THE DOCUMENTARY - PAUL McCARTNEY: BEATLES AND BEYOND (320kbs-m4a/115mb/50mins)
BBC World Service broadcast: 30th August 2025
The Bangles' Susanna Hoffs celebrates the life and legacy of Sir Paul McCartney, from his Liverpool roots to Beatlemania and beyond.
It's a musical journey that moves from the late 1950s to McCartney's skiffle start with John Lennon in The Quarrymen, all the way through to his long solo career, taking in Mersey Beat; the rise of the Fab Four to 1960s icons; and Wings' 1970s success.
We learn how The Beatles could only have come from Liverpool, and how a visit to McCartney's old grammar school led to a significant legacy: the formation of the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA).
Joining Susanna to celebrate McCartney's musical career are author of recent biography Fly Away Paul, Lesley-Ann Jones; veteran songwriter and member of 10cc, Graham Gouldman; LIPA founding principal and chief executive, Sir Mark Featherstone-Witty; Beatles historian and author, David Bedford; lifelong Beatles enthusiast Jean Catharell; BBC Radio Merseyside broadcaster Paul Beesley; Universal Music Group chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge; plus two LIPA alumni - award winning composer Hannah Peel, and singer-songwriter and guitarist Natalie McCool.
Plus, an intimately familial contribution from McCartney's younger brother, Mike McCartney.

ERAS: THE BEATLES - 6. NOW AND THEN (320kbs-m4a/69mb/30mins)
BBC Radio 2 broadcast: 5th November 2023
In the final episode of Eras: The Beatles, we hear the story behind The Beatles' final single Now and Then, including new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.
Narrated by Martin Freeman, the episode also features insight on the new track from Sean Ono Lennon, Olivia Harrison and Peter Jackson.
In 1994, Yoko Ono gave Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr a selection of unfinished demo tapes recorded by John Lennon in the 1970s. Two of those songs, Free as a Bird and Real Love, were arranged and released on 1995's Beatles: Anthology project.
A third demo was never completed. At the time, the tape was deemed too muddy to work with. But, decades later, a new machine-assisted learning programme, pioneered by Get Back director Peter Jackson and his team, made Now and Then, the final Beatles single, possible – with each Beatle performing on the track.
Listen to the story of how it came about as Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and more reflect on the decades and discuss the making of the band's last song.
ERAS: THE BEATLES - 5. REINCARNATION (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 2 broadcast: 5th November 2023
If you're in the biggest band there ever was, how do you cope when it all comes crashing down? That's the question John, Paul, George and Ringo were asking themselves in the spring of 1970, when it was announced that The Beatles were breaking up for good.
In part five, Martin Freeman arrives at the end of an era - and the start of four more. In the aftermath of the split, bitter recriminations give way to new beginnings, and each individual Beatle embarks on a successful solo career. Rumours of a reunion swirl, before a senseless act of violence seems to draw a line under their story as a unit.
But a band like The Beatles never goes away - it lives forever in the people who love it... and this is a story that never really ends.
ERAS: THE BEATLES - 4. REVOLUTION (320kbs-m4a/65mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 2 broadcast: 5th November 2023
When tragedy strikes at the end of 1967, the Beatles are faced with an uncertain future. In the months and years to come, cracks begin to show in the foundations of the world's most powerful musical unit. As each member matured and developed as artists, the end became inevitable.
In Part 4 of Eras: The Beatles, Martin Freeman explores the pressures that broke the biggest band on the planet, and the incredible music that this turbulent era produced.
From the high-minded psychedelia of Magical Mystery Tour to the drama of Let It Be, to the masterpiece that was Abbey Road, the BBC Archive team have scoured their collections to bring you the interviews that shine a light on a dark period for the Beatles.
ERAS: THE BEATLES - 3. REBELLION (320kbs-m4a/64mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 2 broadcast: 5th November 2023
No high lasts forever. And in 1966, the pressures of fame begin to weigh on the globetrotting lives of John, Paul, George and Ringo.
From a close-call with military police in the Philippines, to an all-out religious backlash in the United States, the band starts to question whether being a Beatle is quite so fab after all.
Maybe it's time for something new.
To become a different band entirely.
In Part 3 of Eras: The Beatles, Martin Freeman finds the band at a critical juncture in their story - the extraordinary decision to abandon the live shows that made their name, and embrace the potential of the recording studio with the groundbreaking Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Featuring illuminating archive from the band and their contemporaries, we'll follow the Beatles as they shape popular music for decades to come with the birth of the concept album.

From silver-screen adventures to the invention of Stadium Rock, the BBC Archive team have scoured their collection for the interviews that put you right at the heart of those manic months on the road - including an exclusive find that hasn't been heard since it was first broadcast 60 years ago. Hear the story of the Fab Four's rise, fall and rebirth - and how they changed the world along the way, as narrated by Martin Freeman.

JEFF YOUNG - WHEN ELVIS MET THE BEATLES (320kbs-m4a/128mb/56mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 30th May 2023
One night in 1965, Elvis Presley invited the young pretenders of pop, The Beatles, to visit him at his Los Angeles mansion.
Jeff Young's drama is inspired by that secret meeting in Bel Air on 27th August. That night is probably the most seismic meeting in music. No cameras, no recording equipment - and only those who were there really know what happened.
This imagined recreation is centred around music which breaks the ice between them – with listeners invited to be a fly on the wall.
Discover what songs were played on Elvis' Jukebox and who sang what in a mythical jam session. This wasn't just the meeting of the two biggest music names in history - it was passing of the baton from the King of Rock 'n' Roll to the upstarts from Liverpool.
Starring Tom Hughes as John Lennon and Kevin Mains as Elvis Presley.
Jeff Young says: "I was a big Beatles fan when I was younger, but for this project, initially, I knew very little about the Elvis and Beatles meeting. Then as I began researching the story, the strangeness of the meeting and the psychological dimensions, the dramatic opportunities became obvious. The larger than life characters involved, including Brian Epstein and Colonel Tom Parker, all set against a backdrop of corrupt American politics and the disastrous war in Vietnam, made for a strange and compelling narrative.
"The piece that has emerged is a kind of fake documentary. Elvis's life was an American Tragedy and the seeds of it are sown here in this meeting between the King and the pretenders to the throne. The Beatles were so young, bewildered and overwhelmed by their rapid rise to fame. In writing this drama I went back my old Beatles records and I became a Beatles fan, all over again."

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 2nd June 2023
Brian Epstein, 29 year old manager of the Beatles talks about his life to Bill Grundy.
He was a quiet, well-spoken public schoolboy, RADA student, from a very comfortably-off Liverpool family.
But knowing nothing of the world of pop - how did Epstein find himself in the world of agents and impresarios?
As well as the Beatles, he represented other artistes including Cilla Black.
Brian Epstein tragically died in 1967 aged 32 - the result of an alcohol and barbiturate overdose.
Launched in 1952, Frankly Speaking was a completely novel and ground breaking BBC series. Initially there were three interviewers and the series was both unrehearsed and unscripted.

A POINT OF VIEW - BEATLE TIME (320kbs-m4a/22mb/9mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 1st June 2023
"There is something eerie, fated, cosmic about the Beatles" writes Adam Gopnik, writer for The New York Times. "They appear in public as a unit on August 22nd 1962 and disappear as a unit, Mary Poppins like, exactly seven years later".
In this talk, he ponders exactly what it is that makes their music endure.
Why is it, he asks, that one of the things people never say is "I don't like the Beatles".
For his children, he says, "the Beatles are as uncontroversial as the moon. Just there, shining on".
To underline how strange this is, he points out that had the same thing been true for his generation, then the pop music of his childhood would have dated from before the First World War. And that, he says "would have been more than bizarre".
Gopnik concludes that the reason their music lasts is that it was a perfect collaboration of opposites.
Producer: Adele Armstrong
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 2012.
GREAT LIVES: SERIES 22 - 1. JOHN LENNON (320kbs-m4a/63mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 1st June 2023
Journalist John Harris, author of influential books on music, politics and popular culture, was born just as the Beatles were splitting up, and was only 11 when John Lennon died. Yet Lennon's mischievous anti-establishment position - and the richness of his lyrics and music - makes him Harris's nomination for a Great Life.
Matthew Parris tries to define what it is that makes this enigmatic, often difficult figure an inspiring subject for reflection.
The expert witness is Barry Miles, in whose London gallery John first met Yoko in the mid 1960s.
Produced by Christine Hall.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in August 2010.
*** Broadcast as part of 4 Extra's Fab 4 season marking the 60th anniversary of the Beatles first universal chart number 1, From Me To You, in May 1963.

BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast: 22nd May 2023
James Naughtie examines the lives and impact of the men and women who have given the second Elizabethan age its character.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney were two young men from Liverpool whose dazzling talent created first a band, then a cultural phenomenon and finally became a short hand for vast social change.
The New Elizabethans have been chosen by a panel of leading historians, chaired by Lord (Tony) Hall, Chief Executive of London's Royal Opera House. The panellists were Dominic Sandbrook, Bamber Gascoigne, Sally Alexander, Jonathan Agar, Maria Misra and Sir Max Hastings.
They were asked to choose: "Men and women whose actions during the reign of Elizabeth II have had a significant impact on lives in these islands and/or given the age its character, for better or worse."
Producer: James Cook.

GEORGE HARRISON: WHAT IS LIFE (320kbs-m4a/137mb/60mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 23rd February 2023
Michael Palin presents a tribute to his friend George Harrison, who died in November 2001. It features archive interviews with George, as well as contributions from his wife and son, Bob Geldof, Jim Keltner, Jeff Lynne, Brian May, Gary Moore, Tom Petty, Ringo Starr, Ravi Shankar and the Beatles' producer George Martin.
The programme highlights George's contribution to the extraordinary and enduring legacy of the Beatles. Although John or Paul would usually sing the lead vocal, George played a vital role in the distinctive harmonies that enhanced the Beatles' records. Guitarist Gary Moore demonstrates the brilliance of George's solos on their records. And Ravi Shankar talks about how George's love for Indian music and culture influenced Beatles records.
After the Beatles split in 1970, all four released solo records but - to the astonishment of many - it was George who initially achieved the most commercial and critical success. His single My Sweet Lord was a worldwide number one in 1971 and returned to the top of the UK chart in 2002. He organised the Concert for Bangladesh and the triple album of the recordings topped charts around the world. This event, and George Harrison's understanding of the power and responsibility that rock musicians could wield in the world, have had a lasting influence.
George's solo career had periods of great productivity and also two phases when his profile dipped below the horizon. He enjoyed a late 1980s 'comeback' with his hit album Cloud Nine, released the number one single Got My Mind Set On You and two albums with his supergroup The Traveling Wilburys (featuring Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty). The year after George died Brainwashed was released, which featured the music he had worked on since his last solo album in 1987. Among them was the beautiful instrumental Marwa Blues, which won a Grammy Award.
First broadcast on Radio 2 in 2009.
