Eflin gets first big league win with complete game

Zach Eflin with Reading in 2015, image- Jay Floyd Rookie right-hander Zach Eflin needed 92 pitches to finish a complete game and notch his first big league victory on Tuesday night. The effort helped the Phillies lock down a 5-1 win over Atlanta at Citizens Bank Park. Helped along by four double plays in his nine innings of work, the 22-year-old Eflin breezed through the night, surrendering just a single run while striking out six and walking none in nine innings of work. The lone blemish was a solo homer run surrendered to Braves center fielder Ender Enciarte. It was the former Phillie's first home run of the season. The Phillies put on a power display in the contest, slamming four solo homers. Peter Bourjos got the scoring started with a solo shot in the first inning, his fourth of the year. Cody Asche added his fourth of the season in the fourth inning. Freddy Galvis plated another run in that same frame with a sacrifice fly. Maikel Franco and Tommy Jose...

Phils walk-off in dramatic fashion with Hunter blast

On Friday in Clearwater, the Phillies blew a sizable lead, walking six batters in the 8th and 9th innings combined, but did not quit and held on to lock down a shocking win over the Braves by a score of 12-11. Early on, third baseman Maikel Franco was the top offensive performer for the Phils, as he went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI. The strong effort takes Franco's spring average to .364. Expect to see a lot of this from @MaikelFranco7 this season: https://t.co/A4CunZ2MWv #SpringTraining pic.twitter.com/OAIpSyQt4O — MLB (@MLB) March 4, 2016 Flame thrower Luis Garcia struggled, as he was charged with four earned runs on five hits and two walks in one inning pitched. Hector Neris loaded the bases in the ninth and walked in a run before the team called on youngster Edubray Ramos to close out the game, clinging to a 9-8 lead. Ramos would walk home the tying run and then a Darnell Sweeney throwing error, his second miscue of the day, allowed two more runs to score, ...

Series Preview: Phillies at Braves, April 3-4

After a loss to the Braves at Atlanta's Turner Field on Monday, the Phillies will turn to right-hander Roy Halladay to help the team notch its first win of the new season.  For Halladay, though, more focus may be on proving he can bounce back from a difficult spring (6.06 ERA, .323 batting average against, in six outings) and an even worse 2012 campaign that saw him not only dealing with performance issues, but an ailing body as well. Beginning in May last year, Halladay missed roughly seven weeks due to a strained right lat muscle.  The physical concerns led to a ballooned ERA that nearly double itself from the previous season (from 2.35 to 4.49). Additionally, Halladay has struggled against Atlanta, having not recorded a victory over the Braves since September, 2010. Trying to continue their winning ways, the Braves will counter with lefty Paul Maholm , who was acquired by Atlanta in a trade with the Cubs last July. Read ahead for details on the pitching match u...

Phillies at Braves: 2013 Opening Day Game Preview

At long last, the new season is upon us.  With the Phillies out of the postseason for the first time in six seasons last year, the time between their last contest and the following season's opener was certainly longer than most fans in the Philly region had grown accustomed to.  But, after a considerable wait, a chance to reclaim the top spot in the National League East division is about to begin. Opening the season on the road, the Phillies will send lefty ace Cole Hamels to the mound at Atlanta's Turner Field to take on right-handed veteran Tim Hudson . Series Preview: Braves at Phillies, Sept 21-23

With an opportunity to lock down a postseason spot, the Braves (86-64) head to Philadelphia to begin a three-game series against the Phillies (76-74).  Despite a recent hot streak, during which the Phils have posted a 13-5 record this month and climbed to within 4 games of the National League's second Wild Card spot, the defending five-time NL East division champions are at risk of missing the playoffs, with three teams ahead of them for the a postseason berth and less than two weeks left in the regular season. Prior to the series opener, the Phillies will honor future Hall of Famer Chipper Jones , as the switch-hitter continues his fair well tour around the league. Read ahead to check out details on the pitching match ups and other key statistical notes from this series.  Friday, 7:05 PM.  Tommy Hanson (12-8, 4.33 ERA) vs. Kyle Kendrick (9-11, 3.95 ERA).   Hanson has a 2-2 record with a 3.06 ERA in 9 career starts against the Phillies.  In 15 road ...

Series Preview: Braves at Phillies, August 6-8

The Braves (62-46) travel to Philadelphia to begin a three-game series with the Phillies (49-59) on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park. In the past month, the two clubs have faced each other in two separate series, with the Braves winning all six of the contests. With their newly extended lefty ace in tow, the Phillies (45-54) hit the road and visit the Braves (54-44) to begin a three-game set on Friday night at Turner Field in Atlanta. Hamels was the team's 1st round draft selection back in 2002 and he'll start the series opener. The Phillies will begin the road trip without third baseman Placido Polanco , who was placed on the disabled list with back inflammation, retroactive to July 23rd. Lakewood's Buchanan Shining in the SAL

Lakewood starting pitcher David Buchanan is off to a tremendous start in the 2011 season. Through 9 starts, the right-hander has prevailed as the premiere hurler on the Phillies Class A BlueClaws staff. Buchanan, a 7th round draft pick of the Phillies in last year's amateur draft, has used his fastball, his slider and his sinker to dominate South Atlantic League batters. Following his victory against the West Virginia Power on Sunday, Buchanan leads the league in ERA (2.21) and innings pitched (57) and is tied for the league lead in wins (6). Earlier this month, Buchanan threw a complete game and got the win against the Yankees affiliate Charleston RiverDogs. It was the BlueClaws' first 9 inning complete game since 2007, when Carlos Monasterios achieved the feat. The 6-foot-3-inch, 190-pound Buchanan is humble and credits the team and coaches behind him for helping him achieve early success in his first full season of professional baseball. "I've got great guys behind ...

In the series opener on Friday, the Phillies will look to stay on a hot streak, as they've won 6 of their past 7 games, including a 3-game sweep of the Nationals this week. Series Preview: Phillies at Braves, 4/8-4/10

The four-time defending National League East division champion Phillies head to Atlanta this weekend to take on the team that many experts say has the greatest chance to dethrone the kings of the east. In Atlanta's home opener, the Braves will send Tim Hudson to the mound, as the Phillies counter with top off-season free agent acquisition Cliff Lee. The return of Lee to Philadelphia drew many comparisons, for the Phillies' starting rotation, to the Braves well known pitching staff of the 1990's that included Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz. Read ahead for analysis on the pitching match ups for this series as well as plenty more key stats. Friday, 7:05pm. Cliff Lee (1-0, 3.86 ERA) vs. Tim Hudson (1-0, 1.29 ERA).
