DESERT ISLAND DISCS REVISITED: FROM FRINGE TO FAME - RORY BREMNER (320kbs-m4a/100mb/43mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 24th August 2025
Satirist and impressionist Rory Bremner is castaway by Sue Lawley.
Rory was born in Edinburgh in 1961. A self-confessed show-off, he started doing impersonations at primary school, sending up teachers, sports commentators and Moira Anderson! Entertaining his school friends inevitably developed into performing on stage and he worked as a stand up on the comedy circuit, and notably at the Edinburgh Festival.
The BBC offered him his first TV series, Now Something Else. It ran on BBC2 for seven years. In 1993 he moved to Channel 4, where his show Rory Bremner - Who Else? developed a more hard-edged, satirical and political bite. Rory was also a regular on Spitting Image and Mock the Week.
An opera lover with an academic side to him, Rory has translated three operatic works into English.
In more recent years, Rory has been on Strictly, Who Do You Think You Are? The Imitation Game - not forgetting I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 1st April 2025
Harry Potter star, Rupert Grint, thought he'd found a way to cut his tax bill, until an obscure law tripped him up. That law? One created because of The Beatles.
But why were the Fab Four so desperate to avoid tax? And how did their money-saving scheme end with them losing control of their own music? A story of rock, rebellion, and the long arm of the taxman.

THIS CULTURAL LIFE - 130. ERIC IDLE (320kbs-m4a/99mb/43mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 28th August 2025
Comedian, writer, musician and actor Eric Idle talks to John Wilson about his creative influences. A founding member of the Monty Python comedy troupe, he wrote and performed across their four television series and films, including The Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life. As a songwriter, he was responsible for much of the Python's musical comedy, including Always Look on the Bright Side of Life and The Galaxy Song.
He created the comedy series Rutland Weekend Television and the Beatles parody band The Rutles, which toured and released albums. In 2005, Eric Idle created the Tony Award-winning musical Spamalot, based on the film Monty Python and The Holy Grail which, for over 20 years, has run twice in London's West End and on Broadway and has been staged in 14 countries around the world.

ARCHIVE ON 4 - SELLERS IN THE ATTIC (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 8th September 2025
Comedy writer and historian Glenn Mitchell examines rare and lesser-known recordings of Peter Sellers, presenting a deep insight into the life of the comic legend.
After Peter Sellers died in July 1980, the initial rush of glowing eulogies swiftly made way for often highly condemnatory accounts of his personality and behaviour. Some of these are, admittedly, accurate, others take incidents in isolation without regard for context. Other instances are based on inaccuracies and misassumptions.
There was more perspective among subsequent chronicles but the trend continued to portray Sellers's personal life as one with few, if any, redeeming features.
As regards his work, many accounts have concentrated on the obvious aspects - the 'Panther' films, 'Dr Strangelove' and 'The Goon Show' - but Peter Sellers left far more than that.
The writer and presenter of this programme, Glenn Mitchell, collected Sellers material from an early age. In this personal take on the subject, he chronicles Sellers' career in parallel with his own lifelong interest in the actor's work.
The programme, originally made to mark the 30th anniversary of Sellers death, also explores the softer, compassionate side to the actor's nature, the aspect of the man which once led to him talking a complete stranger - who was perched on a high bridge - out of committing suicide.
Among Mitchell's personal finds is a private recording Sellers made for a television producer whose daughter lost her sight. The recording, not broadcast prior to this documentary, reveals a remarkable and malleable side to his personality, catching him at a very relaxed moment in his life contrasting with his often cited volatile nature.
Mitchell's focus is on the lesser-known Sellers material he has amassed, including home-movie prints, soundtracks, rare interviews and out-takes. The programme also features written archives from his first BBC TV and Radio auditions, and gems like his 1970 performance of the macabre music-hall monologue 'The Ballad of Sam Hall', recorded at Wilton's in East London.
Producer: Stephen Garner
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2010.
ARCHIVE ON 4 - GENERATION GAMES (320kbs-m4a/129mb/57mins)
BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 22nd August 2025
Can video games change lives? And, if so, how? 50 years after the arrival of Pong, gamer and writer Keza MacDonald considers what gaming has done for us. Using the rich BBC Archives, she explores how video games grew from a niche pursuit to a cultural phenomenon which stokes the imagination of, and offers agency to, those who fall for its charms.
Games now influence who we are, what we think and how we act. Keza speaks to collectors, competitive gamers, psychologists, games designers and, mostly importantly, gamers young and old to find out what impact games have had on us. We hear about the deep relationships that millions cherish with Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Donkey Kong, and illustrate the entanglement of life and gaming that is increasingly impossible to sever.
Presenter: Keza MacDonald
Producer: Gary Milne

As you can imagine, Broom's gathered quite a collection since those heady days, from which he draws a selection of gems for this mix.

I've also included one track from my new album Fünfzig on Rekids & an exclusive edit of the Underground Resistance favourite 'Jupiter Jazz'" - Mark Broom

Legendary duo Matt Black and Jonathan More aka Coldcut deliver a boundless career spanning Bleep mix. Since the late 1980s, their sound has morphed from cut-and-paste approaches into some of the foundations of every alternative and electronic hip-hop LP made well into the millennium. The duo's exclusive Bleep mix is testimony to how deep their impact has been over the years, as each selection indelibly refracts from their own innovations. THE BLACK DOG - BLEEP MIX #26 (257kbs-m4a/111mb/60mins)
Bleep podcast: 2018
"The mix was recorded at an illegal party on the edge of Sheffield, an old farmer's barn in the middle of nowhere. We went on early as we wanted 3hrs to build the crowd up and get everyone dancing. We spent our time watching the crowd and mixing to get them up. After 30 minutes we had the place rocking for 3hrs, it was a real buzz, nothing beats that feeling. The DJ after us cleared the floor by playing drillcore, after 45 minutes the party was over. The promoter was well pissed off." - The Black Dog
