SRI LANKA ~ Lighthouses ~

... Nice "oversized" postcard showing lighthouse stamps issued by Sri Lankan Post in 1996...  most of the lighthouses in Sri Lanka were built during the British rule of the island... they are unique and represent a high architectural and historical value... at present, only about half of the thirty standing lighthouses are currently reported as operating... though some standing lighthouses are unmanned and inactive, they are a reassuring sign for passing mariners... with also a great lighthouse stamp! Thanks a lot Ravindra!(✿ ♥‿♥)

Shown on postcard:

1. Little Basses Lighthouse
2. Great Basses Lighthouse
3. Devinuwara (Dondra) Lighthouse
4. Galle Lighthouse

A lighthouse over the years helped many countries for trade and transportation.

Putting up lighthouses was often difficult. They were built on exposed areas with no nearby roads, so Wood and other materials had to be delivered by boat, sometimes on dangerous seas.

The lighthouses were important landmarks that have kept sailors and ships safe.

Sri Lanka ~ Barberyn Lighthouse - Barberyn Island - Beruwala ~

... Great scenic lighthouse view situated on a small island among many palm trees... a slice of paradise nestling in the Indian Ocean... the tower stands at the edge of a cliff battered by waves and wind... built to serve as an aid for navigation, and to warn marines of hazardous coastlines... a ten minute boat ride will take you to this lighthouse, away from the bustle of the mainland... Barberyn lighthouse is still active and open to the public... Thanks a lot Ravindra!!¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Beruwala Lighthouse was built by the British in 1928. It still functions as a lighthouse. Standing 50 feet above sea level on a cliff, hard rock’s surround it and protect it from the battling waves.

Beruwala is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Sri Lanka.

There are only four international lighthouses in Sri Lanka today, one being the Beruwala Lighthouse. All ships and boats going to the Maldives have to pass the Beruwala lighthouse which is one of their most important functions.

Prince Edward Island, smallest of the ten Canadian provinces, is located in the southern part of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, separated from the mainland by the Northumberland Strait. The province is also called 'PEI' or simply 'the Island'. The capital city is Charlottetown. Prince Edward Island is Canada's greenest province and  famous for its red sand beaches, red soil and potatoes.

In Prince Edward Island it's hard to take a step without bumping into one larger than life, fictional character, Anne of Green Gables. Charlottetown  is devoted to all things about Anne. In  Cavendish in north-central P.E.I. you can  visit the Green Gables house. Lucy Maud Montgomery was one of Canada's most prolific writers, and Anne's whole imaginative world has been re-created here.

The St. Peters Island lighthouse was built in 1880 and was completed in time to be put in operation at the opening of navigation in 1881 and is 10.4 in height. This tower is typical of the broad-based, steeply-sloping short towers.

"Ocracoke Island, 14 miles long is rich in maritime history and maintains the aura of quaint, quiet fishing villages of yesterdays"...

Global Forever stamp that shows the beauty of our entire planet. (Issued: 28-01-2013)

Ocracoke Light was built in Hyde County, on Ocracoke Island in 1823. The lighthouse stands 75 feet (23 m) tall. Its diameter narrows from 25 feet (8 m) at the base to 12 feet (3.7 m) at its peak and it is the oldest operating lightstation in North Carolina.

It is believed that an Indian village once existed at the site of the lighthouse.

The island of Ocracoke is a part of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is one of the most remote islands in the Outer Banks, as it can only be reached by one of three public ferries, private boat, or private plane. The entire island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Wonderful beach with lighthouse...I think there is always something magical about them... The marking the lines between land and sea, sea and sky... Thanks a lot Rose!!

Great stamp (I think created on stamp.com)...unique and with a turtle, one of my favorite animals...

One of the largest lighthouses on the Atlantic coast. The present Cape May Lighthouse was built in 1859. It is a successor to two previous lighthouses lost to the sea by sand and erosion. In the foreground, the ocean surf rolls onto the beach.
The Cape May Lighthouse is one of the regions's most familiar, most photographed and most painted landmarks.

NEW ZEALAND ~Cape Reinga~

What a great end of the week... The colors and view are amazing...
And the story behind this place is so mysterious: According to the Māori mythology the spirits of the dead travel to Cape Reinga on their journey to the afterlife in their spiritual homeland (Reinga means the leaping-off place).
....Again another place on my wishlist for a visit!:-)

Situated at the northern tip of New Zealand, Cape Reinga has a spiritual significance as the place where the spirits of the dead depart to their ancestral home of Hawaiiki. Here the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean.

USA ~Northern Carolina Lighthouses~

Sent by Sheila. For centuries, lighthouses have been erected to protect ships and guide them safely away from low shoals. Each lighthouse has individual markings making it readily identifiable from a distance. Most of them are open for tourists and visitors providing a historic view of times gone by.
