It's Halloween, everyone's entitled to one good scare...

Prepare for a mixtape from the master of horror, John Carpenter. Known as the Prince of Darkness, Carpenter is one of the most celebrated directors and composers of the horror genre, the man behind the Halloween series, The Thing and The Fog among many others.

BONJO IYABINGHI NOAH AND GAIKA - LATE JUNCTION SESSION (320kbs-m4a/29mins/67mb)

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 4th August 2023

Verity Sharp shares the sounds of our latest exclusive collaboration session - a musical meeting of minds between vocalist and producer GAIKA and master percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah of the dub ensemble African Head Charge.

GAIKA is an artist once described as 'Britain's most vital rapper'. His sound is wide-ranging and sometimes cinematic, combining elements of grime, dancehall, R&B, electronic and soundscape, with lyrics that often reflect social issues and the causes he champions. His latest album Drift will be released in September, and is an experimental ensemble work of ‘nostalgic escapism’ made alongside collaborators including Bbymutha and Kidä.

Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah is a master percussionist and frontman for the psychedelic dub ensemble African Head Charge, which he formed in 1981. Bonjo started in the 1970s as a session hand percussionist with artists like Desmond Dekker, before meeting the producer Adrian Sherwood, his collaborator of more than forty years. Their new album A Trip To Bolgatanga is their first release in twelve years, and takes the form of a musical journey to Bonjo's current hometown in north Ghana.

James Acaster - Late Junction Mixtape

JAMES ACASTER - LATE JUNCTION MIXTAPE 19.05.23 (320kbs-m4a/63mb/27mins)

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 19th May 2023

Verity Sharp shares a mixtape from stand-up comedian, record producer and head honcho behind the 40-strong international music collective Temps, James Acaster. As a child, Acaster grew up "obsessed with wanting to record an album one day" before pursuing a career as a stand-up comedian. The opportunity to revisit that desire arose during the first UK lockdown, when he found himself sitting on a wealth of drum tracks recorded on his childhood kit, material initially conceived as being part of a would-be mockumentary about a naive comedian-turned-musician. Stuck at home, the project morphed, and Acaster enlisted the help of some of his favourite artists - including drummer Seb Rochford and vocalists Xenia Rubinos and Quelle Chris - to realise the record. The resulting album, PARTY GATOR PURGATORY (named after a human-sized toy alligator that Acaster won at a county fair when he was 7), disregards genres in favour of experimentalism, packing all his favourite sounds into a singular melting pot of ideas. For his Late Junction mixtape, James Acaster picks out tracks from the likes of Brazilian vocalist Elza Soares, American singer-songwriter and guitarist Marnie Stern and experimental hip hop trio The Sooper Swag Project.

Shackleton & MC Yallah - Late Junction Session

SHACKLETON & MC YALLAH - LATE JUNCTION SESSION 04.11.22 (320kbs-m4a/65mb/25mins)

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 4th November 2022

Verity Sharp shares the results of our latest long-distance collaboration session, between enigmatic English producer Shackleton and Kenyan rapper MC Yallah.

Growing up amongst what he has described as the rugged and merciless landscapes of Northern England, Shackleton is a producer in his own lane, a purveyor of stark and uncompromising electronic rhythms and textures. Founder of record labels Skull Disco and Woe To The Septic Heart!, his music defies categorisation, drawing elements from the worlds of dubstep, techno and ambient, as well as musique concrète, Indonesian gamelan and Moroccan gnawa. Now based in Berlin, his latest EP, The Majestic Yes, builds on the rhythms of Senegalese sabar drum rhythms to craft a web of intricately layered musical explorations.

Kenyan rapper MC Yallah has been a formidable figure in the Ugandan hip hop scene since the 90s. An affiliate of the Nyege Nyege crew since its inception in 2013, her fierce and intense lyrics are drawn from real-life experiences and often address women's issues. Delivering her words in a range of languages including Kiswahili, Luganda, English and Luo, MC Yallah's artistry is shot through with integrity and self-determination.

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 26th August 2022

Ice cream vans, cricket matches and inflatable kayaks. Throughout the summer we've been exploring the outside world, with listeners sending in their self-made field recordings capturing the sounds of summer. To round off the season, Jennifer Lucy Allan shares a special mixtape from People Like Us aka Vicki Bennett, weaving these recordings into her own unique style of montage. Bennett sees sampling as folk art in the age of mechanical reproduction, with all of the sharing and cross-referencing incumbent to a populist form. Max Tundra - Late Junction Mixtape

MAX TUNDRA - LATE JUNCTION MIXTAPE 29.07.22 (320kbs-m4a/68mb/30mins)

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 29th July 2022

Jennifer Lucy Allan shares a mixtape from pioneering producer Max Tundra. Dismantling, reconfiguring, and exaggerating the sonic tropes of pop music, Max Tundra's avant-garde and maximalist aesthetic - heard across a trio of albums in the 2000s - paved the way for the explosion of hyperpop and label-collectives like PC Music. Tundra's playful commitment to piling sounds together began with what he describes as the "queasily irritating collection" of answerphone messages created for his parent's home phone in the 1980s (unsuspecting callers would be met with a barrage of samples, songs, silly noises and even a compelling story about an avocado stone.) And in the 2000s, carting "from house to house" the Commodore Amiga home computer system bought with his bar mitzvah money, Max Tundra began releasing music that sought to be "genre-free", initially employing "an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink multi-instrumental approach" before exploring a more synthetic sound as the decade progressed. On the eve of the release of new remixes of those seminal albums, Max offers up a Late Junction mixtape full of impossible vocals and wild pop abandon, including the "woozy electronic joy" of Vegyn, a song he wrote for Daphne & Celeste's comeback, and the reeling experimentation of NNAMDÏ.

BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 9th July 2021

Jennifer Lucy Allan serves up a tasty mixtape concocted by Japanese electronic producer Foodman aka Takahide Higuchi. Based in Nagoya in central Japan, his sound is influenced by everything from Chicago footwork and psych-rock to video game soundtracks and traditional Okinawan folk music. His new album Yasuragi Land is inspired by simple pleasures: eating at Michinoeki (motorway service stations) and visiting his local Sentō (public baths). For his Late Junction mixtape, he reflects on these places of calm, with music discovered at the very service stations and public baths he visits, as well as dynamic percussion from his mother's native Okinawa, some 90s video game music and the chimes of a music box.

Jennifer Lucy Allan presents a rare mix from the great Lee Ranaldo, who guides listeners through a lovingly compiled 30-minute collage of his favourite music and sounds. Expect free jazz, cut-up poetry, and wild vocal improvisations.

Following a stint in the electric guitar orchestra of Glenn Branca, Lee Ranaldo formed the experimental rock group Sonic Youth in 1981, alongside Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon. Thirty years later the founding trio decided to finally disband, having created multiple classic albums and influenced generations of musicians, composers, and creatives.

Since then, Lee Ranaldo has continued to release solo records, to produce for others, and to collaborate with a diverse bunch of interesting musicians. He also has an acclaimed visual art, sound art, and poetry practice. First and foremost though, Ranaldo will always be considered as one of the best guitarists of all time.

JOHN DORAN ON NEW WEIRD BRITAIN - LATE JUNCTION 30.05.19 (320kbs-m4a/206mb/1hr30mins)
BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 30th May 2019

Co-founder of The Quietus magazine John Doran has been travelling the length and breadth of the country in search of the musicians of New Weird Britain, an underground movement of music in the margins that favours one-off art happenings that are improvised, shocking and surreal. Artists of all stripes in Britain have been driven out of city centres by soaring rent prices, hit hard by cuts in arts funding and dwindling revenues from the digital economy. But untethered from the prospect of making any money and fueled by the current political crisis, a band of musicians are splintering away from convention to stage unrepeatable performances that stand in diametric opposition to austerity.

Ahead of his four-part Radio 4 series on the subject, John talks Max Reinhardt through the bands he discovered on his trip and the heritage of British esoteric music made in times of unrest.

Elsewhere Max plays music by CukoO, a musician based in the west country who makes organic dance music for school children, and languid psychedelia from Vanishing Twin’s latest album.

COSEY FANNI TUTTI - LATE JUNCTION MIXTAPE 29.05.19 (320kbs-m4a/66mb/28mins)
BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 29th May 2019

Max Reinhardt hosts, with an exclusive mixtape from legendary performance artist and avant-garde musician Cosey Fanni Tutti. She has a thirty-minute window in the programme to set the mood music, with selections including Coil, Gazelle Twin, and Jefferson Airplane.

Born in Hull in 1951, Cosey Fanni Tutti began her career there in 1969, appearing in art performances, mail art exhibitions, and musical improvisations. In the seventies she brought her experience of sex magazines and films, glamour modelling, and striptease into her performance art. Her infamous exhibition 'Prostitution' at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London, 1976 prompted walkouts and provoked debate in parliament. The same year, Cosey founded influential industrial music group Throbbing Gristle with Genesis P-Orridge, Peter Christopherson and Chris Carter, who is Cosey’s partner and lifetime collaborator.

Cosey Fanni Tutti’s continuing individual art and music practice takes its place alongside her work with Carter, the enduring, evolving legacy of Throbbing Gristle.

HELENA HAUFF - LATE JUNCTION MIXTAPE 03.01.19 (320kbs-m4a/63mb/27mins)
BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 3rd January 2019

Max Reinhardt presents a pulsing, genre-splicing mixtape from Hamburg techno legend, the musician and DJ Helena Hauff.

An expert in the art of the mix, Helena became obsessed with DJing in her teens after a particularly life-changing night at a techno club, and soon became a resident at Hamburg’s notorious basement bar the Golden Pudel. Alongside her mixing, she began to make live tracks with vintage synths and drum machines.

It was there that she met Darren Cunningham aka Actress, and through him released her first EP on Ninja Tune in 2013. Two years later, she released her debut full-length album, Discreet Desires, named one of Rolling Stones magazine’s top 20 electronic albums of that year. Her latest release Qualm was unapologetically raw, described by her as the product of “trying to create something powerful without using too many instruments and layers”.

Over the past five years, she’s become one of the most sought after and respected selectors, touring the world with expertly curated DJ sets spanning acid, electro, EBM, techno and post punk and headlining festivals like Sonar and Dekmantel.

Helena’s mixtape reflects her love of crate digging, from ‘70s library music and Yusef Lateef to psychedelic stoner rock and Meredith Monk, and of course a good dose of techno and leftfield electro.

THOM YORKE - LATE JUNCTION MIXTAPE 08.11.18 (320kbs-m4a/69mb/30mins)
BBC Radio 3 broadcast: 8th November 2018

Composer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Thom Yorke compiles a mixtape.

Yorke made his name in alternative-rock band Radiohead in the 1990s. Their electronic forays became increasingly experimental in the early 2000s, and Yorke has continued to work with electronic textures as a solo artist and collaborator with the likes of Four Tet and Flying Lotus. He composes for film and theatre, and his first feature-film soundtrack is released this autumn.

Yorke’s mixtape reflects his immersion in electronic music across the generations, from Pierre Henry through Aphex Twin to Mars89, as well as his love of experimental vocal techniques, mixing in a classic work by Stockhausen, and krautrockers Faust.

Max is joined by record collector, DJ and broadcaster Jonny Trunk who reports back on his trip to meet a fellow collector Lucy Woodward, owner of 17,000 vinyl records. Alongside everything from rare early music recordings to obscure library music releases, Lucy's specialist area is transmission discs, the music that accompanied the test card screen on your television in the days before 24 hour broadcasts. Jonny delves into the mind of the collector asking where the interest comes from, how to shop for rare records and why a complete set is so satisfying.

Donning his best beret, Max celebrates two icons of French chanson Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf, and there's afrocentric grooves from alt-keyboard player Jessica Lauren.
