... Nice views of a fascinating archaeological site... this old medieval cemetery is rich in well-preserved stećak tombstones from the 14th and 15th centuries... out of a total of about 90 monuments, 16 stećak tombstones were found ( sarcophagi)  56 chests and 15 in the form of slabs...  all of them are decorated with the usual ornamentation which are mainly crosses of all kinds, anthropomorphic lilies, scenes of hunting, chariots, duels, various plant motifs, crescents, stars, etc...  the entire site is of interest for having remains (tumuli and cisterns) of human habitation going back to prehistoric times... Thanks Nikola!【ツ】

The 'Stećci Medieval Tombstones Graveyards' are 28 medieval Christian cemeteries across Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia with richly decorated tombstones that have strong cultural and historical meaning.

CROATIA ~ Korčula - UNESCO tentative list ~

... Wonderful aerial island view... like most of Croatia, Korčula is known for its natural beauty... but it is also home to one of the best examples of a fortified medieval Old Town in the Mediterranean... with centuries-old stone buildings with coral-colored rooftops, narrow alleyways, delicious traditional restaurants, and charming shops... picture peaceful beaches nestled in rocky coves with the most crystal clear waters and a backdrop of mountains on the horizon of the Adriatic Sea.... densely covered with evergreen conifers and pines, olive groves and lush vineyards make Korčula one of Croatia’s greenest islands... Marco Polo, the legendary explorer, was said to have been born on the island...  Thanks a lot Andrene!(✿ ♥‿♥)

CROATIA ~ Zadar - UNESCO ~

... Nice aerial view of a small picturesque place situated in the heart of the Adriatic... this unique old town with its 3,000-year-old history with its countless historical buildings and the numerous important attractions are worth exploring... Zadar's famous city walls, called 'Muraj' by locals, fortifications and gates on the historical peninsula are a symbol of the city’s turbulent past...  but there are also many stunning beaches around this coastal town... it is is the second-largest city in Dalmatia and one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country... Thanks a lot Agi! (✿◠‿◠)

Zadar is located on the end of a low-lying peninsula that is separated by the Zadar Channel from the islands of Ugljan and Pašman. The inlet between the peninsula and the mainland creates a natural deepwater harbour. It is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Croatia.

CROATIA ~ Church of St Donatus - Zadar - UNESCO (Tentative) ~

... Beautiful evening view of the most well-known of Zadar’s monuments... imposing building but also absolutely harmonious and original in form...  this church is one of the oldest Croatian churches with unique architecture... the circular shape is typical of the early Byzantine age in Dalmatia... it takes a while to climb all the steps to the bell tower, but you are rewarded by a fantastic panoramic view of the town and the sea... while no longer used for religious purposes, it serves as a venue for many musical events because of its excellent acoustics... with nice special local postmark and also EUROPE stamp taking part in "The Europa Stamps Bird Project 2019" which allows you to scan the stamps in order to hear the bird's song with a special app... Thanks a lot dear Agi for this lovely surprise!! \_(♥‿♥)_/ ...Miss your regularly blog updates.😞
Zadar is historical town in southwestern Croatia, the former capital of Dalmatia.

The Church of St Donatus Chruch name refers to Donatus of Zadar, who began construction this church in the 9thC and ended it on the northeastern part of the Roman forum. It is the largest pre-Romanesque building in Croatia. This mean that their architectural style was signified by roughly cut stone with a layer of malter on the exterior, smaller narrow windows, and 3 apses.

Originally this church was dedicated to the Holy Trinity, but from the 15thC it took the name of Zadar’s Bishop Donat.

CROATIA ~ Old City Harbour - Dubrovnik - UNESCO ~

... After Kotor, today another great card of one of the most visited and popular destinations facing out over a glistening Adriatic sea... the city once described by the great romantic poet Lord Byron as "the Pearl of the Adriatic"... a mix of Baroque and Renaissance architecture... with imposing medieval stone walls surrounding the old town... massive gates and soaring battlements... the city transports visitors back to a time when the fortified city was a major maritime power, commanding the third-largest navy in the Mediterranean... but some say it has become a victim of its own success... flooded with cruise ships and Game of Thrones fans...Thanks a lot Glenn!! (✿◠‿◠)
Dubrovnik is located in the southern coast of Croatia, close to the border of Montenegro and Bosnia.

Old Port Dubrovnik is on the Eastern part of the City and protected by two breakwaters: the Porporela, built in 1873, and the much older Kaše, which was built in 1485 from massive stones piled on wooden foundations.

In the time of the Dubrovnik Republic several forts protected the port: St Luke Fort, St John fortress and Revelin fortress. Today the port is a safe haven for many private boats of local citizens. Alos regular boat line to Lokrum island departs from the Old Port, as well as the boat lines to Cavtat, Mlini, and various sightseeing boat tours.

CROATIA ~ Sibenik - UNESCO ~

... Wonderful nightview of the oldest Croatian city on the Adriatic coast highlighting its majestic cathedral...  it has gorgeous views of the Adriatic Sea and the countless neighboring islands... still not crowded with tourists... the Cathedral of St. James is the most important architectural monument of the Renaissance in the country.... and the only cathedral in Europe that has been built entirely from stone...  no wood, nails, or other bonding compounds were used.... for the "Game of Thrones" fans; episode nine features St James’ Cathedral portals as the Iron Bank of Braavos... and as extra bonus a great matching cathedral stamp👍... Thanks a lot Agi!! (✿ ♥‿♥) So nice to see you back into *postcards* and blogging➙PostcrossingPlanet!!
Just 55 miles north of Split is the city of Sibenik, situated where the River Krka meets the Adriatic. Since 1066, it has been under rule by Croatians, Venetians, Austro-Hungarians, Yugoslavians, and once again back to Croatians—which has resulted in a diversity of international influences.

Built between 1431 and 1535, St. Jacob’s Cathedral witnessed important exchanges in the area of monumental art between North Italy, Dalmatia and Tuscany in the 15th and 16th centuries. Three architects - Francesco di Giacomo, George of Dalmatia and Nicholas of Florence – developed a structure fully made of stone, by using a unique technique for the cathedral’s dome. The most remarkable feature of the exterior are the 71 life-sized sculpted heads of fishermen, peasants, soldiers, old men, teenagers and ordinary citizens--all sculpted with zest and realism.

The Cathedral of St James is a cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

CROATIA ~ Cavtat ~

... A lovely bit different kind of postcard design sent by my niece♥... a tranquil, unspoilt, authentic Dalmatian harbour town on the Adriatic coast... with beautiful palaces, summer houses and hotels, pleasant climate, dense vegetation, beautiful beaches and coves... the more peaceful and less expensive alternative to Dubrovnik... Hééél Erg Bedankt Dorien!! (♥‿♥)

Cavtat is the most southern town in Croatia and is itself part of the Dubrovnik Riviera located around 20 km south of Dubrovnik and only 22 km from the border with Montenegro. It is the centre of the Konavle municipality. Its name is derived from Civitas Vetus, that means old city in Latin Language.

It used to be the flourishing famous city Epidaurum, well known in the ancient times and after the total destruction in the 7th century only the deserted ruins remained. When the Republic bought Cavtat with Konavle in the 15th century it was built up again on the ruins of the old city.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the oldest national parks in Southeast Europe and the largest national park in Croatia. The park was founded in 1949 and is situated in the mountainous karst area of central Croatia, at the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The beauty of the National Park lies in its sixteen lakes, inter-connected by a series of waterfalls, and set in deep woodland populated by deer, bears, wolves, boars and rare bird species. The National Park covers a total area of 300 square kilometres, whilst the lakes join together over a distance of eight kilometres.

In 1979, Plitvice Lakes National Park was added to the UNESCO WHS list. (but UNESCO warned the Park that they will remove them from the list if they become to much touristy.)

Krka is a river in Dalmatia with a length 72.5 km. In the parts of the course where the Krka flows through marly soils, certain extensions are created. In limestone it forms a narrow and deep canyon (up to 200 m), flowing over travertine (a form of limestone) barriers and creating waterfalls.

CROATIA ~ Nature Reserve -Lokrum Island ~

Lots of wonderful views on this great panoramic postcard... Thanks a lot Jobbo!!
Photo: Ju Reservat Lokrum i Katija Dolina,Dr sc.
The island covers 72 hectares and is located on the eastern Croatian coast in the Adriatic Sea, near the city of Dubrovnik. About 15 minutes is needed to get there by taxi-boat which runs from the old city harbour. No hotels have been built on the land and the destination is for day-trippers only.

Lokrum is a Nature and a Special Forest Vegetation Reserve under the protection of UNESCO. Except with the rich forest vegetation, this little island is adorned with a botanical garden filled with exotic plants, eucalyptus, cacti and similar species, as well as with the remains of the 12th century basilica, a 15th century convent and a 19th century summer mansion of Maximilian of Habsburg, with gardens and parks.

CROATIA ~The National Park Kornati~

Received a wonderful view of Croatia today... A really unknown country for me...By searching for information about the place I found a lot that describes its beauty!
...The Adriatic sea belongs to the bluest seas in the world. The colour of this sea is almost unbelievable. Crystal clearness of the sea enables you to see the sea bottom with its various shapes: crevices, holes, caves, red coral, shells and many sorts of fish. Love the stamp too!! :-)

I think this says it all:
"On the last day of Creation, God wished to crown his work and made the Kornati islands out of his tears, the stars and his breath."
George Bernard Shaw

The Kornati islands are situated in the central part of the Croatian Adriatic.
Because of its exceptional landscape beauty, interesting geomorphology, diversity of the coastline and especially because of the rich biocoenoses of the marine ecosystem, greater part of the Kornati maritime zone has been declared a national park in 1980.
