I’ve been vaguely aware of femicide for a while, but I did not realize it was this bad. Jesus Christ.

Groups that were self-reliant in their work (that is, more volunteer-based, not reliant on outside funding) created more explicitly political work. Groups that were more embedded in institutions in one way or another had more muted outputs, e.g. creating dashboards showing trends but not connecting these trends to harmful actors or causes. We termed this process “strategic neutrality.” These “strategically neutral” groups see themselves as impartial researchers and their work as unbiased, relying on policy makers and activists to politicize whatever trends are surfaced through their “neutral” work.

When you’re proficient with your editor of choice—whatever it is—it disappears into the background. But the moment it cannot handle something easily, it stops being invisible. What baffles me is that so many people treat that friction—the effort of working around a tool’s limitations—as the “fun” part, and then advertise it as evidence that the tool is great.

Part of why these debates turn religious is that a tool choice becomes a flag you plant—it says something about who you are. The “hacker vibe” isn’t a mere aesthetic; it’s tribal signaling, and that’s the real trap. Once your identity is invested in a tool, admitting its flaws starts to feel like admitting something about yourself.

Designing an ergonomic tool is fundamentally about having good defaults, while still allowing escape hatches where they’re possible/needed.

There will be some small winners from the original unbundling chart above, but the really big winner in each category is a horizontal platform for the whole category, eg, community, forums, personals, classifieds, etc. This meets the needs of real people with limited attention units. It also reflects the real world, where people might apply to jobs for several different functions (Indeed), be interested in selling both used furniture and used cars (OfferUp), hiring both a painter and a handyman for your house (Thumbtack), or simply discussing both tech and politics in online forums. Each one of these categories can support just 1 or 2 mega-platform businesses that can scale to be multi-billion dollar companies.

Probably one of the most important ideas in contemporary economics.
