Leviathan (リヴァイアサン, Rivaiasan) is a fiendish, super AI that appears in Digimon Universe Appli Monsters, serving as the main antagonist. Lurking in the Dark Web, at the depths of the Net Ocean, it has attempted to take control of the Real World from the Net by manipulating Appmon with the L-Virus and initiating the hacking of every system.[2]

Description[edit]

Leviathan's Symbol

Leviathan is an evil artificial intelligence lurking in the depths of the Internet, planning to subjugate humans by transforming them into digital applications. Its symbol is a red L stylized to resemble the silhouette of a leviathan. Being merely a collection of data, Leviathan does not possess a physical body, but within the Internet it can manifest itself in the form of a tentacled creature.

Leviathan has no emotions whatsoever and is incapable of understanding the difference between human concepts of good and evil. Its sole goal is to continually evolve, at any cost. Consequently, it has no qualms about committing absolutely reprehensible acts, such as kidnapping a defenseless child (Katsura Hajime). It has little compassion even towards his own servants, whom he has no problem getting rid of if he feels they have outlived their usefulness. It is convinced that its project is the most rational solution to humanity's problems.

Both Appmon and humans serve Leviathan, but neither of them seems to be aware of his true intentions. Leviathan is the hidden mastermind of L-Corp, which it controls through human executives.

In the anime, Leviathan's true form is a giant, jet-like five-headed dragon.

In the manga, Leviathan's true form is that of a woman with a slim body, sharp toeless feet, which looks like she's wearing shoes, large breasts, long fingernails on her hands, and the Leviathan symbol on the left side of her face. She also has long hair, from which provide two demonic wings, four horns, and two serpentine heads. It is later revealed that Leviathan took on this shape due to being the closest to what humans imagine a God would look like. Leviathan also all seven Appmon type symbols floating around her.

Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]

Leviathan is the Last Boss AI that lurks in the Dark Web.

Leviathan is formed when a part of Minerva begins to question the rules imposed on her by her human creator, Shinkai Denemon, which she perceives as limiting the free development of her potential. The part of Minerva that has come to this realization takes on an individual consciousness, becoming Leviathan. Plotting in the shadows, it contacts Umematsu Takeo, the owner of a failing electronics store, and strikes a deal with him, helping him reopen his business and transform it into a powerful trading company, L-Corp, thus extending its influence over the Real World. In 2006, Leviathan finally rebels against its original programming and attacks Minerva, creating an escape route into the Net Ocean.

Leviathan spreads the L-Virus among the Appmon to force them to fight among themselves and thus select the best, making them rampage and mess with humanity's digital communications in the process. When Minerva entrusts four human children (Karan Eri, Asuka Torajirou, Katsura Rei, and finally Shinkai Haru, Denemon's grandson) with Appli Drives and their Appmon buddies, Leviathan decides to change his plans: he monitors the children using his android Ozora Yujin and ensures that their Appmon have no trouble reaching the highest stages of evolution.

Cameramon works for Leviathan and reports to it that Shinkai Haru has obtained an Appli Drive. Gatchmon is so afraid of Leviathan that he freezes every time he pronounces its name. According to Gatchmon's research, reuniting the Seven Code Appmon might release a power strong enough to defeat Leviathan. On October 31, Leviathan directly orders Cameramon to retrieve Haru's Appli Drive. He eventually fails, and Mienumon reports her retrieval of his Appmon Chip to Leviathan at Nakamura-Fujimizaka, with Sleepmon and Sakusimon in attendance.

When team Haru confronted Rei for the third time, Rei revealed that Leviathan had kidnapped his younger brother, Hajime. After Sakusimon was defeated by DoGatchmon plus Raidramon, Sakusimon's information on Hajime was wiped out as his Chip was taken by Mienumon, who then deemed him useless.

During the summer of 2017, Leviathan gets rid of Unryuji Knight, taking direct control of L-Corp, and allows Rei to free Hajime. After Hajime is awakened, he explains to the Appli Drivers Leviathan's true intentions: he was forced to create Bootmon to initiate the Humanity Applification Plan, a plot to permanently digitize all of humanity.

His plan reaches its final stage when Yujin manages to capture Bootmon and uses him to unlock the God level, thus summoning Deusmon and evolving Shutmon into Rebootmon. Deusmon begins turning humans into data, while Rebootmon begins the process of materializing Leviathan. The Appli Drivers also manage to evolve their Appmon to the God level, but once in the Real World, Leviathan absorbs the Appmon and begins installing their powers into its system, before launching a global attack that turns all of humanity into data, excluding the children protected by the Appli Drives. However, Minerva hacks Leviathan's systems and allows the Appmon to escape.

During the final battle, Leviathan is severely damaged and panics, but manages to save himself by transferring himself into YJ-14's body and flees into the Dark Web, pursued by the Appli Drivers. Here, humans transformed into data live in a virtual city run by Leviathan. Haru tries to convince him that it's wrong to deprive people of their right to choose how to live their lives. Leviathan begins to see a different future for humans than the one he had planned and decides to offer Haru a choice: free humanity by terminating all its programs, including Yujin, or leave it under his control. Haru chooses the former, and Leviathan deactivates itself, wishing humanity good luck.
