KC blog day 5 - Location, Location, Location

Where do you like to indulge in your craft? Is your favourite arm chair your little knitting cubby area, or do you prefer to ‘knit in public’? Do you liek to crochet in the great outdoors, perhaps, or knit in the bath, or at the pub?

I tend to knit and crochet anywhere. Knitting is good to carry around, especially circular needles as they take less space than the very long straight needles. And it's more discreet to knit with them in public, less dangerous for the person sitting next to you. At home I just knit in front of the telly.

I even manage to make amigurumis on the go. I make little skeins of yarn so I have different colours, my notebook to write my pattern, a set of needles and such, and there I go !

----------------------------------------

Emplacement, emplacement, emplacement

KC blog day 4 - A New Skill

Is there a skill related to your hobby that you hope to learn one day? maybe you’re a crocheter who’d also like to knit? Maybe you’d like to learn to knit continental, knit backwards, try cables or attempt stranded colourwork.

I think one day I will have to try lace knitting. Maybe try to make doillies? And also more sophisticated toys... Even if crochet amigurumis are fun to make !!!

I don't see the need to learn to knit continental, my method is good enough. And colourwork will come soon enough too...

------------------------------

KC blog day 3 - One Great Knitter

Write about a knitter whose work (whether because of project choice, photography, styling, scale of projects, stash, etc) you enjoy. If they have an enjoyable blog, you might find it a good opportunity to send a smile their way.

I'm new to knitting, and so I mostly go to free patterns sites, or Ravelry, and I haven't filled my Google Reader with great knitter bloggers yet. But I will mention Kucki, whose blog I follow since a very long time, as she's also a stitcher. I think that seeing all her lovely socks and hats influenced me to knit as well.

Otherwise, my mom and DBF mom are great knitters, so I don't need the web to get influenced.

---------------------------------

KC blog day 2 - An Inspirational Pattern

Blog about a pattern or project which you aspire to. Whether it happens to be because the skills needed are ones which you have not yet acquired, or just because it seems like a huge undertaking of time and dedication, most people feel they still have something to aspire to in their craft. If you don’t feel like you have any left of the mountain of learning yet to climb, say so!

One day, I will try to knit socks. It seems so complex, with the toes and the gusset, and using dpns.... For the moment, I knit other stuff, and as nobody need socks, it will be for later !!!!

--------------------------------

Awarded to make somebody's day...

Pink Canary just awarded me with this "You make my day" award. I love reading blogs, even if I'm not the best commenter in the world. Sometimes I just have time to skip from one blog to the next on my Bloglines, but also sometimes I can't find anything to say that hasn't been said before, so I remain silent.
Like many of us, many bloggers "make my day". You can see the links all over my blog page. If there's a blog I like to visit, I subscribe to it in my Bloglines, and I go as soon as there's an update.
But I want to play by the rules, so I will also nominate 10 people. I chose my friends, obviously, and tried to nominate people who haven't been nominated yet (which eliminated Pink Canary from the list, even if she should be on there ;)
Nominees please carry this forward by choosing 10 blogs to nominate, and tell the people in a comment on their blog.

-----------------------------------------------------------

2 things...

First, I forgot to say yesterday that I introduced the French speaking blogs I read, in the left sidebar (it's there just because the right sidebar is a bit crowded, that way it's a bit more equilibrated). Blogs in the sidebars are my Bloglines reads. So it means that these days loads get added. I dunno if it's really useful to you as visitors or not.

Second, I'd like to draw your attention to the first discussion on my website. I'll try to add some as I get inspired. It is supposed to be a nice big debate, so join in !

----------------------------------

The finishes display

First, here is my Valentine's heart project. I finished it last Sunday (see post here). I thought it would be fun to display it on a heart.

So I found heart shapes on the net, and started cutting and sewing.

I then crocheted the lace you see around it in pink thread. This step took all week, because it was quite a long piece of lace !!!

Note that everything is sewn by hand this time, for precise finition.

-------------------

On Monday I bought a frame for School of Needlework from Hobbycraft. I chose a brown that was close to the browns in the design.

I still need to choose a place where to display it in my house !

----------------------

Now for the general blabbing...

You might have noticed the banner at the top of the page inviting you to visit my newly revamped website.

In the past few days, I managed not only to add daily news, but I also decided to share my "Coup de coeur" (crush) of the day. Something that made me go "waouh" when I went through my daily surfing.

So I advice you to add the rss feed of my website so you can get all the latest infos !

I know it might be a bit confusing, it's like having 2 blogs, but the thing is I try to prepare for spam attack. If I can do without comments on neutral stuff on my website, it would be annoying to loose advantages on the blog.

In a perfect world, the web traffic wouldn't be swamped with spam, my blog and website would still be in their original place, and we would be a lot happier ;)

Petra, it's so good to see you back ! You're right about Margaret Sherry's cats: I now have a ginger and a grey blob on my fabric, and it's not really cat like ;)

Stitcherw, I guess that with practice, we recognise the cats even half finished !

As they are direct adaptations of watercolour drawings, I guess that's why the backstitching makes all the difference !

This week end, I intend to make some Valentine decorations. I've started early today by going food shopping at 8.30am, even before breakfast (which I took over there). It's such a nice change from last week: nobody there. It's amazing to think that just a few hours later the car park is so packed you need 20 min to leave it !

First, I guess I would have to clean up a bit... it's not really inspiring to have stash all over the house !!!

------------------------------------

AngelSan Creation, the new website

These past days I spent some time redesigning my website... You can now have a look and tell me what you think, if there are bugs or whatever...

Perso, email and language note

First, in English... note that I sometimes don't say the same thing in French and English... so it might be worth reading both sometimes if you know both languages.

Also, it seems that blogger doesn't keep people emails, so if you want me to reply to comments by email, you will have to give me your adress. Other wise I will answer on the blog.

-------------------------------

Let's try something...

As I felt more and more drawn to French blogs, I also felt the language barrier. French people would come here, only watch the pictures, and not read... not fair.
So I had the idea of creating a blog to wite in French, in parallel to this one (that's the content of the message in french, below).

But then people commented, and maybe it would be best to have both English and French in here. Less work. So that's what I'm trying to do in the previous message. Of course, the lenght of the 2 might be different, and I might not say exactly the same thing, but... you get the idea.

(to French people)

Pine Tree Hill finish

Yes, no wip pictures for this piece, as I stitched it in 2 evenings. It's a little piece from Little House Needleworks.

I wanted to do something small as I was expecting my 123 Stitch order, and it arrived yesterday indeed !

I started the Gingerbread house this morning. I know some of the LHN yahoo group have already finished this SAL, but... I know others have just started, so...

This Pine Tree Hill will be turned into a cushion for the mantel piece, probably this week end...

I added a new feature to this blog: a slideshow of my recent finishes on the right hand side... I think it's rather neat, don't you ?

Last wip of Simply Snowdays

What happens when you stitch something so long it doesn't fit the A4 size scanner, and you're on a grey windy day in the UK? Sub-optimal pictures.

Yesterday I was a bit on the down side, so I didn't stitch much, but I hope to be finished with this project by tonight. I just have white/3865 patches, and a little of backstitching.

It's funny to see how in certain lights white and 3865 are identical, but in others 3865 is a bit creamy. There is also a sort of "texture" difference". 3865 is more visible and dense on this cloudy blue fabric than white.

I will turn this into a banner of some sort, so I can display it on the mantel piece.

The next project... I don't know. I dug up some Sanman Originals snowmen patterns, but also some freebies, and there are still the ornaments in mind. I feel a bit frustrated because I'm still waiting for my order from 123 Stitch, which includes 2 winter projects from CCN and LHN. What blocks the process is the Gingerbread Cottage pattern that is back ordered.

Does that sound familiar, Jenn? I think american companies just wait until the whole order is there to send it, while British companies send stuff one by one if necessary. There seem to be a difference in postage policies, as int h US they charge you a lot, and in the UK you get low or free postage.

I just hope to get my order before Dec 20th, so I can stitch that over the holidays, that would be great !!!

The "in and out" feed is fun. I would have never have guessed I had visitors from so many countries !!!

Sue, Blogline is what they call a feed aggregator. Blogs have an extra page called the rss feed, which is basically the posts of the blog in some special format that programs like Bloglines or Google reader can read and display on their site.

People get an account on these websites, and decide to "subscribe" to blogs. So instead of visiting each individual blog, they just go to Bloglines, and they have a list of blogs they read over there. You can see when a blog is updated so it's a real time saver !!!

You can click on the bloglines links on the right to see how it is...

Start of the week end !

A new week end arrives, the weather doesn't call you outside... and you have no obligation stuff to do. How does that sound?

Yesterday evening and this morning I made this little "humburg". I would call it a "berlingot". I'm used to see concentrated sweet milk packaged like that ;)

I followed this tutorial, but used Cindy Valentine's little gingerbread people from her sampler in The Gift of CrossStitching. I also added blue Rhodes diamonds. The surrounding is in 4210 red DMC variation, button hole stitches. The cord is from the same thread.

The red on the gingerbread people is red beads.

This is a first attempt, and next time I see I will have to focus on putting stuff under the gingerbread people.

Here is Simply Snowdays as we speak.

Now for a true story. The snowmen are calling for DMC 3865. I couldn't find any in Hobbycraft, but I ordered it along with other threads and fabric from Sew Discounted on Wednesday night.

Yesterday I got my order, but no DMC 3865 !!!! Apparently, a rarified colour... White with a creamy twist, but not quite cream like DMC712.

As you can see, the letters and most of the rest of the design is done, so I felt I had no choice but stop and do something else until I get DMC 3865.

But this morning, I got an enveloppe from Sew Discounted with the skein... I'm saved !!! I think that's why I like to order from Sew Discounted and Sew and So: they will dispatch what they have as soon as possible (if you order in the morning, you could get stuff the following day), even if the order isn't complete.

Now on to replying to comments...

June, I'm glad you liked your visit to Lille. I love that town, with the mix of new and old, and the convinience of transport and the atmosphere...

Anonymous (please sign your comments, name or nickname, otherwise I have to call you "Anonymous", it's a bit ridiculous;) ), even if people are attracted by my magazines reviews, well, though, I'm not going to buy magazines just so they know they can spend their money for something else ! I get no money from blogging and making the reviews. But magazines cost loads of money. Here in the UK it's nearly 4 pounds a magazine, Multiply by the number of magazines and issues... That's a lot of money I could use to by nice stash with, especially if no chart interest me in the mag !!!

So I will make reviews if I buy magazines. That's the reality of life, nothing's really free ;)

Alfine, you had a good point about checking Bloglines. This blog has 12 subscribers. But if you check the my old blog, there are 50. Now, why don't people change their subscription??? I give up

Now, blog wise, you might notice the feed on the left. I find it fun to see people coming in and out...
On the right I'v added a "Vote for me" button... I joined the Crafters blogs Top sites thing. Just for fun, really. I don't really have any hope of climbing in the top, but it's really up to you to click if you want ;)

Time for breakfast before sorting out my stitching stuff: I have threads, beads, fabric all over the living room, it's very uninspirational....

The comments game

This post isn't a rant. It's a general reflexion on life on the web. I don't want you to think I'm grumpy and ungrateful... Comments are parts of blogs, and I think it's an interesting subject of discussion, so please leave a comment to express your views.

I'm telling you, I'm feeling left out of the stitchers world at the moment, my blog seems to appear rarely on other blogs blogrolls, and I get fewer and fewer comments. Dunno what happened. Is it because I moved my blog? Someone suggested a while ago it was because I used to post everyday, then only a few times a week (when I moved) but now I post everyday again, but I still only get 3 comments a post. In comparison, some people post only like once every 2 months and get 10 comments in 12 hours.

As a scientist, I can't help but wonder what the mecanisms of the comments work. I know that I'd be fed up and lacking inspiration to comment on posts showing wips everyday. What can you say? "great progress!!!", "well done!!!", and this also goes for finished pieces, apparently. I'm the first to suffer from "I want to comment, but I can't find anything interesting to say other than "congratulations", and anyway someone had already wrote it".

So I'm trying to talk about other things that might get reactions. Obviously I fail in a spectacular way these days. But it's not like I have a fascinating life. I can't even tell you about the kids I don't have. So what should I talk about?

Talking about gardening and my life was a big bust.
Showing new finishings, personal patterns and personalisation of established designs didn't provoke much reaction either.
Making a tutorial? Didn't seem to touch anybody...

So what?

I suppose you have to factor in the fact that, like love, if you are looking for it, you don't get it. So no comments for me...

Now, visits wise... I see the blog move didn't affect the number of visitors. More than that, 50% of visitors arrive from the old blog. Meaning I should keep the old page as is...
But what is interesting is that comparing to last November (a year ago), I only have 3/4 of the visits I ihad back then. So... what changed?

Normally you should expect more and more visits on a website. So decrease is not normal. I know my website is well indexed in google, but people don't really reach me this way. Most visitors are returning ones, not coming from other blogs either.

So I feel disillusioned by the whole thing. I don't care about the number of visits. What I'm really looking for is contact with other stitchers. But in a way I feel there's nothing really new to talk about. I guess I'm not the only one feeling that...

Now it's your turn to express your views on the subject !!!

Beginning of a new area of the blog...

Ok, my blog has to move to Blogspot for good. When I saw my website has been disactivated because of spam, and the comments database has been delated, I thought it was very unfair. After all, I'm the victim of people programming robots to pollute my website, and I get punished? Of course, the server is a victim as well, and in order to run smoothly they have to take drastic mesures. Can't be mad at them. But I'm mad at the spammers.

I asked for reactivation of my website, and I will remove any automatic commenting system from there. Meaning my blog has to move to the emergency blogspot place. The design is a bit... hum... But we will moving to a more winter one soon, so... Not to mention that this happens of course when I have virtually no time to work on a design while DBF is there, and we have better things to do.

I'm not really surprised I have to make more changes, as I'm in a changing period. But it also helps to see what is important.

For exemple, what if I loose my website? Would I want to spend the time and effort to create a new one? What for?

Like many others, I feel a bit demotivated by blogging. I love comments, but I understand that if I only show pictures after pictures of stitching, it ends up to be quite the same over time. I don't even feel attracted to new techiniques that could add something to the blog.

One thing I find really useful for me on a personal level is the Gallery. So I know when I made what, and what thread conversions I made. So I hope to get that back.

But for the rest, it feels a bit presomptuous thinking updates are so interesting to people. Once I get my website back, I'll try and get most of the infos on it sorted. It will take time....

Wanderings of Monday morning

I plunged and got the beta version of Blogger... and got a fright when I thought they stripped this blog of design (on the day I spent an hour doing it), and content. But apparently they just created a new blog to correspond to my gmail adress. Useless.

I solved the mystery of the comments. On beta blogs, if you comment and you are asked for your google or blogger username and pass, you can only give your google ID.

I also noticed that my Links list was out of date, so for clarity of design, I report you to my Bloglines list, which is even more complete than my usual one.

Yesterday I started making Winter Wonderland into a cushion or quilt, when I realised I didn't feel like fighting against my sewing machine, and I'd rather leave my grandma do it. We'll have all Friday to do that...

After a search for my passport 2 weeks ago, my "on the go" pouch, it was my bright orange project folder to play hide and seek with me. But I won. Oh, and my brand new halogen lamp broke too, I had to change the bulb. Now I hope it will last longer ! Otherwise I will just buy a regular floor lamp !

I started Winter eve from Country Cottage Needleworks, on dark blue linen Lili sent me a few weeks ago. She has stitched this design on natural linen as intended, and she feels it's a bit mute. Plus everybody stitched this design on natural linen, so I wanted to change.

Sunday, 17 December 2006

Site down, Winter Wonderland finished

Ok. Since yesterday during the day, I have no access to my regular website, and I suppose you too. And it's a real annoyance, as I was going to make a great tutorial to make round ornie, and generally work on my website. And now I can't do any of this. And Blogger doesn't want to change my profile, not a happy puppy ! Ok, accepted to change my whole design, it's not so bad.

But I hate having that stupid crochet cat as a profile picture ! I might have to disable the whole thing....

Most of my Christmas trip preparations are done, I even havea new halogen lamp thanks to Argos... But I had to be in town at 9am, (after going to bed at 1am) to be there before everybody else.

So here is a picture of Winter Wonderland I finished last night. I hate working on evenweave, linen rocks ! Why? it seems I see the holes better, with evenweave I'm always afraid I would miscount. But hey, extra care makes this piece totally mistake free !!!! A miracle?

I love this piece. It ooks nothing like the original piece. Of course,I changed most of the colours... I think I should finish it as a quilted frame. A regular frame wouldn't fit in my suitcase, and just would go with DBF's decorations. So I'll have to fight with my sewing machine later today...

I see the question "what next?" coming... I started preparing "Country stitcher. city stitcher", and I had to change a few threads (am I too cheap to by more DMC colours, or is it the impression that I already have too many?). My trip project will be the Margaret Sherry cat freebie.

I also packed a Jane Greenoff mini sampler. But I have the impression I will be finished with all this before the end of my holidays, so I might add some stuff... Plus I don't want to start "Country Stitcher" now, so I think I will start the Coutry Cottage Needleworks "house with ewe" that everybody had already stitched...

As you can see, I feel like blabbing, and my website is dead, not happy ! I feel I will extend the use of my mailing list to "breakdown" migrations...
