AUSTRIA ~ Fächerturm - Zeiselmauer - Tulln - UNESCO ~

... View of the oldest late Roman building in a town with two thousand years of history... Zeiselmauer is described as having the most preserved Roman-era buildings in Lower Austria after Carnuntum, with remains including Roman walls, a fan tower, a granary, and a flag sanctuary... this fan-shaped (“Fächerturm”) tower with an original height off 9 meters which looming walls are still preserved is of eminent importance because it is the only free-standing construction of that type preserved in Austria... in neighbouring countries there are no comparable examples of a remaining construction volume like this either... Thanks Patrik!【ツ】

The Danube Limes (Western Segment) comprises the remains of the Roman border along the Danube River. This 600 km stretch of military installations was linked by a military road parallel to the river. The Pannonian fleet patrolled the river. A series of legionary fortresses, with thousands of soldiers each, formed its backbone. Civilian towns developed around them, and their Roman citizens introduced Roman culture (such as baths, shrines and an amphitheatre) to their surroundings.

In 2021, the western segment of the Danube Limes were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

AUSTRIA ~ Schönbrunn Palace - Vienna - UNESCO ~

... Beautiful view of one of the most impressive and well preserved Baroque ensembles of its kind in Europe... the palace features over 1,440 rooms, 40 of which can be visited, and is the largest palace in Austria... there are two magnificent gardens that are filled with various sculptures, fountains, and pavilions... whether you're looking for a romantic stroll or simply want to soak up some culture, the Schonbrunn Palace is an unforgettable experience... probably the most popular tourist attraction in Vienna: the palace and associated attractions pull in over three million visits each year... with nice palace garden stamp...Thanks a lot Monika! (✿◠‿◠)

The Schonbrunn Palace was originally built as a hunting lodge for the Habsburg dynasty beginning in the 16th century. Before it became a palace, Schonbrunn was owned by members of the Habsburg family for centuries. In 1683, Emperor Leopold I remodeled it and added a formal garden with terraces and fountains.

By the turn of the 18th century, Maria Theresa had taken over control of the palace from her father. She ordered extensive renovations to be done and turned it into an opulent summer residence for the Imperial family. During this period, many of the existing Baroque structures were constructed and vast gardens were established around the palace grounds.  After the passing of Maria Theresa in 1780, Schönbrunn Palace saw no use until Emperor Franz II  came to power during the early 1800s.

When plans for the Congress of Vienna began forming in 1814/15, it became apparent that renovations were sorely needed at Schönbrunn if it was going to meet modern standards. Under court architect Johann Aman's supervision and with a refurbished façade, this palace acquired its famous look which still stands today.  In 1918, after World War I ended, Schonbrunn Palace was seized by the Republic of Austria and declared a state property.

In 1996, UNESCO added the palace and gardens to their World Heritage List.

Even before that, international UN organisations such as the United Nations Organisation for Industrial Development (UNIDO) or the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had moved their operations to Vienna in the Fifties and Sixties.

Lovely view of a white castle church... one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Tyrol...perched on top of a 14m cliff above the village... on the top floor of the 42-metre-high tower, which can only be reached by climbing about 150 steps, is the originally Gothic Chapel of Grace... the stunning views over Mariastein's surrounding area are worth every step... it houses the well-known Gothic picture of the Madonna, which has been a major attraction for religious pilgrims since the Middle Ages... on the floor below, the Chapel of the Cross was set up in the 16thC for the numerous pilgrims... with great matching castle church stamp👍... AUSTRIA ~ Maria Plain Pilgrimage Church - Salzburg ~

... Beautiful church view... a Baroque exterior, three-story, two-tower facade tower and statues of the four evangelists and the Virgin and Child above the entrance... it is remarkable for its architectural value... and also offers visitors a magnificent panorama extending from Salzburg city to the Alps... it has been a beloved pilgrimage destination since the 17thC... pilgrims and trekkers exploring the Austrian stages of the Way of Saint James pass by Maria Plain... this famous pilgrimage church also inspired Mozart to compose his famous "Coronation Mass" in honor of the sacred painting of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary found in this church... Thanks a lot Dustin! ❀◕ ‿ ◕❀

The story of Maria Plain goes back to the times of the Thirty Years War. In 1652, the purportedly miraculous painting "Mary with Baby Jesus" by Rudolf von Grimming came to the Plainberg outside Salzburg, where it was kept in a wooden chapel.

After barely a year, the original painting had to be returned. However, because of the constant influx of pilgrims, a copy of the picture was made and housed in a new chapel.

In 1671, Archbishop Max Gandolf decided to construct a large pilgrimage church. Built according to the plans drawn up by Giovanni Antonio Dario, the church was consecrated on 12 August 1674. Two years later, they were also successful in bringing the original painting back to Salzburg.

AUSTRIA ~ Almabtrieb festival - Tyrol - UNESCO ~

... And as last Austrian holiday postcard😊 colorful decorated cattle🐄... the cattle procession "Almabtrieb" is an old tradition and is celebrated every year in the Alpine region of Austria... when it's summer, the Austrian mountain cows stay high up in the mountains... but when fall starts, the farmers bring them down to their homes in the valley where they'll spend winter... they each get a “Bischl” or head decoration as well as an Austrian cowbell... the headgear is made out of evergreen and flowers found in the Alpine meadows, combined with colourful ribbons, glitter, and mirrors...  the clanging of the cowbells are essential to keeping the bad demons away on their way down into the valley... they walk with them for several hours to reach their home, where they're welcomed by the entire village... Big Thanks once more Dustin for thinking of me while on holiday! (✿ ♥‿♥)

The cattle drives of the cows in Austria take place around the end of September but not all on the same date. It's the farmers who decide when they'll organize their cattle drive.

It takes months to prepare all the headpieces each year and sometimes new ones are made as well – all by hand. While the decorations are ready, they haven't been coupled with their carriers yet and it takes quite a while before the farmer and his helpers have decided which cow will wear which headpiece and which alpine cowbell. That decision is based on the weight of the decoration and the strength of the cow. The little ones get a small bell and a very light headpiece, while the strongest cows get the biggest and heaviest decorations.

Transhumance, the seasonal droving of livestock along migratory routes in the Mediterranean and in the Alps are on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists

AUSTRIA ~ Mirabell Mozartkugeln ~

... A delicious postcard😋...Mirabell Mozart chocolate balls... and I can know it because I got them last week from my niece as a gift😊... these typical Austrian specialty has a rich tradition and is a famous example of Austrian confectionery... they are an Austrian souvenir and have become a synonym for Austrian culture and tradition around the world... there are several different brands... but te original balls are those by Furst but Dustin favorite ones are made by Mirabell (also the ones I got👍)... with lovely Postcrossing stamp💙 and special postmark... Thanks a lot Dustin!ヽ(ヅ)ノ

The history of the Mozartkugenl began in Salzburg where the ingenious composer W. A. Mozart was born in 1756.

About 100 years after  composer W. A. Mozart had lived and worked, Paul Fürst, a master confectioner from Salzburg, developed the Mozartkugeln.

He began by forming small balls of marzipan, which he coated in a praline cream before spearing them on little wooden sticks. After that, he dipped these balls in warm bittersweet chocolate until coated with an even chocolate layer. This was the birth of the Mozartkugel.
