going into this book i was a bit nervous because everyone said it was like knives out and when a book is compared to something i love i get nervous because they usually don't compare but this one definitely is amazing, it isn't too much like knives out actually. it also reminds me of the princess diaries and i'm not just saying that because there was a makeover scene.
this book has great characters, the main character is so likable! and it has my favorite trope where a girl has to live with a bunch of brothers who are stand offish. it has a love triangle which i LOVE! but most importantly the mystery kept me on my toes. it's not very much a thriller but i still highly recommend this book!...more

i try not to read books anyone with books with police brutality because i’d like to see more black joy in books and i think that black people have seen enough trauma but i decided to pick up this book because i heard it had a different perspective than most. from the moment i started this book i knew i’d love. it made me so frustrated and angry, it invoked so many emotions from the first chapter and that’s exactly what i look for in books. the main character is pretty much meh for me, she’s emotionally detached and very impulsive but i still loved the authors writing. she had some one liners that had me thinking about them for hours. this also has cheating and typically i hate cheating in books but the girlfriend in this one is a violently racist asshole so i actually don’t care. this book touches on so much more than just police brutality. they talk about black wall street, lightskin privilege in families and generational mental health. i cannot wait time read more from this author. ...more

I mean, of course i did. it’s dark academia. I enjoyed this world so much. This book in particular did have a lot of world building but i didn’t mind because there were so many things i found cool. For Example the moving stairs you couldn’t be on after classes because you don’t know where you’ll end up or the fact that you can’t be in your room after curfew. Also, these kids were crazy as hell and literally was trying to kill the main character El.
I know a lot of people don’t like El but i personally loved her. I feel like i really understand her and maybe that’s because i see myself in her? She’s so stubborn and i love the fact that she was a boss bitch. She was so smart and came up with things i probably would’ve never thought of.
I really loved the romance as well. Orion is such an interesting character and the fact that he was always saving El was so funny to me. Their romance kind of gave off grumpy x sunshine vibes. El being the grumpy and Orion being the sunshine. He was such a golden boy but the fact that they understood each other and related to each other was so sweet.
I also really enjoyed the writing. I need to check out some of Novik’s other books because the writing in this one was so amazing.
This book was so great and i honestly can’t wait until the next book. Especially after that ending? i need the second book like yesterday!...more

Roger being good at spelling and loving to read but being bad at math. Doger being amazing at math and being bad at spelling (while growing up) i love how before they discovered they were twins they just thought they were friends but were so dependent on each other. ...more

The craziest thing about this book? Is that this shit could actually happen. Usually when i read thrillers i’m like “okay this could happen” but like The craziest thing about this book? Is that this shit could actually happen. Usually when i read thrillers i’m like “okay this could happen” but like it’ll have to be like the craziest thing ever but this book? This shit DOES happen. I enjoyed this book because it brought out the right kind of anger, frustration and fear. There were points where the characters were mircoaggressive and I wanted to put it down so bad but I literally could not put this book down.
I think the pacing was really slow at the beginning but i was enjoying the characters and their dynamic so i didn’t mind all too much, i think if it was maybe 50 pages less it would fix the pacing? but honestly i didn’t care all that much because once you get to the part where the plot twist at the end kicked in the pacing got so much better!
I really liked the main character, Sydney. I don’t think she was boring or useless like most main characters in thrillers. Maybe it’s because i got to read her use AAVE which added to her character. Which, the AAVE is another thing U enjoyed. Maybe it’s because I don’t read many books let alone thrillers where the characters look like me and tsk me. Also enjoyed her dynamic with Theo, ugh I just love a pathetic loser white man, you know?
I kind of guessed one of the plot twists but I didn’t mind, I like how it played out and I was still spooked. A lot of this book was scary but in the way that this could actually happen to me, like the uber scene? I take ubers very frequently and I get so scared when they take the wrong turn even when i can see that their gps told them to go that route.
I really enjoyed this book and it was actually the very first thriller i’ve ever given 5 stars. I love that Alyssa Cole branches out a lot with her genre’s and i could see her being the ‘Jordan Peele’ of thriller’s. I hope she rights more thrillers in the future....more

This book seriously was I really enjoyed this book, though the lack of plot, Cassandra Clare never fails to make me fall in love with her characters. This book seriously was a damn rollercoaster ride. It felt like I was watching a historical fiction reality tv show. There was so many ships and character I loved then hated but then loved again (yeah I'm looking at you Alastair).
I enjoyed the merry thieves so much and even how the girls joined in on their mischief, I want to see more of all of them as a friend group. I am very excited to see how everything turns out for them in the series. I'm scared because I have so many faves so I'm more prone to someone dying and it breaking my heart.
I don't know if I like this more than Lady Midnight but it's definitely taking City of Heavenly Fire's place as my second fave book. Justice for Jesse and Lucie pls love them so. Lastly, dad Will is so hot and I can't wait to get more of him in the trilogy ugh he's such a dilf....more
