As part of our weekly spring training series, Phillies third base prospect Cody Asche is back once again to check in, directly from spring training in Clearwater, FL. A 4th round draft selection in 2011 out of the University of Nebraska, Asche has been a fast rising prospect since joining the Phillies organization. Last year, the 22-year-old, in his first full professional season, tallied a .324 batting average with 12 home runs, 72 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 130 combined games with Class A Advanced Clearwater and Double-A Reading. Asche followed that up with a .281/.343/.438 line with Peoria in the Arizona Fall League, then went 5-for-14 (.357 average) with two doubles in eight big league spring games this year. More reasons to follow me on Twitter...if you missed Monday's news about the Phillies' release of right-handed pitcher Juan Morillo , you may have also missed me breaking another cut on Tuesday morning, when the Phils parted ways with righty hurler Ryan Duke . The #Phillies have parted ways with RHP Ryan Duke, who was a 25th rd draft pick in 2011. #MiLB — Jay Floyd (@PhoulBallz) March 12, 2013 Duke, a University of Oklahoma product, was selected by the Phillies in the 25th round of the 2011 amateur draft. In two professional seasons, the 24-year-old Texas native sported a 1-3 record with 10 saves and a 2.73 ERA in 55 combined games at five levels. Steven De Fratus happens to be related to one of the Phillies' top young relief pitchers, a fellow named Justin. Steven's nickname for his adoring brother is "J-Bone" and Steven is hoping that moniker will catch on with the Philadelphia faithful some day soon. It's clear that a rookie on the rise with a team already loaded with household names might be in need of a little love from the fan base. Wouldn't it be a fine time to let Justin know that, even in the off-season, the fans are behind him? In addition to that, it's the season of giving. What about providing Steven with a bit of love as well, by kicking the nickname of his choosing into gear by sending Justin a shout out? It is not often that a player will reach out publicly to fans and take the full burden for his team's loss. Many times, players will deliver an overly used athlete quote like, "Gotta let that go and get 'em tomorrow," which isn't bad, but it gets quite routine after hearing it dozens upon dozens of times over the years. Considering that, in the past, quotes from team personnel would normally be delivered to the masses via sports reporters, who could edit out any expletives that might have been uttered, hearing genuine, unedited thoughts from a sports figure is rather uncommon. These days, however, things are considerably different. With the current state of technology, players are able to bypass the middle man and connect with thousands of people almost instantly. In a tremendous effort, Kyle Kendrick went 8 shut out innings in Colorado on Tuesday night to lock down the Phillies' 70th win of the season, as Philadelphia downed the Rockies by a score of 5-0. In the outing, Kendrick allowed just 4 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 7 batters. Recently, it has been suspected that the right-handed Kendrick is in danger of losing his starting spot, as veteran hurler Roy Oswalt is slated to return soon from the disabled list. Kendrick would likely move into a relief role, at that point. However, I know multiple sources linked to this piece, so I shall let it live. Occasionally, a sensation will take the Nation of Phils tweeters by storm. This past weekend, it was the move by Phillies right-handed reliever Mike Stutes to join the online Tweetfest. Interestingly, Stutes had a bit of a wager going when he decided to create his own Twitter account last Friday. Scott Mathieson, who has pitched in relief for the Phillies this season but is currently settling into the role of starter for the first time in four years with the Triple A Lehigh Valley IronPigs, felt that Stutes could not collect 1,000 followers on the social networking site within the first 24 hours. Not only did Stutes exceed the 1,000 mark, but he more than doubled that goal after a single day. Mathieson, who last week had to watch his hometown Vancouver Canucks...
