Only the United Nations is permitted to issue postage stamps, even though it is an organization and not a country or a territory. Today the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) is the only postal authority that issues stamps in three different currencies: U.S. dollars, Swiss francs and euros. Unfortunately the stamps are not cancelled😔... 

The headquarters of the United Nations is a distinctive complex in New York City, that has served as the official headquarters of the UN since its completion in 1952.

Officially an international territory, the Headquarters is technically not part of the United States and has been described as "a little city of all nations." 

The United Nation was formed in the year 1945 after the Second World War and in 1947 the current United Nations Flag was for the first time officially effective. There are 3 other additional, subsidiary, regional headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland), Vienna (Austria), and Nairobi (Kenya).

Pittsfield is the biggest city and the county seat of Berkshire County, Massachusetts. The city's history began as hunting grounds for Native Americans, the area was originally inhabited by the Mohegan. 

The town was first settled by Europeans starting around 1753, when settlers from nearby Westfield began making progress on the land. In 1791 Pittsfield was incorporated as a city.

Cuyahoga National Park is the only national park in Ohio and was established as a national recreation area in 1974 and re-designated as a national park in 2000.

It covers an area of 132.67 km² and is known for its stunning views, deep canyons, and unique geological formations.The park is also home to a variety of plant and animal life, including over 1,000 species of plants and a variety of birds, reptiles, and mammals.

The park its name comes from the Native American word "Ka-ih-ogh-ha," meaning "crooked river," referring to the Cuyahoga River that runs through the park.

The United States Congress created the park in 1934. President Franklin D. Roosevelt officially opened it in 1940.The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is huge, covering about 2,114 km². The range was named for the smoke-like fog that hangs over its forested peaks. 

The park is home to a large diversity of plants and animals. There are more than 4,000 plants, 140 species of trees, about 65 species of mammals, 200 varieties of birds, 67 native fish species, and more than 80 types of reptiles and amphibians. About 1,500 bears are said to call the Smokies home.

The park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

The Nittany Lion Shrine at Pennsylvania State University was dedicated on October 24, 1942 during homecoming. Heinz Warneke and stonecutter Joseph Garatti created it from a 13-ton block of Indiana Limestone. The shrine is a gift of the class of 1940 and rests in a natural setting of trees near the Recreation Building.

The Nittany Lion as Penn State's mascot originated with Harrison D. Joe Mason in 1904. While attending a baseball game against Princeton, Mason and team members were shown a statue of Princeton's Bengal tiger as an indication of the merciless treatment they would encounter on the field. Since Penn State did not have a mascot, Mason replied with an instant fabrication of the Nittany Lion, fiercest beast of them all, that would overcome even the tiger.

Penn State is a Pennsylvania-based, top-ranked public university that educates students worldwide. Outside the classroom, students have opportunities to round out their education through entrepreneurship, philanthropy, research, internships, and more.

Historic Moravian Bethlehem National Historic Landmark District constitutes approximately 14 acres in the heart of the City of Bethlehem and was created under the auspices of the original Moravian congregation in Hernhut, Germany. It was to be the principal center for Moravians in the New World serving as both the religious and administrative center. From here, they sent missionaries throughout the American colonies and to the West Indies.

In 2024, it became a World Heritage Site, together with other Moravian church settlements in Denmark, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

...  Great aerial view of Alcatraz Island... the massive prison building on the island's crest dominates the view... after visiting a few Hawaiian island, the last stop on my nephew's holiday was San Francisco... and no trip to San Francisco is complete without seeing Alcatraz island... better known by its famous moniker, "The Rock",  one of America’s most feared prisons that no criminals wanted to be sent to... despite the steep cliffs, several would-be escapees chose this side to make their bid for freedom... a visit to the island includes a tour of the cell house where visitors can see how the prisoners lived... although the last inmates were transferred off the island in 1963, the main prison block, with its steel bars, claustrophobic cells, mess hall, library and "dark holes," is still structurally intact... while at Alcatraz, you have stunning views of the San Francisco skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge... Alcatraz Island is a small island 2.01 km offshore from San Francisco.The island was developed in the mid-19th century with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, and a military prison. In 1934, the island was converted into a federal prison, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. The strong currents around the island and cold water temperatures made escape nearly impossible, and the prison became one of the most notorious in American history.

Among the 1,545 men sent there, a few were famous: Al “Scarface” Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, Arthur “Doc” Barker, Alvin “Creepy Karpis” Karpavicz, Robert “The Birdman” Stroud, Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson, and Meyer “Mickey” Cohen.

"Herb Kawainui KāneHerb Kāne’s artworks illustrating the history and culture of the Hawaiian and Polynesian islands are awe-inspiring glimpses into another world. His images of tall ships and oceangoing canoes, goddesses and native dancers delight people all over the world." 

There are as many versions of how Madame Pele came to Hawaii as there are lava rocks on Hawaii Island. One of them is: Pele traveled from Tahiti to Hawaii by canoe, being chased by her sister Namaka, who wished to put an end to Pele’s fires as well as Pele herself. As she moved from one island to another, it is said that Pele tried to draw lava from the ground and light fires throughout the journey. She traveled through Kauai, where there is an old hill called Puu ka Pele, meaning Pele’s Hill, and Oahu, Molokai, and Maui before coming to Hawaii. Finally, Namaka caught up with Pele in Hawaii and the sisters battled to death. Namaka emerged triumphant, putting out the fires of Pele’s wrath. After this, Pele became a spirit and went to live in the Kilauea Volcano.

Maui  is the second largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago and has the world’s largest dormant volcano. Mount Haleakala forms over 75% of the island, while the other 25% is formed by another volcano, Mauna Kahalawai.There are 81 accessible beaches on Maui, including white, gold, black, and red sand, more than any other Hawaiian island. 

In August 2023, a series of wildfires destroyed approximately 80% of Lahaina and claiming at least 102 lives in the coastal town. The disaster became known as the deadliest modern-day fire in the U.S. and the worst catastrophe ever to impact the islands.

USA ~ Nakale Blowhole - Maui ~

... Hawaiian beaty nr 2💙... the Nakale Blowhole is an impressive, natural wonder in the lava fields of Maui... the approximately 30 m tall fountain beats from a shallow pool close to the sea... it shoots water high into the air regularly due to its windward (and windy) location and near-constant ocean swell activity... it is one of the most amazing sights on the island... but it is important to remember that people have died at the Maui blowhole... the area surrounding the spout is far more dangerous than it may appear, even on calm days... The Nakalele Blowhole is located on the backside of West Maui near the northern most tip of Maui.

A blowhole is hole in the ground that connects to an underground, partially submerged ocean cave. The cave and opening are shaped in such a way that when the ocean rises or waves crash into it, a jet of water and air is violently forced out through the hole. The higher the tide and swells, the more spectacular the eruptions.

Waikiki is a Honolulu neighborhood and beach on the south shore of the island of Oʻahu in the U.S. state of Hawaii. Waikiki Beach is one of six beaches in the district.Waikiki was the first capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1795 to 1796.

The name Waikīkī means spouting fresh water in the Hawaiian language, for springs and streams that fed wetlands that once separated Waikīkī from the interior.

The Memorial was designed by architect Henry Bacon and was dedicated on May 30, 1922.

The architect  drew inspiration from classical antiquity. The arcade consists of 36 Doric columns representing the states forming the Union at the time of Lincoln’s death in 1865. The names of the states and the date of statehood were inscribed on the frieze above the colonnade. Since Hawaii and Alaska joined the Union in 1959, their names are not included in the attic. Instead, a grey granite plaque was added on the Lincoln Memorial’s steps, recognizing their statehood.

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."

USA ~ Fort Gratiot Light Station - Port Huron - Michigan ~

... Lovely view of the Fort Gratiot Light Station... located next to the new Coast Guard Station and includes the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse... a significant landmark on the west bank of Lake Huron... it is the oldest standing lighthouse in Michigan and still active... the Coast Guard station and lighthouse watch over one of the busiest waterways in the world....the property also features a public beach and a park... weather permitting, the Fort Gratiot Light Station is one of the few operating lighthouses that allow visitors to climb to the tower and step out onto the catwalk for a breathtaking view... a unique vantage point of the U.S. and Canadian waters... Thanks a lot dear Andrene! Fort Gratiot is located in Port Huron, by the Blue Water Bridge that goes into Canada. It was built in 1814 along the St. Clair River to defend the region during the War of 1812.  New lighthouse was built in 1829 north of the military fort in a better sighted location at the head of the St. Clair River.

The 86 ft light stands above the lake level in a conical stone tower, overlaid with red brick that has been painted white. The keeper's cottage and fog whistle house are red.

USA ~ Monticello - Virginia - UNESCO ~

... Lovely view of the East front of the famous Thomas Jefferson house... a historical landmark and architectural icon of Virginia... after retiring from the presidency he lived most of his time at Monticello... it sits atop of a small mountain near his birthplace and means “little mountain” in Italian... it is one of the finest examples of the early Classical Revival style in the US... the house that is now a museum is a three-story brick building topped by an eight-sided dome... the octagonal dome was the first of its kind in the US... rows of columns surround the two main entrances... inside the house are 35 rooms and each room is a different shape... the grounds are meticulously maintained and it has working vegetable and flower gardens... Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826), author of the American Declaration of Independence and third president of the United States, was also a talent architect. He began designing the house in 1768. Construction began soon afterward. It continued for more than 10 years. When Jefferson left for France in 1784, Monticello was mostly finished. While he was in France, Jefferson’s ideas about architecture changed. Many European architects were basing their designs on the buildings of ancient Rome. Jefferson decided to rebuild Monticello in a similar style. When he returned to the United States in 1789, he had much of the house torn down. The redesigned Monticello was completed in 1809. 

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation restored the house and its furniture. It also restored the orchard, vineyard, plantation, and vegetable garden that Jefferson had planted. 

Monticello was designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1987 and is the only presidential or private home that became a UNESCO WHS site in the United States.

... Great view of downtown Skagway with mountains behind... a place that offers an authentic glimpse of the Gold Rush era... tiny in size but big on preservation... it is located on Native Alaskan land, that of the Tlingit people... today, visitors are transported back in time along the seven-block corridor that features historic false-front shops and restaurants, wooden sidewalks, locals in period costumes, and restored buildings, many of which are part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park... it is one of Alaska's most popular visitor attractions (mostly by cruise ships) and should not be missed... In 1898, Skagway  also known as the "Gateway to the Klondike", and the nearby valley of Dyea were the starting place for more than 40,000 gold-rush stampeders who headed to the Yukon primarily by way of the Chilkoot Trail during the Klondike Gold Rush.

The Tlingit people name for the area was skagua, meaning "where the north wind blows."

USA ~ Totem Bight State Historica Park - Ketchikan - Alaska ~

... Beautiful view of a historical park dedicated to the totem pole history in the area... for both the Native Americans and settlers in Ketchikan, totem poles were a huge part of the culture... there are at least 14 restored and re-carved totems as well as a colorful Clan House... they are intricately detailed and hand carved, and are quite breathtaking... visitors can stroll through the rainforest to view the totems and learn the history of the area through these "silent storytellers," created to pass down stories from generation to generation.... a peaceful sanctuary paying homage to the indigenous Tlingit and Haida peoples of Southeast Alaska... Totem Bight State Historical Park is a 13 ha state park sheltered in a lush, temperate rainforest rich in Native history and art, beaches with waterfront views, and indigenous plants and animals.

With the growth of non-Native settlements in Southeast Alaska in the early 1900's, and the decline of a barter economy, Natives moved to communities where work was available. The villages and totem poles they left behind were soon overgrown by forests and eroded by weather. In 1938 the U.S. Forest Services began a program aimed at salvaging and reconstructing these large cedar monuments. By using Civilian Conservation Corps funds to hire skilled carvers from among the older Natives, two things took place: young artisans learned the art of carving totem poles, and totems which had been left to rot in the woods were either repaired or duplicated.

Gateway Arch National Park is located along the Mississippi River in St. Louis, near the Missouri and Illinois border. It is the smallest national park in the United States at 37 ha.

Gateway Arch National Park was formerly known as Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in honor of the late president’s role in expanding the country across the continent.The area surrounding the arch was redesignated as the Gateway Arch National Park in 2018.

Watkins Glen State Park is nestled on the southern tip of Seneca Lake and is known for its trail of 19 waterfalls. Just 1.5 miles in length, you can see all 19 impressive waterfalls along the gorge.

The 778-acre state park has 7.5 miles of scenic hiking trails, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, cabins for rent, and camping facilities for trailers or tents.

Watkins Glen State Park is the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks.
