Synopsis:

Good-natured but eccentric community volunteer Hubie Dubois finds himself at the center of a real murder case on Halloween night. Despite his devotion to his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts (and its legendary Halloween celebration), Hubie is a figure of mockery for kids and adults alike.

Lessons Learned 

A few weeks back I posted the trailer for Hubie and thought ugh this looks so bad, yet most of the comments were pretty upbeat. I'm here to say I was wrong and I'm sorry Hubie Halloween was pure joy and none stop fun! Now I will say I groaned a bit when Adam Sandler starting talking in voice for his charter and thought to myself oh no here we go. Thankfully that would quickly fade as the story began to unfold. And to be completely honest its the star power of its young cast that draws you in not the Happy Madison gang. 

Hubie

Hubie himself had a nice charm to him this poor man was both obsessed with and terrified by Halloween. He also plays the local snitch, acting as an amateur cop and alerting the authorities to every tiny infraction, which they find unbearable. “Hubie” is, to some extent, a satire of horror films, as for Sandler, like him or not, his dumb schtick is disarmingly quiet and warm throughout the movie. Sadly his best jokes really do not have much to do with Halloween and that is ok.

Every Holiday season I start to think of my mom and how much she would do for everybody to make the holidays incredible. Then walks in the wonderful June Squibb who plays Hubies mom, whom he still lives with, and in every scene, she unknowingly wears an inappropriate secondhand T-shirt that becomes some of the best gags like “Boner Killer” as the movie plays on. This was so my mom always happy and would wear or say things like this and even she did not understand. Squibb warmed my heart every time she lite up the screen man I loved this woman!

A New Tradition

Sandler has had a rough go with critics, often for good reason. But “Hubie Halloween” proves that the problem isn’t that he’s starring in stupid movies; it’s that he’s not starring in enough of the right stupid movies. It's safe to say Hubie Halloween will be watched yearly here in the Man Cave! Maybe I'm over-hyping a little bit but man we all loved this movie.

Oh, and speaking of those Disney stars it was a sweet touch that this movie was dedicated to Cameron Boyce. Boyce was going to appear in the movie before his untimely death on July 6, 2019. He would have reunited with his former co-stars Peyton List and Karan Brar from Disney Channel's Jessie (One show I can tolerate) as well as his former co-stars from Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2. 

Definitely give this one a shot and by all means, you need to check out AEIOU...And sometimes Why? blog post as he shared images from the set, as this was filmed in his neck of the woods.

2020 Has Been the Year of the Doc! What I watched in September 2020.

 Oh, September when its time to fire up the VCR and watch some of those old Halloween specials to get the spooky juices flowing. Sure I watched a few in preparation for the upcoming count down to Halloween but a few were just for pure enjoyment. As soon as that crisp air starts to flow my mind started drifting towards Halloween. But holy black cats what a year so far watching Documentary's this month I watched 4!

Ready for a hilarious adventure? Hop aboard a broomstick for this tale of two dim-witted witches who accidentally turn their sister into a jack-o-lantern on Halloween...and that's just the beginning of the story. Join the silly sisters as they turn a typical suburban town topsy-turvy with their inept attempts to rescue their sister-turned-pumpkin on Halloween night. Watch them fly around town, go trick-or-treating for the first time, and pop in on a children's Halloween party. These "Witches in Stitches" will delight children with their entertaining tactics and humorous happenings. This is one Halloween story that can be enjoyed all year long!

Larry the Cable Guy is back to Git R Done. Remain Seated, his latest solo special will show you why this Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum recording artist and Billboard award winner is at the top of his game. Coming to you straight from the Rialto Square Theater in Joliet, IL to your seat at home! 

Was looking for something lite and airy to watch the other day and this popped up on Amazon Prime. Once I read it was filmed in Joliet (not too far from me) I thought hey why not. Boy, I'm glad I did this one is a hoot. Never was much of a Larry the Cable Guy fan but he had me rolling, as well as the wife and she never laughs.

Watched on Friday, September 25, 2020. The Social Dilemma 2020 (Netflix)

This documentary-drama hybrid explores the dangerous human impact of social networking, with tech experts sounding the alarm on their own creations. This was way scarier to watch than most horror movies. IF you or a loved one is addicted to social media this just might be a wake-up call for you. I still steer away from Facebook about man Twitter and Pinterest falls on this list as well. I would not doubt that High Schools show this in history classes.

Watched on Friday, September 25, 2020. In Search of Darkness: A Journey Into Iconic '80s Horror  (Shudder)

An exploration of ’80s horror movies through the perspective of the actors, directors, producers, and SFX craftspeople who made them, and their impact on contemporary cinema. This one took me days to watch as it clocks in at a whopping 4 hours long! I feel it skipped some pretty important movies and for a horror junky like myself, I did not see anything new for me. Yet it is a nice look back at the goopy horror of the 80s. 

Watched on Thursday, September 24, 2020. Notre-Dame: Race Against the Inferno (Disney+)

On 15th April 2019, during Holy Monday Mass, the world’s most famous cathedral caught fire. Notre-Dame de Paris was ablaze in minutes, as an epic battle unfolded for heroic French firefighters. Under the gaze of the world’s media, they fought the inferno for more than 15 hours. Exclusive footage and interviews bring vividly to life the moment-by-moment courage of the Paris fire and police services, as they put their lives on the line to save this historic building.

Wow-what those firefighters went through! This was pretty intense at times.

Giant mutant rabbits terrorize the southwest! Yeah, this was defiantly a fun time as a child it would have traumatized me.

When young Victor’s pet dog Sparky (who stars in Victor’s home-made monster movies) is hit by a car, Victor decides to bring him back to life the only way he knows how. But when the bolt-necked “monster” wreaks havoc and terror in the hearts of Victor’s neighbors, he has to convince them (and his parents) that despite his appearance, Sparky’s still the good loyal friend he’s always been.

Such a classic Halloween staple I still do not understand why Tim Burton would have been fired by Disney for its creepiness? And yet he helps save the company a few years later.

In the vein of “Harvey”, an invisible creature befriends a 12-year-old boy. Of course, no one else can see him nor believes in him. Oh wow, how is it I have never seen this? And if you have missed it fire up the old Disney+ time machine sit back and relax as Mick Garris (Yep the one that brought us so many scary movies) weaves a fun tale for the whole family to watch.

A drive-in favorite, this sci-fi classic follows teenagers Steve and his best girl, Jane, as they try to protect their hometown from a gelatinous alien life form that engulfs everything it touches. The first to discover the substance and live to tell about it, Steve and Jane witness the blob destroying an elderly man, then it grows to a terrifying size. But no one else has seen the goo, and policeman Dave refuses to believe the kids without proof.

One of my all-time favorites!

This epic, action-packed Western tells the incredible true story of Bass Reeves, the first black marshal in the Wild West. Having escaped from slavery after the Civil War, he arrives in Arkansas seeking a job with the law. To prove himself, he must hunt down a deadly outlaw with the help of a grizzled journeyman. As he chases the criminal deeper into the Cherokee Nation, Reeves must not only dodge bullets but severe discrimination in hopes of earning his star–and cement his place as a cowboy legend.

Man, I had such high hopes for this one even if it was a low budget attempt it is a story that should be told. Sadly it comes off cold and rather boring. Bass Reeves was the inspiration behind the Lone Ranger who happens to be my favorite cowboy. With that said this one is a hard pass.

Discover the legacy of Action Park, a very real amusement park that used to exist that has something of a legendary story. Not only because the park was wild and far less structured than something like Disneyland, but because many people were seriously injured, and some even died. While it sounds made up, this place was very real.

Former “Saturday Night Live” star Rob Schneider returns to the stage and shares his take on life, love, and dinosaur dreams in this stand-up special. Ending with a surprise duet performance with his daughter, singer-songwriter Elle King, Rob talks about potty training his young daughters and his own pig potential.

"What is he saying? It’s so low and not funny. So disappointed I really like Rob Schneider." Pulling out the turkey leg for this one! SKIP IT.

100 of the 75 movie goal I set for 2020

Wow up to 100 movies and it feels pretty good if I do not say so myself. 17 of those 100 are documentary, not sure what it is this year but searching for a good story seems to come int that format. I have also watched more stand up than ever before with Larry the Cable Guy of all things bringing me to tears. What a crazy world this has been.

Of course, scary movie month is upon us I would like to squeeze 2 movies a week in for October. I have a few bucket list movies that I have inquired that I will jump on asap as well as a few I would like to revisit. 

Here is to Shocktober.

Hubie Halloween. Yay or Nay?

Hubie Halloween Coming October 7th 

Ok, Halloween fans now that a trailer has dropped for the new Adam Sandler flick what do you think? I'm sure I will watch it for the greater good of this blog and all things Halloween but I just might have to drink a few witches brews beforehand.

Despite his devotion to his hometown of Salem (and its Halloween celebration), Hubie Dubois is a figure of mockery for kids and adults alike. But this year, something is going bump in the night, and it's up to Hubie to save Halloween.

Hubie Halloween is just one of several new movies and shows coming to Netflix this Halloween, and people seem to be excited! the movie reunites a bunch of comedy faves all in one star-studded cast. Like many prolific people in Hollywood, Sandler definitely has some collaborators he likes to work with a lot, and some of them show up in this cast, but there are also plenty of exciting newcomers to watch out for.

It's Here My Long List of What I watched in August.

Wow, its September already! I know so many people are ready for the fall and our happy place of Pumpkin spice, rustling leaves, and cooler weather. This was a summer for the history books that is for sure. That week in August with no power killed my vacation movie-watching plans hard but was still able to check out a few shorts on Disney+ along with a few documentaries. This was also the last few weeks of Full Moon Horror Streaming site so I had to capitalize on that early on so the horror movie genera received some much-needed love.  So here you go the full list of my August viewing for Your pleasure.

Watched on Monday, August 31, 2020. Netflix

This documentary captures the extraordinary twists and turns in the journeys of Rubik's Cube-solving champions Max Park and Feliks Zemdegs. You really find yourself rooting for Max who has autism and the friendship he has with Feliks. This is the heart and soul of the story as the Cube solving takes a backseat. Never the less this was a fun little story the runs a fas 45 minutes. All of us on the couch was amazed by the story.

Roger Rabbit once again is chosen for the dangerous task of babysitting Baby Herman and everything is going to be just fine. I remember working at the theatre when this was a big deal. This short played just before Honey I Shrink the Kids even getting a predominate spot on the poster shouting this one out. Nothing over the top crazy for me tho but then again I'm one of those rare birds that do not like Roger Rabbit.

Nerdy Walter Paisley (Dick Miller), a maladroit busboy at a beatnik café who doesn’t fit in with the cool scene around him, attempts to woo his beautiful co-worker, Carla (Barbara Morris), by making a bust of her. When his klutziness results in the death of his landlady’s cat, he panics and hides its body under a layer of plaster. But when Carla and her friends enthuse over the resulting artwork, Walter decides to create some bigger and more elaborate pieces using the same artistic process.  You know I really wanted to like this one. I watched the Dick Miller documentary and that really pushed me in this direction. Miller is wonderful and Morris needed more acting jobs she was a "Cool Cat" sadly the story is a tad rough around the edges. If I did not watch this right after the documentary I may have enjoyed it more.

A documentary about veteran character actor Dick Miller, whose career in and outside of Hollywood has spanned almost 200 films across six decades, featuring a diverse range of interviews with directors, co-stars, and contemporaries. If you have Amazon Prime this is a really great watch about a career that you never knew he had. Miller is the king of B movies along with some of the best blockbusters of his time. Add this to your queue now.

Lighthearted comedy chronicling the exploits of the employees at a record store. Came for Tim Thomerson but really enjoyed Ted Lange! Goofy 70s vibe with no real story involving the record store but still Worth the visit. With so much Cheese you will need to bring an extra bag of nachos.

At the dawn of the space race, two radio-obsessed teens discover a strange frequency over the airwaves in what becomes the most important night of their lives and in the history of their small town. I love period pieces like this I love small town 50s period pieces the most sadly this one just did not do it for me. I'm like the only one too the average rating on letterboxd is 3 1/2 stars. Something just did not hit right for me.

Though legendary lyricist Howard Ashman died far too young, his impact on Broadway, movies, and the culture at large was incalculable. Told entirely through rare archival footage and interviews with Ashman’s family, friends, associates, and longtime partner Bill Lauch, Howard is an intimate tribute to a once-in-a-generation talent and a rousing celebration of musical storytelling itself.

 Not quite the tear-jerker I was expecting. A fantastic story of Howard's life that all Disney fans should watch.

Oh, thank you so much, Joe Bob Briggs and your Last Drive-In on Shudder. Ten years after the events of the original movie, Victor Crowley is mistakenly resurrected and proceeds to kill once more and some more... this was a fun ride made special by all the cast members that came on the show to talk about the film.

Man Joe Bob killed it for his Summer special "slumber party" on Shudder. Slumber Pary Massacre 2 has been on my watch list for years! What a great way to watch it while tweeting along with other horror fanatics.  Courtney, the sister of a survivor from the 1st movie, and the members of her rock band go to a condo for the weekend to play music and have fun with their boyfriends. Courtney’s dreams are of her sister, who is in a mental institution, warning her of having sex, and the dreams begin to spill into real life, threatening Courtney and her friends as they begin experiencing an attrition problem.

A boy named Harley and his family attend a taping of The Banana Splits TV show, which is supposed to be a fun-filled birthday for young Harley and business as usual for Rebecca, the producer of the series. But things take an unexpected turn – and the body count quickly rises. Can Harley, his mom, and their new pals safely escape?
