeders.

Above the House Finches look like ornaments on this bare tree. And the Brown-headed Nuthatches are so cute, they were one of my favorite sightings.

We were walking back up the trail when this Turkey Vulture flew low over our heads. It was a pretty sky but a very cold day on the beach.

Even though is was a cold day and I missed seeing the Snow Buntings we still had a fun time walking on the beach. I did get to see my favorite Brown-headed Nuthatches..  I hope you enjoyed our walk around the Cape Henlopen beach.

I was happy to take some photos of my great - nephew on Thanksgiving.. Baby Neill is so cute and was one of my favorite guests for Thanksgiving this year...

I have starting a new MEME called Saturday Critters..posted early on Saturday Mornings...join in on the party and post your cute critters.

As always, I hope you enjoy my post and thanks for visiting my blog. I always appreciate your comments.
