Mego 50th Anniversary Joker, Green Lantern Hal Jordan, & Green Arrow

I've had these Mego figures on ice for at least 7 months now, Green Lantern maybe longer- but since I just posted on the Big Lots Exclusive Mego Superman, Batman, & Robin, I thought I'd circle back to show you these. Another wave of Mego DC Superheroes I preordered is due to drop in February, so I might as well keep it going! Check out the video:

Below, Mego 50th Anniversary Green Arrow with my Figures Toy Company 8in. Green Arrow
which was basically a Mego reissue that doesn't feel quite as sturdy as the 50th GA ...

Green Lantern wasn't part of the original Mego World's Greatest Heroes lineup back in the '70s, but the character has received more love here in the 21st Century. Below, 50th Anniversary Mego Green Lantern Hal Jordan with my 14" Mego Green Lantern Hal Jordan and 8" Green Lantern John Stewart ...

Below Mego Green Lantern & Green Arrow with my Mattel Retro-Action Green Lantern & Green Arrow, which have been in my collection for twelve years. This line was one of several over the years that appealed to Gen-X kids like me that had 8" Mego figures- I have several in my collection that I treasure to this day, carded and loose.

I love the Green Arrow and Green Lantern, but there is a particular charm to the original Mego Joker- that face sculpt/deco and outfit are iconic in the history of action figures, if I dare say, and a childhood favorite of mine and countless others!

Below, Mego 50th Anniversary Joker with Figures Toy Co. 18" Joker

Below, Mego Hal Jordan and Green Arrow with my new Big Lots variant Superman, Batman, and Robin with some of the Mego 50th Anniversary World's Greatest Superheroes reissues. Mego had so much to do with my love of superhero comics and action figures back in the '70s, so having Mego reappear back in 2018 and revive the World's Greatest Super-Heroes line has been fun!

These are fantastic additions to my Mego Collection! Be sure to check out the Mego Museum online and take a trip back to the halcyon days of Mego and the World's Greatest Superheroes!

Brave & The Bold Happy Meal Premiums

I have many of the Batman: The Brave and The Bold line, styled after the animated show that aired on Cartoon Network from 2008 -2011. It had been awhile since I posted on my collection of these, but I had started picking up loose figures recently, including some of these McDonald's Happy Meal premiums. There were smaller figures without articulation offered, and larger figures with action features released in another, separate wave. I've posted on two other Brave and The Bold fast-food premiums in the past, Blue Beetle and Plastic Man- both of which were super fun!

I loved how the show stylized Green Arrow in his Silver-Age outfit, with red boots and gloves- in April I posted on the 9" Green Arrow that Hasbro produced in 1999 wearing that outfit, circle back and check him out:

Hasbro Silver Age Collection 9in. Green Arrow (1999)

I've had a few Hasbro 9" figures in my collection since starting this blog in 2010, so when I was presented with the chance to scoop up this Green Arrow for south of fourteen bucks, I bit. Figures of this scale that were produced in this era with soft goods outfits were certainly appealing to the now older Mego generation. I like the chunky, toyetic feel of these kinds of action figures, which actually had a little better articulation than the original 8" Mego figures. Hasbro gave most of their 9" figures hinged gripping hands, helping Green Arrow actually draw his bow.

Green Arrow came with the rather large base, which is cool with the DC logo but takes up a lot of space. The other 9" Hasbro figures I have didn't include a base- this accessory seems only to have been included with the DC Silver Age Collection figures.

My only other DC character that Hasbro produced in this scale is this Martian Manhunter...

I also have a few Marvel figures Hasbro produced in this style and scale:

And finally, 9" Hasbro Green Arrow with my 8" Figures Toy Co. Green Arrow, which is really just a replica of the original Mego Green Arrow. Mego, resurrected in 2018, will actually release this 8" Green Arrow again this year!

This Green Arrow is unique among the others in my collection because of his scale, and one of maybe only a couple examples of the character with red boots and gloves- most of the rest of my Green Arrow figures are monochromatic. There weren't a lot of characters produced by Hasbro in this scale, but I have enjoyed the few I've had and am always on the lookout for more if the price is right.

Figures Toy Company 8in. Green Arrow

I've owned maybe three Figures Toy Company figures, which is odd because of how much I loved Mego's World's Greatest Superheroes as a kid. This Figures Toy Company Green Arrow looks a lot like it's '70s counterpart, complete with his green Mego boots. I purchased him on the secondary market, advertised as "new in factory bag". My sample looks fantastic, only a somewhat loose right knee to complain about.

While going through more than one Batman and Superman, I never had a Mego Green Arrow as a child, making this a fun grab for me. I don't remember knowing Green Arrow as a character distinctly then, learning far more about him reading comics as an adult, as with many DC characters. Millionaire businessman Oliver Queen does draw comparisons to Bruce Wayne/Batman, but has his own flair...

GA's shoulder straps on his fence of arrows are clunky and his belt doesn't tab well, but he holds his bow nicely, and his soft rubber cape stretches over his head in a nice way. I'm not sure if the original GA had any of these problems but doubt I would have noticed as a child. Still, mine displays well enough- a really nice-looking figure.

Below, 8" Figures Toy Company GA with my 8" Mattel Retro-Action GA. That Mattel line really sparked my nostalgia for my Mego figures of the '70s and sparked my interest in action figure collecting back in 2010 when I started this blog.

And below, 8" Figures Toy Company and Mattel Retro-Action 8" Green Arrows with my 6" DC Universe Classics Green Arrow, my 10" and 4" JLU Green Arrows, and my 13" DC Direct Green Arrow. Not all my GA figures, but a greater portion of!

ReAction Arrow 3.75" Figures

I picked up a few of these 2015 WB Arrow figures on the secondary market; as child of the '70s, I had many 3.75" Star Wars figures, and enjoy the retro-appeal of small, simple figures like that. I never watched a single episode of Arrow- surprising in that I like Green Arrow from the comics. I like the sculpt on these, and would have loved them as a kid.

These come with appropriate accessories, two bows for Arrow, and a sheath for Deathstroke's sword on his back. Black Canary has somewhat loose arm swivels, but I like them overall. I've bought several of the new Hasbro 3.75" Retro Marvel Legends figures at ten bucks each, which is a better value than Super 7's recent $16. - $18. ReAction figures. While I enjoy the sculpt and deco on these figures, I'm less likely to pay that price.

DC Direct Brightest Day Green Arrow

Continuing from my last post with another DC Direct Brightest Day figure, Series 1 Green Arrow! I've had this figure on card in my collection since the summer of 2011, less than a year into publishing this blog, and obsessed with DC Direct action figures. They were more delicate then the DC Universe Classics I was also buying, but the sculpts were more unique and the paint was more nuanced. DC Direct often designed the characters after their interpretations within particular stories in the comics. While I've yet to read Brightest Day ( I just found all three books at great prices used), I loved the hooded costume of this figure, a somewhat new look for the decades old DC Comics hero at the time, if memory serves me correctly.

I really like that you can display Green Arrow without his hood, and that the loose arrows he comes with can be stowed in the quiver on his back. There have been some really cool Green Arrow figures, but his one may be nearly perfect, due in large part to the comic-accurate portrait. But the remaining sculpt throughout cannot be ignored, from the fabric folds in his tunic, pouches around the utility belt, and darts on the inside of his gauntlets. Ollie also gets points for little details like the painted bow handle and arrows, and real bowstring. I also love the subtle metallic tint of his boots and gauntlets- Exceptional!

Like most of the DC Direct figures of this era, Green Arrow lacks the articulation of a lot of recent action figures, though many critical reviews in his time praised him in this department- DC Direct had made strides forward in this regard, though still behind the DCUC figures at the beginning of the decade. Whatever he lacks in articulation is more than made up for in aesthetics, however, and made Green Arrow a standout among an already beautiful line of action figures that the Brightest Day series was. Most all of them have increased in value, Green Arrow much higher than most on the secondary market, over eight years after his release.

DC Direct New Frontier Green Arrow Revisited

While moving recently, I rediscovered my DC Direct New Frontier Green Arrow, beautifully sculpted to emulate the late Darwyn Cooke's art in his retro-Atomic Age masterpiece. As painfully fragile as a lit of Green Arrow action figures with small parts are, this was still a beautiful piece from what in retrospect seems to have been a special era of action figure production, bringing long marginalized characters to the forefront, comic art-inspired lines from companies like DC Direct, and huge collections like MOTU, the revival of Marvel Legends, a new Masters of the Universe line, and much more. The new Golden -Age of Action Figures, as Canadian Kal calls it. I started this blog nearly seven years ago in the midst of that special time, long ago enough to look back fondly upon it   :)

Batman Unlimited Series 1 Mighty Minis

I couldn't resist some more of these DC Mighty Minis! Perhaps it's the challenge of photographing these impossibly tiny 2" figures. I like their sculpt and stance, and they'll be fun to pose with other toys!

Mighty Minis Green Arrow:

Aside from Green Arrow being unarmed, I'm glad I went back for these- I'm particulary fond of the Batman Beyond's semi-translucent plastic. At $2.99, I paid less that the first few Mighty Minis I purchased- perhaps still a questionable value, but improved.
