Archive On 4: Stevie's Inner Visions

ARCHIVE ON 4: STEVIE'S INNER VISIONS (320kbs-m4a/130mb/57mins)

BBC Radio 4 broadcast: 3rd December 2023

Fifty years ago, Stevie Wonder released his finest masterpiece in a career full of them. Innervisions is regularly voted as one of the top ten LPs of all time, of any genre. Days after its release, Stevie - still just 23 years old - was on the promo tour in North Carolina. He sat in the passenger seat of a rental car listening to his new record on headphones when he drifted asleep. Suddenly the automobile collided with a truck, plunging Stevie into a coma.

This is the story of the day we almost lost Stevie, just at the moment when America – and the world - needed him most. It's also the account of how that iconic body of work, Innervisions, bridged Stevie's transition from child star to voice of the people, cementing his place as one the greatest of all time.

This Archive On 4 is told through Stevie's own words from the BBC vaults. It also features new interviews with musicians Corinne Bailey Rae, Jacob Collier, and Fred Hersch, as well as members of Stevie's Wonderlove band and crew, including his publicist Ira Tucker Jr, who spent days trying to bring his friend back to consciousness.

Sam Redmore - Stevie Wonder Mix

SAM REDMORE - STEVIE WONDER MIX (320kbs-m4a/132mb/58mins)
BBC Radio 6 Music broadcast: 9th May 2020

This weekend The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show will be celebrating Stevie Wonder's 70th Birthday, with an hour-long mix from producer and DJ Sam Redmore.

Stevie Wonder signed with Motown’s Tamla label at just 11 years old and 2 years later became the youngest artist to have a number 1 record on the American Billboard chart. While performing as a Motown act, he also wrote for other artists, penning the classic ‘Tears of A Clown’ for Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. Hardly a week goes by without us playing something Stevie has written, performed, produced or inspired. Throughout his stellar career, Stevie has worked with the ‘who’s who’ of musicians, from Chaka Khan to Snoop Dogg.

Producing tonight’s hour-long Stevie Wonder mix, is the highly talented DJ Sam Redmore. When Sam released his first remix in 2012 of Bob Marley’s “Is This Love”, we knew we had a serious talent on our hands. Since then, whether it’s a tropical re-rub of Sister Sledge or an afro rework of James Brown, Sam’s always brought the quality grooves. So sit back and enjoy this week's bumper edition of Wonder.
