Thor Ragnarok Gladiator Hulk BAF

As much as I admired the recent Thor Ragnarok Marvel Legends Series, I was mostly interested in this Gladiator Hulk BAF, and I'm in the midst of unloading a lot of my action figure collection. I just don't need all the extra figures, and as much as I paid for him, I still saved a lot of money buying Hulk on the secondary market. His articulation is hindered by his bulk and armor but he can do enough for me, and the sculpt and paint are a high mark for Hasbro Marvel Legends. Check out the video:

I picked up a loose Gladiator Thor from another seller. which like many figures from the Legends Ragnarok Series, is also a great figure in his own right. Like Hulk, Thor has an asymmetrical design, great colors, and a super-detailed sculpt are admirable. The pegged cape likes to come undone when posing in extreme positions, and his swords are made of an easily bent, rubbery plastic, like Hulk's accessories. These issues aside, Thor is so artfully done otherwise, it's hard to complain.

In the video above are some comparison shots with other figures, including the 14.5" Marvel Legends Hulk I bought this summer, and Angela from the Guardians of the Galaxy Series, who makes a great companion to these two. I've heard some nitpicks regarding both these recent Hulk figures, but they are probably the best two we've ever had. Getting two Hulk figures this good in one year, along with a figure like Angela, seems to have set a new bar for Hasbro Marvel Legends, backed by several other great figures produced recently.

Rewind: Hasbro 3.75" Marvel

I've been having a great time revisiting some of my Hasbro 3.75" Marvel action figures, photographing them for my eBay store as I clear out some of my collection to make room for new interests. Pictured above is a Skrull Soldier from the 2012 Avengers line, which featured more realistic, movie based figures, as well as comic inspired renditions of favorite Marvel characters.  No, the Super-DuperToyBox isn't coming to an end anytime soon, but you can buy some of the items from my collection, several of which collectors from all over the continental United States have already snatched up. Also be sure to follow the Super-DuperToyBox on Instagram, where I will post some of the action figures going up for sale as I list them!

Also for sale on my eBay store are all my Hasbro 3.75" Thor Movie action figures from 2011, including this very cool Hammer Smash Thor. This line had particularly great sculpt detail, paint, and character likeness for such small figures. Wonderful!

Hot Toys 1:6 Scale Dark World Thor

What can I say? I'm continually impressed by Hot Toys' incredible realism and attention to detail in their figure's outfits. This Dark World Thor is my fourth, and a stunning example of how great these 1:6 scale figures are. The body armor, diecast Mjolnir hammer, and luxurious cloth cape reinforce the impressive minutiae of actor Chris Hemsworth's likeness in this amazing model. Check out my video for dozens of more pictures and a trip on the turntable with this truly epic action figure...

Thor MiniMates: Lady Sif & Volstagg

A quick trip back to my MiniMates fascination: I picked up this 2-pack on clearance awhile back at TRU on account of the damaged package. I loved the armor designs in the 2011 feature film, which was somewhat panned by fanboys and critics alike (and for good reasons), but I was entertained  :D

MiniMates Sif  here doesn't bring actress Jaimie Alexander to mind. Shouldn't she have a ponytail? Maybe not in this particular outfit? At any rate, Jaimie is a ravishingly beautiful woman, and this is a pretty good MiniMate. The deco and colors are nice, and the uniquely sculpted wristbands are cool. She also has a nice range of motion in her limbs, which not all MiniMates enjoy, and her sword is beautifully sculpted & painted. There was also a SDCC Thor "Stormbreaker" set released that included a more comic book inspired Sif with a winged red helmet that totally rules, but this Sif is not without merit, and is probably the more sophisticated version.

While I was pleasantly surprised with Thor's scorned lover, but I really bought this set for his other companion Volstagg of the Warriors Three. Don't get me wrong- I am a fan of heroic and powerful women, but Thor's bumbling and boisterous brother at arms has some cool armor and a beard...!

I like the whole reddish brown thing going on here, and the copper abdominal armor is nice. There's a lot of paint apps on this guy, and some detailed sculpts- this is a well done MiniMate. His head won't turn and he's somewhat encumbered by the big armor overlay, but he has a wide footing stance. And another great accessory in this 2-pack, Volstagg's battle axe is as nicely detailed as his armor. Really cool!

Hasbro also did a great job on their 3 3/4" Thor movie figures, the Volstagg from that line a ridiculously detailed, and perfectly executed action figure. This is a perfect opportunity for a round of BIGTOY/littletoy   :D

MiniMates Volstagg and Sif with the Armored Thor that came in a 2-pack with Beta Ray Bill, a set that totally got me into MiniMates...

6" Lord of Asgard Thor & Loki

I guess these aren't labeled as "Marvel Legends" action figures, but they are the herald of the famed line's return. When I checked last week they had the Capt. America, Nick Fury, Movie Thof, & Loki, but not the Lord of Asgard Thor- the one I was really after. JBoy felt they were shortpacked, and I think he was correct, as upon my return I found only one on the peg.  And if they are shortpacked, that they are Wal-Mart exclusives as well makes him even more of a find- that said, I've seen him in Legends packaging online (Blob BAF Series- 2007), but am unsure exactly when that's gonna drop, and the colors didn't look this good. I wasn't going to buy Loki unless I found the Lord of Asgard, but I got lucky!

This figure is modeled after the Thunder God's depiction in the Thor: Lord of Asgard storyline, where in the wake of Odin's heroic self-sacrifice, Thor is called upon to fulfill his father's legacy as lord and master of the Eternal Realm. While I've not yet read this, this supercharged version of Thor would appeal to any fan of the Norse hero! I mean, just look at him....  Damn! The exaggerated sculpt and dark colors look great on this guy. I'm a big fan of the helmet and ribbed boots, and his oversized battle axe and Mjolnir hammer are nicely detailed as well.

Thor is bulky, hence his articulation is pretty limited: his shoulder armor gets in the way of any over-the-head action, and his long hair keep his head in mostly one position. He has an abdominal crunch joint, but it doesn't do anything really acrobatic. Due to the bulge of his biceps, Thor can't do much of a curl, and when the forearm is brought in, a protruding tab of plastic is exposed at the elbow, unattractively separated from the remaining arm sculpt. Not so great there. His waist moves 360 degrees, as do his hands & feet, both of which feature a hinge as well. The double-jointed knees on mine were really cranky, but the swivels at the the top of his thighs were easily rotated. He kinda leans forward & down due to the weight of that huge cape and head placement, the latter of which I mentioned previously having being limited because of his molded, golden locks.

While on the subject, Thor's removeable cape is really something- it has a heavy fabric surface texture, "fur-lined" sculpted collar, and is nicely shaded. If removed, one can see the peg holes where it attaches to his shoulders- not a problem for me as I'll display him robed, though I had perpetual issues getting the thing back on to stay, a problem I had with some of the 3 3/4" movie Thor figures as well. I seem to have it reattached pretty securely now.

Lord of Asgard Thor and my Savage Frost Giant both have a lot in common really: they are both large, have an abdominal crunch joint, include a detailed accessory axe, and have sculpted fur on their outfit...

In spite of my critical eye, I proclaim this action figure BITCHIN': the colors, paint and sculpt are really cool. I love the helmet! I also like dig the details in his strapped boots, which are mimicked in raised, gold rectangles up the sides of his thighs. The belt has some nice detail, as does the chest armor, which has a subtle metallic paint application on the chain mail. He has his problems, which include distribution, somewhat plastic-y skin tone on his arms, and stiff neck, but at fifteen bucks he's a good value.

Lord of Asgard Thor with 3 3/4" Marvel Universe Avengers Thor and 9" ToyBiz Famous Covers Thor:

As tough as the competition was with his half-brother, this comic series Loki holds his own with a great sculpt and color. Like Thor, his shoulder joints are restricted by sculpted fur, though Loki has double-jointed elbows and his hinged wrists aren't hindered by wristbands, making his hands more expressive. His body, legs, & feet appear to be reused from an earlier Legends Doc Sampson I have, the scuplt of his t-shirt collar remaining. His abdominal joint is superior to Thor's, being a ball-hinge/swivel combo as opposed to one big hinge. While Thor enjoys a cut waist joint, Loki doesn't need one with the more expressive abdominal joint.

Loki lacks the detail that Thor's torso is decorated with, but the gold brads in his gauntlets & loincloth offset his plain body, which has a dark wash that's subtle. His left leg strap around the thigh would have been appreciated more thoroughly if Hasbro would've included a sheathed sword or dagger!

Great oppurtunity for BIG TOY/little toy! 6" Loki with 3 3/4" Marvel Universe Loki:

These two make a fun pair! I don't have a ton of Marvel Legends figures, like I do Mattel DCUCs, which I generally consider superior. I've read people more experienced claiming the earlier ToyBiz Legends were better than when Hasbro took over the line. I have some unopened ToyBiz Legends, but only a couple I've opened- one being my First Appearance Hulk. If I had to judge only by him, I'd say that is true- his articulation is incredible, as are his looks. That said, Thor & Loki are cool, and that Hulk is just an amazing action figure & tough competition for any who stand beside him. Below: Daredevil, First Appearance Spider-Man, First Appearance Hulk, Doc Sampson, Black Bolt, Lord of Asgard Thor, & comic series Loki (all are Hasbro, save Hulk & Spidey).

The Asgardians Vs. The Frost Giants!

The Warriors Three arrived with Battle Hammer Thor just in time:  my very territorial clutch of Frost Giants first ruthlessly attacked Captain Cold, then stupidly jumped Thanos, who thumped 'em only 2 weeks later.  Let's just say that when Thor & Friends arrived, there was instantly a fight!

Well that might've done the trick! I didn't expect those Frost Giants to cause so much trouble when I went crazy & bought four of them, but I did know they'd be a lot of FUN  :D
