Saturday:9 American Authors

Thanks to Samantha, over at Saturday:9, for yet another interesting meme for us! Link up and join the fun on this last day of April.

Best Day of My Life

Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: Best Day of My Life (2013)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

I'll just let you know that I've never heard of this group or the song, but it IS kind of kicky.

1) This song begins by mentioning clouds. Do you see clouds in the sky this fine Saturday?  Yes. Not rain clouds though.

2) Lead singer Zac Barnett sings that, "Everything is looking up." What are you looking forward to today?
Sleeping in!!

3) 2016 is not yet half over, but what's been your best day so far this year?  This has been a tough year for us, health wise, so I guess my best day was knowing Joe's stroke wasn't totally debilitating and that he would recover nearly 100%.

4) The members of the group, American Authors, met in college. When is the last time you heard from a school chum? Do you know them from grammar school, high school or college?
My dear friend, Karen and her husband Lee were just here for a visit. Karen and I have been friends since elementary school.  I hear from her and my other BFF, Elaine, from grade school frequently on social media and email.

5) One of the all-time best-selling American authors is romance writer Danielle Steele. She's been writing for more than 40 years and has sold more than 800 million books. Have you read any of her work? I think I have read a couple of her books, but she is not a favorite of mine.

6) Have you ever dreamed of being an author? Nope.

7) Do you have an e-reader?  Yes, I do!  Kindle Fire.

8) American Authors rang in 2016 in Chicago, giving an outdoor concert on New Year's Eve on a stage not far from Lake Michigan. There are 5 Great Lakes in all, including Lake Michigan. Without looking it up, name the other 4.  I lived on Lake Erie for a few years, Lake Huron, Lake Ontario and Lake Superior. I was born and raised in Ohio. We know our lakes (especially Erie & Michigan).

9) Random question: You see photos on Facebook of a dinner party hosted by a friend. You recognize most of the attendees, yet you weren't invited. How do you feel? Left out and angry? Do you wonder what you may have done to offend your friend? Or do you just forget about it and move on?
I would forget about it and move on.  We have several circles of friends and they don't all over-lap. We also all have dining rooms with only so many chairs.  I would not feel bad.  I'm not that kind of friend.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

Hope your weekend is off to a good start!  Thanks for your visit today!  Peace & hugs.

Friday Foto Friends....

I'm joining Friday Foto Friends today.  Click HERE to link up with Debbie at Breathing In Grace and join the fun!

I only have one image to share.  The Museum's Mayfaire by-the-Lake art festival is Mother's Day weekend - coming fast!!  Our t-shirts came in this week. We are always excited to see what the artist we chose to do the t-shirt and poster image comes up with for us.  This year is the Museum's 50th year and it is the 45th year for Mayfaire. Here is this year's image. Colorful and fun! It is fashioned after a neon sign that would hang on the front of a retro building.  It says Polk Museum of Art Celebrating 50 Years.  The swan image is Lakeland's logo. We are the City of Swans.

And it is also on the cover of the new Polk Life Magazine!!

The t-shirts will be for sale. We also have baseball caps, magnets, and greeting cards with the image. I think it will be popular with our visitors. Fifty years and 45 years are big deals!!

Thank goodness it is Friday!! Wishing you a good weekend and thanks for your visit here today!

Peace & hugs.

Thursday Missive....

Not knowing what else to call today's post, I just used "missive".  One of the posts I read yesterday made reference to a challenge to go without social media, cell phones, computers, iPads, etc., for two days each week. Since my work keeps me pretty well tied to a computer, going for two days without using a computer is not possible (unless you count Saturday and Sunday). Now that doesn't mean I couldn't stay away from social media (but why would I want to?!).

Anyway, those thoughts led me to think about the callus I have on my hand from using the computer as much as I do.  My skin gets callused easily.  My foot doctor told me that calluses are usually a genetic thing and asked about my parents.  Yes, my mom had bad callouses and so do my siblings. Our skin just doesn't shed like it should - so the doctor told me.  Hope this isn't TMI. Friction causes the skin to form a callus to protect it from injury.

My left hand resting on the wrist pad that I use at my computer.

There is the callus on the heel of my hand from resting it on the wrist pad.

I used to have a callus on my finger from holding a pencil/pen.  It is gone and I have this instead.

I use lotion. I use a sandstone. I think the only thing that will make it go away is when I........

RETIRE!!  (Did you see that coming?)

Thanks (always) for your visit!!  Peace & hugs.

The Hodgepodge is Back This Week!!!

Thank you, Joyce, From This Side of the Pond, for another fun Hodgepodge!  Join in with all of us Hodgepodgers by clicking HERE and then linking up with your answers.

Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 264

1. This is the last Hodgepodge in April. Share something you learned this month.  I learned that all doctors are not created equal. See my post from yesterday.

2.  It's National Poetry Month, and we all know you can't escape an April Hodgepodge without a little poetry. Keeping the first line as is, change the rest of the wording in this familiar rhyme to make it your own (Poetry is not one of my strengths.) - 'Hickory Dickory Dock...

Hickory Dickory Dock,
My cat ran around the block.
She came home, but was followed
By a flock of barn swallows.
The noise they made was a shock!

3. What were one or two rules in the home you grew up in?  10:00 curfew on weekends - even when I was a senior in high school!  Growing up, did you feel your parents were strict? Yes.  Looking back do you still see it that way?  Yes, they were with me, a little less with my brother and heck - hardly at all with my two little sisters!  Ha!  I'm sure they will disagree!  :)

4. Tell us about a kitchen or cooking disaster or mishap you've experienced. Do you have many from which to choose?  Cooking... I don't know that I've had any I would call a disaster, but lots of times a recipe isn't as good as I was hoping it would be. I did have a kitchen disaster quite a few years ago.  I turned on the self-cleaning oven, not realizing that oil had spilled over in the bottom of the oven.  It caught fire and smoke filled the house. We had to call the fire department to clear out the smoke. The oven was fine, by the way. The Fireman told me they are made to withstand temperatures like that. What a mess, though!  And it stunk for days after. We had to buy some smoke odor-remover from a janitorial supply place and used it liberally.

5. Plant a kiss, plant doubt, plant a tree, plant yourself somewhere...which on the list have you most recently planted?  I've planted kisses most recently, with Joey and Darlene here visiting.  Hugs and kisses hello; hugs and kisses goodnight....

6. What's your most worn item of clothing this time of year?  Gosh, I don't have one thing that I wear over and over - I have an entire closet full of clothes I wear over and over!  LOL  Are you tired of it?  I just recycled more warm-weather clothing from the over-flow closet and put away cold-weather items. Not much difference here in Florida, but there is a difference and it feels like I have some "new" things to wear to work now.

7. I'm wrapping up the A-Z Blog Challenge this month and our Hodgepodge lands on letter W. What's one word beginning with W that describes you in some way?  Weary.  How about a word to describe your home, also beginning with W?  Weathered....we need to get the pressure washer out and clean the driveway, sidewalk and pool deck.  Nasty green stuff everywhere!

8. Insert your own random thought here.  This water bottle holds 60 ounces of water. I bring it to work with me every day and make myself drink it all.  I'm amazed at how different I feel when I am well hydrated!  On weekends, I don't fill it and by mid-day I can really tell if I have not had enough water to drink.  I actually get thirsty now if I don't get my 60 ounces (or more). I also have a cup or two of coffee in the morning, and iced tea or more bottled water in the evening. It really does feel good to be hydrated.  Do you drink enough liquid every day?

I so appreciate your visit!  No whining today. I'm over it (referencing yesterday's post).

Happy Hodgepodge!!  Peace & hugs.

Tuesday Tidbits....

Joey and Darlene have been with us for a couple of nights and it's been fun having them. For so long they were 1,600 miles away and we were lucky to see them once a year. Now we can get together so much more often with only a five-hour drive between us!  They have to leave today, but we at least know we will see them again soon!

There is a new restaurant in Brandon, FL, that I heard is really good (out of Chicago).  We decided to visit it for lunch, after my doctor appointment yesterday.  Darlene decided to stay home with the pups, but Joey rode along with us.  It was not what we expected, but it WAS delicious!  We will go again!

Joe and I had the Italian Beef sandwich with hot peppers. I had the onion rings (shared with Joe). Joey had a tuna steak sandwich and cheese fries.  Yummy stuff!! It was nicely crowded but the lines moved quickly.

Now, for the doctor thing.  What a disappointment. First of all, a co-worker recommended the Florida Orthopaedic Institute to me after she had a great experience there with her torn ACL.  Six months ago, I called for an appointment with one of the doctors. Some of you may remember that I got a phone call while I was on the road, going to the appointment, that the doctor was called away for an emergency. Great. I understand - it happens. They wanted to reschedule, but I said I had nothing invested with that doctor, perhaps there was another one I could see sooner.  They gave me Dr. Miranda so I went to the appointment and liked him okay. Spent most of the appointment with the P.A.  I set my next appointment with him for two weeks ago.  Wouldn't you know it...Dr. Miranda was called out of town and they had to cancel my appointment. We rescheduled for yesterday, at 1:30.

We arrived at 1:05 for the 1:30 appointment. Checked in and paid the co-pay,  Sat in the waiting room (which Joey later described as very like an ER waiting room - crowded and stinky). After waiting for an hour and 10 minutes, I went up to ask how much longer it would be.  She told me the doctor was running 45 minutes behind and there were still two ahead of me.  I'm sorry, but it makes me furious. I told her to take my name off the list and that I wouldn't be back.  Walked out with my boys following. Two cancellations and making me wait for nearly two hours. I want nothing to do with this medical group. They are also 40 minutes away from Lakeland.  So - now I can decide to keep next month's appointment with my local doctor, or try to find another one.  I've been so disappointed.with my orthopaedic doctors.  I'm too young for knee replacement, or I'm too heavy for knee replacement.  So what other help can I get?  Is there a brace that will help? I know there aren't any pain meds I can take because I'm on blood thinners. Well, I can take Tylenol (which ruins your liver) or Tramadol (which makes me sleepy and nauseous).

Have you had enough of my whining?  I'm sorry.  My knees hurt. I just want some help with them.  I'm very frustrated right now. I want a doctor who will take an interest.  Our nephew is 10 years younger than me and weighs just 8 pounds less than me. He has two new knees. Do I need to move up to Maryland to find a doctor who will take my problems seriously?  Our nephew has thyroid problems. I lost my entire thyroid to cancer. Two of my medications slow my metabolism and my heart rate (AFib). Excuses, excuses. I know. Poor me.

Thanks for getting this far - for listening!  I appreciate you!  Peace & hugs. I'll shake it off and will be ready to tackle this again - maybe tomorrow. Sigh.

Monday Already!

We had a busy afternoon yesterday and an extra unexpected guest for dinner. It was a fun evening. More about that later.

Joey and Darlene are here for a couple of days. I see my knee doctor this afternoon...

Doing this on my phone, which I am not good at! LOL

Thanks for peeking in!  Peace & hugs!

Sunday Stealing Time....

Thanks to Kwizgiver for another fun Sunday Stealing!  Join HERE and link up with the rest of us!

Ask Questions, Yo

Welcome back to Sunday Stealing which originated on WTIT: The Blog authored by Bud Weiser. Here we will steal all types of memes from every corner of the blogosphere. Our promise to you is that we will work hard to find the most interesting and intelligent memes. You may have heard the expression, “honor amongst thieves”. In that age-old tradition, we try to credit the blog that we stole it from. We also provide a link to the victim's meme in our "Previous Victims" widget. (It's our way of saying "Thanks!") Sometimes we edit the original meme, to make it more relevant to our global players, to challenge our players, to select the best questions, or simply to make it less repetitive from this new meme or recently asked questions from a previously featured meme.
Cheers to all of us thieves!!!

Saturday:9 It's all about Prince...

Thanks to Samantha for this tribute to Prince in this Saturday's 9!!  Join the fun HERE!

Little Red Corvette

Welcome to Saturday: 9.

Saturday 9: LIttle Red Corvette
From the archives.
In memory of Prince (1958-2016)

1) The subject of this song is frankly sexual. Do you blush easily? Not as easily as I used to, but yes.

2) Prince was his real first name (Prince Rogers, to be exact). Growing up, his relatives called him "Skipper." Do you have any nicknames within your family? My dad called me "T" or Teelee (middle name is Lee). Terri is my nickname though, with my "real" name Teresa.

3) Prince said he was "obsessed" with Mozart and read whatever he can find about the composer. What's the last book you read? I am in the middle of a book right now, but the last one I finished was a Stephanie Plum mystery #23.

4) Between Prince and The Beach Boys, the Corvette is a much sung-about car. Tell us about your vehicle. I drive a 2006 Kia Sportage and LOVE it!

5) In the 1980s, when Prince was popular, MTV could turn a song into a hit. In 2016, where do you hear new music? I listen to oldies and couldn't tell you what new song is a hit right now.

6) In 1982, when "Little Red Corvette" ruled the airwaves, Braniff Airways shocked the travel industry and threw passengers into chaos by declaring bankruptcy. When did you last fly? I believe it was 2007. Did your trip go smoothly? Yes, but I hate airports and prefer to drive.

7) 1982 is also the year Disney opened Epcot. Have you ever been to a Disney park? I live 45 minutes from the Disney parks and we had season passes for a few years, so yes, I've been to all the ones in Orlando.

8) 1982 is the year Cheers premiered. The sitcom was set in a bar where "everybody knows your name." Tell us about your favorite local bar or restaurant. No favorite bars and we have lots of favorite restaurants - none know us by name.

9) The 1980s were considered a highpoint in professional tennis, with Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe dominating the sport. Do you play tennis? Nope. Never learned how. When I was growing up there were no tennis courts anywhere close.

Thanks so much for stopping by today!  Have a good Saturday!!  Peace & hugs.

Friday Foto Friends - Stop and Smell the Roses!

Yesterday morning, I was running a little behind schedule and decided I would buy my lunch instead of packing something (which is what I usually do).  At noon, rather than get in the car and drive somewhere, I called and ordered from the only food establishment within walking distance (at least for someone with bad knees!) of the Museum.

Mr. Fish is a Lakeland icon and has been there, in the same location, since Hector was a pup (never heard that expression? Click HERE). Actually, their website says "Serving Lakeland Since 1968".

The day was so pretty that I decided to snap some photos on my way back to the Museum and share them with you today for Friday Foto Friends.

Mr. Fish is a tiny building tucked into the corner of a larger building. The parking lot only holds five cars and it is always full, sometimes with people waiting to pull in.  They sell burgers too, but are known for their seafood - especially the fish sandwiches (what I had!). There is one picnic table and no inside seating.  I chose to not photograph the building because there were a dozen people standing in line, waiting for their orders (I always call mine in!).

You can take your lunch down to the lake and find more tables where you can also watch the swans, geese and ducks (and fight to keep your food from them!).

The main Lakeland Library is just across the street from Mr. Fish. Those are rose bushes blooming next to the building and sidewalk.  I crossed the street there to get a closer look....

Just beautiful!  We all should stop and at least look at the roses!

Walking a little further toward the Museum is this bed of flowers. I have no idea what they are, but they are very pretty.

Looking back at the front of the Library, which actually faces the parking lot and the Museum, rather than Lake Morton (though the back library lawn is lovely and I've been to a wedding held there).

Looking at the Museum from the Library.

I've talked about my corner office and you have seen photos I've taken from there in the past...that is the window of my corner office, by the tallest palm tree. It really is on a corner!

Polk Museum of Art with our "Rebels With a Cause" poster (current exhibit) and two of our sculptures.

Flowers in front of the Museum (again, I have no idea what they are).

This is our newest sculpture, by Gino Miles.

We call this sculpture, by John Henry, "the french fries".  Note the school bus in the parking lot. We tour every 5th grader in Polk County (nearly 6,000 kids) each school year. Our Docents are amazing volunteers who do an excellent job teaching kids the importance of art in their lives.

We are open to the public six days a week, FREE to all.

The Mural called "Monkey Business"  by Ruben Ubiera is seen as you walk into the Museum.

Ruben included many things "Lakeland" in his Mural and that sailor guy is the logo for Mr. Fish!!  Your can see him on the sign in my first photo!

So there you have my walk back to the office, where I really enjoyed the fish sandwich with a small order of tater tots (instead of fries) and coleslaw.  YUM!!  I just love tater tots, by the way!!

I appreciate your visit!  Peace & hugs.

Thankful and Throwback Thursday....

I heard that my grandma was released from the hospital to a nursing home yesterday.  We are so thankful that they had a bed in the same home she was in a few years ago, after breaking her hip. We visited her there and know it is a good place with wonderful staff.

This is her holding me when I was not even a month old.  She is my "step" grandma but has always been in my life.  I've learned that love lines are just as strong (or stronger) than blood lines.

Here she is a few years ago, around Mother's Day.  Those are flowers we sent to her.

I want to thank my prayer partners again for keeping her in your thoughts and prayers.  We are going to Ohio in a few weeks and I hope she is well enough for us to spend some time with her.

Thanks for your visit today!  Peace, love & hugs.

Tuesday Tidbits....

  • Thanks for the prayers! My grandma is "stable" right now. Not sure how long she has, but we know she will be in the hospital a few more nights before being released to a nursing home for some rehab. I doubt she will ever be able to stay at her house alone again, but she might surprise us!  We will see her at the end of May when we head up to Ohio for my niece's wedding.
  • Joe got a new medicine today, to replace another.  His doctor says to give this one two weeks to work and another EKG at that time will tell what the next step will be.  He feels okay, but just gets tired real fast.
  • Work was brutal yesterday, getting caught up after being off last week. Whew!!
  • After work, Joe and I went out to eat at Mellow Mushroom.  It's a new pizza place that opened a few weeks ago. We refuse to stand in line for a restaurant, so have been waiting for the crowds to die down.  I can only say that the pizza was just okay - we've certainly had better. The "tossed salad" was bag salad with a few slices of mushroom and two tiny slices of tomato. The service was intrusive...she was in our face constantly. Just a bad experience and we won't go again.
  • After eating, we had to run to Sam's Club and then to Publix. We were both done-in by the time we got home shortly after 8:00. Joe was so tired, he sat in the Publix cafe while I checked out.
That's all I have today!  Since Joyce is taking tomorrow off, from the Hodgepodge, I think I will also take the day off from posting.

I appreciate your visit!  Peace & hugs.

Monday Blessing...

Back to work today.  Nothing new to add to yesterday's weekend update.  I do want to ask my prayer partners to keep my step-grandmother in your prayers.  She is 96 (almost 97) and was taken to the hospital yesterday.  The last word I had was that she is stable, but most likely will not be going home. She has been living at home and doing fine, but I think her time at home is over and they will put her in assisted living. She has been blessed. Thanks for remembering her!  Erma Thompson.

And thanks for your visit! Peace & hugs!

Simple Sunday....

I've chosen to not do Sunday Stealing today.  The questions didn't interest me, so I'm just doing a few tidbits to capture our Friday and Saturday....

Friday, Joe, Jeff and I drove over to Tarpon Springs. I've written about Tarpon Springs many times before.  It is a favorite destination for us because we enjoy all the shops along the sponge docks and love the Greek food, bread, and pastries. Jeff requested that we go, and we couldn't say no! LOL

Jeff enjoyed a Greek beer with his Gyro.

My Gyro, with a couple of bites taken out of it. So good!!  All three of us had the Gyro.

 Inside Hella's restaurant.

Just a few of the goodies in the bakery at Hella's.

I had the chocolate kok.  Could only eat half of it.

We all had the Greek coffee. It is good, but very strong and quite different.

We headed home soon after finishing the coffee and pastries.  Joe brought three loaves of Easter Bread home with us. Two are in the freezer. It is his absolute favorite thing to get at Hella's. The Greek Orthodox Easter is May 1st this year, so their Easter is still to come.

Yesterday, we had to take Jeff to the airport and say good-bye.  He arrived home safely, and Kali was to pick him up. The traffic for us on I-4, both going to the airport and coming home, was horrendous. There were accidents and back-ups.  We got Jeff to the airport with only an hour to spare. We dropped him off at the departing flights doors and away he went (we got hugs first!).  Coming home, we were able to get off the interstate and take the back roads home. Lots of people were doing the same thing, though, so even Rt. 92 was hectic (but moving!).  Joe and I were both about done in.

Those of you who follow me regularly, know that Sunday is laundry day.  Oh my goodness, I have a two-week backup of laundry to do!!  You know it is making me nuts, so I got it started last night to get a head start.  Extra towels and sheets included. We have had a whirlwind of company and activity at our house.  It has been wonderful!!  I wouldn't trade time with dear friends and family for anything. Worth every extra load of laundry. Absolutely.

Now we have some quiet time ahead, until the Museum's Mayfaire (Mother's Day weekend). At the end of the month, we will be heading to Ohio for my niece's wedding. Between now and then, we can get back to normal...perhaps.

Joe is waiting to hear about a referral to another cardiologist who specializes in ablations.  There is one more medication they can try, too, so we are still waiting to see where this takes us.  He is feeling okay. I'm just trying to keep him quiet and not lifting things, etc. No sense making his heart beat faster than it is already going or putting undo stress on it.  Getting his clients' tax returns done has been hectic enough.

Back to work tomorrow for me. We have a wonderful mural painted by Ruben Ubiera (click the link to see more of his work) over the past week. It is SO fun, with lots of things included from around Lakeland.  He drove around the area "soaking in" the feel and he included so many fun things in the mural.  You really have to see it in person, but here it is....

Thanks for your visit, always!  Peace & hugs.

A beautiful Saturday:9....

You're Beautiful

Welcome to Saturday: 9.

Saturday 9: You're Beautiful (2005)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) The first line is of this song is, "My life is brilliant." Using one word, describe your life.  Blessed.

2)  This is about a chance encounter between strangers in a crowd, specifically the subway. What "crowded place" were you most recently in?   If you can consider I-4 a "place" we were just there yesterday, stuck in traffic.

3) Near the very end of this song, James Blunt sings, "It's time to face the truth." Do you believe you face things head on? Or do you tend to deny or put off the unpleasant? I believe I usually face things head on.

4) James Blunt went to an all-boys school. Some educators recommend single-sex classrooms because they maintain girls just naturally approach subjects like math and science differently than boys do. Do you agree?  I'm not an educator so I'm not qualified to answer this question, but I don't think I agree. Competition is good.

5) Blunt put his father in charge of his finances. Income taxes are top of mind for many of us this time of year. Do you do your own taxes?  Joe does them, but I did mine when I was single. Or do you go to an accountant or tax preparation service?  Joe is a CPA (grinning).

6)  In 2005, the year this song was a hit, the sitcom How I Met Your Mother was also popular.  Do you know how your parents met?  Yes, I do. My uncle introduced them.

7) 2005 is also the year Tom Cruise famously jumped on a sofa. Do you remember where he did this?  Yes, I saw him on Oprah when he did that. Ridiculous. I lost any respect for him, and don't care for Oprah any more.

8) 2005 was also the year YouTube really took off. What's the last video you watched?  I watched a video made by our daughter-in-law about the red car and puppy Brooke.

9) Random question ... Which of these high profile jobs would you enjoy more: head of General Motors, CEO of Apple or president of the New York Yankees?   None of the above, please. I'm ready to retire. I don't want any responsibility like that, period.
