this random ass ya book from a decade ago just changed my life?
all year i’ve been looking for a romance book with a class clown type trope because i this random ass ya book from a decade ago just changed my life?
all year i’ve been looking for a romance book with a class clown type trope because i think it’s really underwritten and couldn’t find anything until i came across this book. this book has been sitting on my want to read shelf for who knows how long and i don’t even know how it got there in the first place?
this book was perfect and had tropes i loved and more! not to mention the other two books really build up the romance like im sorry but romance books just aren’t doing it like this. the parallels and knowing how sewyer felt for kaye because of the previous books was so fun and i love that it was over time and not something we learned from a shitty male pov like most books these days. the friend group means everything to me and i loved that the parents are actually involved in their lives which is shocking for a book written in 2015.
the author doesn’t shy away from talking about sex, drugs and alcohol which makes this feel real. when i was a teen my biggest issue with ya is that they felt fake. not saying these things should be promoted but it should be talked about because like it or not this is what teens talk about, it makes it feel realistic and at times i think shying away from it makes it feel like it’s fake for younger kids. i like that these characters have dated other people before because ya books tend to show their characters date one person and have it be this love that lasts forever which again isn’t realistic.
this book has the classic bad boy x good girl, forbidden love and one of my fave tropes which is when the girls ex bf says they should go on a break bc he expects her to take him back when he’s ready but she moves on instead. the tropes really don’t matter because this book is good! it promotes safe sex while also sharing the importance of going after what you want and not what your parents/friends/partner wants. this is crazy like this book really worked for me. they just don’t make romances this good anymore man...more
read it during my flight home, it was very fun and i loved the writing. i know the jumping around bothered people but honestly idgaf it was g4.5 stars
read it during my flight home, it was very fun and i loved the writing. i know the jumping around bothered people but honestly idgaf it was good either way to me! i relate to the main character at certain parts. its very interesting how even with different backgrounds, poc can relate to each other. there’s a part where the main character jumps out the car (for reasons) and she’s like “nooo my beautiful face” very real tbh ...more
i wasn’t expecting to like this so much because it is hard for me to read tone through manga sometimes but i thineed this as a physical copy and fast!
i wasn’t expecting to like this so much because it is hard for me to read tone through manga sometimes but i think this started off super strong. i loved the main character chihiro like he’s so cute and i like the broody guy. i like the side characters and im sensing a found family here. in a way this reminds me of jjk in the sense of quality and how fun it is. can’t wait to continue on...more

i’ve been loving romances that aren’t too focused on tropes lately and this definitely delivers. this was actually such a good love story, not sure whi’ve been loving romances that aren’t too focused on tropes lately and this definitely delivers. this was actually such a good love story, not sure what i expected going in but i definitely didn’t think i’d come out loving it. i loved all the characters so much like best and nora were everything!! also the smut was actually soo sexy like maybe because there was so much build up to it or the author was just that good. this book had everything i love. it’s about so much more than the romance and i don’t even feel like this was too long, actually i wish it was a bit longer! i’m going to miss bear and nora so much....more
personally, i think twyla was the black one simply because roberta couldn’t read and i feel that was too stereotypical for the black character to be tpersonally, i think twyla was the black one simply because roberta couldn’t read and i feel that was too stereotypical for the black character to be the one that couldn’t read. I think making roberta black while not being able to read is too obvious and i don’t think anything about this book makes it easy for you to figure out which one is which, so for the author to have it that obvious doesn’t make sense to me. Also, i really enjoy the way the friendship was written in this book. for it to be so short it captures their friendship in a way most authors can’t do with 300+ pages....more
i don’t know if it’s because i have insomnia myself or the fact that i read this faster than i could blink but i absolutely loved this book.
i don’t ki don’t know if it’s because i have insomnia myself or the fact that i read this faster than i could blink but i absolutely loved this book.
i don’t know if everyone will love this but surely it’s for me! i loved how it felt like scooby do but adult, i loved the graveyard setting and i loved this weird friend group they formed. i loved that not every character was a college student and that every character had something personal going on even with how short this book is.
one of my favorite tropes is when the found family is an unlikely group, where they form a found family relationship but either the characters hated each other beforehand or they’re so vastly different you wouldn’t expect them to be friends and surprisingly this book does that well! i think Rio does a good job at writing found family’s or group dynamics in general and i hope to see more of that from her in the future.
i do agree with everyone on the fact that it should’ve been longer but mostly because i fell in love with the characters and wanted more from them. i do think it’s the perfect length for this story because i actually don’t think for me that it would’ve worked as a full length novel....more

this book starts off very slowly, you don’t get into the plot until like 20% into the book. the first half of the book you’re learning about the characters and what it’s like for these teen pregnant girls and how it feels to be abandoned in this home. this book was so fascinating to me because i felt like i was there, as if i was one of the girls. as much as i complain about books feeling too long i surprisingly didn’t want it to end.
in a weird way the book felt cozy, it didn’t have much gore or really scary things but to me what these girls were going through was scary enough. even though none of these characters are my favorite i did grow to love all of them and feel so attached to them that i cried a bit during the epilogue. such a great read and it was fun to read in summer since that’s where the book takes place and it just helped so much.
i hope that if you’re reading this and you do decide to pick up the book, that you have as much fun as i did....more
