Phillies' Bohm among finalists for Rookie of the Year Award

In news that likely surprised nobody, Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday that Phillies first baseman/third baseman Alec Bohm is among the finalists for this year's National League Rookie of the Year Award.   Bohm, who entered the 2020 season as the Phillies top-ranked offensive prospect, performed extremely well following his promotion to the big league's from the club's alternate training site.  In 44 games the 24-year-old tallied a .338 batting average with four home runs and 23 RBI.  The average and RBI total ranked first among all NL rookies, as did his on base percentage (.400), slugging percentage (.481) and hits total (54).   Impressive in clutch situations, Bohm notched a .452 batting average with runners in scoring position, which was best in baseball.  Even more outstanding, the talented youngster struck out just four times in those situations. The six-foot-five 225 pounder was the Phils' first round draft selection out of Wichita S...

Series Preview: Padres at Phillies, May 11-13

It's been a number of years since the Phillies (14-18) were 4 games under .500 at this stage of the season.  That happened in 2007, to be precise, and that year marked the beginning of the club's streak of 5 consecutive National League East division titles.  The Phillies hope to bounce back in the same way they did back then, as they take on the San Diego Padres, who, at 11-21, sport the worst record in the NL. The two teams begin a three-game series on Friday evening. To open the series, the Padres will send lefty hurler Clayton Richard to the mound.  Richard has lost his last 4 starts.  The Phillies will counter with righty Vance Worley , who is fresh off his worst outing of the season when he surrendered 5 earned runs in 6 innings pitched against Washington last Saturday. The Phillies won 3 of 4 meetings with San Diego at Citizens Bank Park last season. Read ahead for more information on the pitching match ups for this series as well as plenty more stat...

Series Preview: Phillies at Padres, April 19-22

Last year, the Phillies dominated the Padres, winning 7 of 8 games between the two clubs, including all 4 that were played in San Diego. This year, fresh off a disappointing loss Wednesday night to the Giants, despite 10 scoreless innings from Cliff Lee, the Phillies limp into Petco Park in an unfamiliar position...for the first time in nearly five years, Philadelphia has sole possession of last place in the National League East division. The Padres (3-10) are also holding down last place, in the NL West. Hoping to turn things around, the Phils (5-7) will send 24-year-old right-hander Vance Worley to the mound. Worley sports a 12-5 record and a 2.93 ERA in his big league career. San Diego will counter with 22-year-old righty Joe Wieland, who was acquired, along with pitcher Robbie Erlin, from Texas for Mike Adams last July. The Phillies (61-36) return home to begin a 4-game series with the Padres (44-55) on Friday night at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park. Returning from the disabled list and joining the active Phillies roster for the first time this season, following a long rehab process in the minors for his injured shoulder and elbow, Brad Lidge will rejoin the club he helped reach the post-season each of the past 3 seasons. With 99 saves as a member of the Phillies, Lidge ranks fourth all-time in team history, 13 behind Jose Mesa for the top spot. To make room for Lidge, Philadelphia designated Danys Baez (2-4, 6.25 ERA) for assignment. Baez struggled in recent weeks, posting a 14.89 ERA since May 25th. The struggling Phillies scored just 7 runs in the 4 games against Houston. Philadelphia has lost 9 games this month. Setting aside one of those losses (a 15-9 defeat by the Dodgers), the Phillies have totaled just 10 runs in their other 8 August losses. Advice For the Phils: Learning From Others

These days, many phans would advise the Phillies to avoid doing silly things like trading away ace pitchers for garbage prospects and signing guys with silent S's at the end of their first name. Those tips would, of course, use hindsight and look into the Phils' own recent mistakes. PhoulBallz.com has been reviewing some other MLB franchises, and has developed some tips for the home team. Today, we offer a list of 5 things the Phillies should avoid doing. #5- Letting their manager hang out with the city's head football coach, like they do in Seattle. Charlie Manuel's family is drug free and his team can win championships. Nothing good would come from rubbing elbows with the likes of the Eagles' coach. #4- Fruity flying hip touches. Leave that to the Metros in NYC...and that other team too. #3- Engaging in any sort of contact like these Padres. Shoulder impalement and stinky fingers do not help players win baseball games. #2- Doing their hair as though they are t...

Series Preview: Padres at Phillies 6/4-6/7

Six days after his last outing, Roy Halladay will take the mound again for the Phillies. Last time out, Halladay was perfect against the Marlins. The slumping Phillies needed that sort of effort from their ace pitcher as they won just 2 games on their recent 9 game road trip and haven't scored more than 3 runs in a game since May 21st. The Padres will counter with Mat Latos, to start the series opener. Latos has won 4 straight decisions for San Diego. The Phils will attempt to change their bad offensive luck. The core of the batting order, the 3, 4 & 5 hitters (Utley, Howard & Werth), have been the main culprits, combining for just 5 RBI over the past 11 games. Read ahead for details on the pitching match ups and loads of other key stats from this series. Friday, 7:05pm. Mat Latos (5-3, 3.08 ERA) vs. Roy Halladay (7-3, 1.99 ERA). Latos, a right-hander, has a 1.54 ERA over his last 6 starts. In 5 road starts this season, Latos is 3-1 with a 3.41 ERA. Opponents are hitting ....

Sunday School: History Lesson 22

Tony Gonzalez was an outfielder with the Phillies from 1960-1968. The Cuban born Gonzalez was a terrific defensive outfielder who was solid at the plate also. Gonzalez debuted in the Major Leagues with Cincinnati in 1960, but veterans Frank Robinson, Gus Bell and Vada Pinson were blocking his playing time. Gonzalez was traded along with Lee Walls to Philadelphia for Harry Anderson, Fred Hopke and Wally Post on June 15, 1960. Gonzalez would quickly contribute as our Phillies' centerfielder, batting .299 in 78 games played. Gonzalez would go on to bat over .300 three times for the Phillies. Gonzalez was small in stature (5'9", 170 pounds), but he would display surprising power also. In 1963, Tony hit 20 homers. His best offensive season, however, came in 1967, when he posted a .339 batting avg, to finish second in the batting race. On defense, Gonzalez had a couple remarkable seasons as well. In 1962, he played 112 games in the outfield without an error. And, the year he fin...

June Starts Out West

Our Phillies begin a west coast trip tonight, when they visit San Diego. The Padres are so excited that the World Champs are coming to town that they've been seen hugging, leaping on, grabbing and grinding each other. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
