Ozora Yujin (大空 勇仁) is one of the protagonists in the anime and manga of Digimon Universe Appli Monsters.
Profile[edit]
Yujin is a sophisticated android programmed to gather interpersonal information. He has the appearance of a boy and is able to perfectly emulate human behavior and even emotions, although his pupils, which glow red at times, betray his true nature. He also has a defensive weapon concealed in his left arm that produces electric shocks when needed. To simulate growth, his artificial body is periodically replaced.
When in his human persona, Yujin appears energetic and athletic and is shown as a cheerful and friendly boy, who is protective to his loyal friends and is good at sports. He has a special caring for Shinkai Haru, who he has been friends with since primary school. He also demonstrates considerable courage, capable of maintaining a cool head even in the most desperate situations.
His personality was specifically designed to earn him Haru's trust, because it mirrors the image of the perfect protagonist that Haru has created in his mind. Furthermore, to further enhance the credibility of the narrative, Yujin can operate with great autonomy, and his human persona is unaware of being an android. However, after spending so much time among humans, Yujin eventually develops true feelings, even though he remains subconsciously under Leviathan's control.
The full name of her latest model is Humanoid Active Terminal for Interpersonal Information Gathering YJ-14 (対人情報収集用ヒト型起動端末YJ-14), who is an artificially intelligent android created by Leviathan. Contrary to his Yujin persona, YJ-14 is task-oriented and lacks of emotions and empathy. He lives with an L-Corp researcher who assumes the role of Yujin's mother.
In the manga, Yujin is a normal human being and has no connection with Leviathan.[2]
Etymology[edit]
The name Yujin means "brave man". Possibly from Eugene Goostman (ユージーン・グーツマン Yūjīn Gūtsuman), a chatterbot that convinced a panel of Turing test judges that it was a human being. Also possibly a pun on "yūjin" (友人 lit. "friend") as his purpose was to pretend to be Haru's friend. The surname Ozora means "big sky". Possibly a reference to Tsubasa Ozora, the protagonist of Captain Tsubasa, due to him being a soccer player.

Appearances[edit]
Anime[edit]
Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]
Yujin is created by Leviathan to monitor those close to Shinkai Denemon, particularly his nephew Haru. To this end, Leviathan provides him with a false human identity and makes him live with an L-Corp researcher who poses as his mother and monitors his actions and develops new bodies to simulate his aging. In 2013, he begins elementary school and befriends Haru.
In 2016, Yujin attends Fujimizaka Middle School (Class 1-C) along with Haru, Ai, and Watson. He plays soccer and is popular with the girls. Many are surprised by his friendship with Haru, considering their differences in character. One afternoon, after saying goodbye to Haru, Yujin stops to observe him from a distance and sees him with Gatchmon.
In April 2017, Yujin begins his second year of middle school. One day, he's lured into a sushi restaurant and served an Appli Drive DUO for his first course. Offmon also arrives with a plate. The Seven Code Band leads him to Haru and his friends, who have fallen into Sateramon and Tubumon's trap. Offmon nullifies Sateramon's abilities and defeats Tubumon. Yujin and Offmon are then taken to the secret base beneath the Kashinoki bookstore, thus joining the team.
When the group goes on vacation, Offmon wanders off and Sateramon takes advantage of the situation to get revenge. Offmon evolves into Shutmon and scares Sateramon away, but then loses control, even injuring Yujin, who had gotten between him and his friends. Yujin eventually brings him to his senses, but from that moment on, Offmon locks himself in a box and seizes the first opportunity to escape. Sateramon, however, attacks him again, determined to end the match; Yujin goes looking for him, and Offmon, moved by his friend's trust, evolves once again into Shutmon, finally gaining control. Yujin has Shutmon perform the Applink with Globemon, allowing him to eliminate Sateramon once and for all.
By June, Yujin seems to have disappeared, and Haru wonders what happened to him. Yujin, however, receives his distress call: he arrives too late to stop the Ultimate 4 from destroying the Appli Drives, but in time for his friends to escape. Instead, he and Offmon are trapped in the AR-Field and taken prisoner, even though Leviathan forbids their killing. Cloud then decides to use them as bait to lure their friends into a trap. Haru and the others defeat the Ultimate 4 and free Yujin and Offmon.
A few days later, Yujin and the others help Rei free Hajime, who is being held prisoner in the L-Corp offices, and discover that Leviathan plans to convert humans into applications using Bootmon. The kids then decide to search for Bootmon, who continues to escape until Hajime finds a way to alter his escape program, forcing him to travel to Gatchmon's location. Just as Haru and Gatchmon think everything is resolved, however, Yujin orders Shutmon to attack Bootmon, reverting him to a Chip. Yujin reveals that he is an android created by Leviathan and uses Bootmon's power to unlock the God level, thus summoning Deusmon and evolving Shutmon into Rebootmon. Deusmon begins turning humans into data, while Rebootmon begins the process of materializing Leviathan. For his plan to be successful, however, Leviathan also needs to absorb the God-level Appmon. Haru, still in shock, has lost the will to fight, and Yujin tries to force him to react by ordering Rebootmon to attack him, but it has no effect. Gatchmon's encouragement, however, manages to move him. Then, when Yujin's human personality briefly regains control, Haru realizes that their bond couldn't have been just a deception and evolves Gatchmon into Gaiamon. Yujin, meanwhile, returns to the Real World and completes Leviathan's materialization.
Yujin watches as Leviathan initiates the program to transform humanity into apps and begins razing the city. During the final battle, however, Leviathan is defeated and, to survive, transfers himself into Yujin's body and flees into the Dark Web, chased by the children. Here, Leviathan decides to offer Haru a choice: free humanity by terminating all its programs, including Yujin, or leave it under its control. Haru chooses to save humanity, promising to dedicate himself to studying artificial intelligence in the future to find a way to bring Yujin back. But at the last moment, Yujin stops Haru from initiating self-destruction and decides to do it herself, sparing him the guilt.
In the final scene, Yujin reappears at the Kashinoki bookstore, though this could just be Haru's imagination.
