Initially, whole Jewish families were marched for some two kilometres on foot to the gas chambers.
From 1944, transports were brought straight to the crematoriums.

In Auschwitz-Birkenau 5 crematoriums with gas chambers were in operation. 6-7 kilograms of Cyclone B gas was enough tot kill about 1500 people within just over a dozen minutes.
It is estimated that around 1.6 million people were killed in the Auschwitz camps.
While Auschwitz was built for labor, Birkenau was built for extermination.
A Martyrdom Museum was set up here in 1947, and in 1979 Auschwitz-Birkenau was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites
