Friday Photos...

I am sharing some photos from this week...

We went to the farm (Joe's client) on Wednesday.
These are my three amigos.

Horses have very big nostrils!! LOL
Doc was sniffing for more carrots

Look hard at the rock and you will see a green dragonfly.
There was a beautiful blue one too, but I couldn't catch it being still.

5:30 p.m. and the temp was 99° F.  HOT!

We stopped for Chinese food on the way home from the farm.

Did you know you can flip your JEEP cover over and it spells BEER?
We had a good laugh about it!

Next day... 4:08 pm and the temp is 100° F.  Hotter!

Lakeland is proud of our airport!!
The city is working with American Airlines to start
a service from Lakeland to Charlotte, NC.
Pretty sure that's going to happen... AND
Amazon is building a distribution center at the airport
and bringing around 1,000 jobs to Lakeland, Awesome!

This is the terminal building. It is lovely inside and there
is a good restaurant there too, where you can watch
the planes taking off and landing.

Thanks for stopping by today!!  Peace & hugs!

God bless!!

A Clipped Together Wednesday Medley...

I must admit that the National Day Calendar, at times, leaves me wondering whatever am I going to do with the choices given to us.  When I saw that it is National Paperclip Day tomorrow.... well, here we go!!  Please, please read all about this day before you skip to the questions. It really is quite inspiring!!  Seriously!

Everything below this line is from the National Day Calendar website.

National Paperclip Day May 29

NATIONAL PAPERCLIP DAY

National Paperclip Day is observed each year on May 29.  Yes, even the paperclip has its own day of honor. It is about that well-known piece of curved wire that keeps our papers together and helps keep us organized.
While there are much earlier claims to the invention of the paperclip, according to the Early Office Museum, the first patent for a “bent wire paper clip” was presented to Samuel B. Fay in the United States in 1867.   The original intention of Fay’s clip was to attach tickets to fabric. However, U.S. patent 64,088 recognized that it could also be used to attach papers together.
There were as many as 50 others that received patents for similar designs prior to 1899. One other notable name receiving a patent for his paperclip design in the United States was Erlman J. Wright in 1877.  At that time, his clip was advertised for use in fastening newspapers.
The Gem paperclip, which was most likely in production in Britain in the early 1870s by The Gem Manufacturing Company, was never patented.  It is the most common type of wire paper clip and is still in use today.  It was introduced to the United States around 1892 and in 1904, Cushman & Denison registered a trademark for the “Gem” name in connection with paper clips.  Paperclips are still sometimes called “Gem clips.”
Today, paperclips come in various sizes, shapes, and colors and can make your paperwork look more fun and lively.
Paperclips are not just for holding papers together. There are many other things that you can do with them!
  • Replace a zipper tab
  • Unclog a spray bottle
  • Unclog a single serve coffee maker
  • Hem holder
  • Emergency hooks for broken necklaces
The Paper Clip Project
During World War II this small, universal office supply provided a visual method of protest at a time when any outward signs of objection could be dangerous, even in familiar company.
Early in the war, Norwegians were particularly persistent in their development of symbols. The paper clip represented “sticking together” for a time until the Nazis caught on and banned the wearing of paper clips.
According to a March 5, 1941, Provo, Utah newspaper article (The Daily Herald), the Norwegians switched to new symbols as quickly as the bans could be issued.
In 1998, a group of middle school students led by language arts teacher Sandra Roberts and associate principal David Smith began a project through a Holocaust education class. The voluntary after-school class, Whitwell Middle School principal Linda Hooper’s idea, would be the foundation for developing tolerance and diversity.

Inspired by the story of the protesting Norwegians and their paper clips, the students began to collect six million paper clips – one paper clip representing one Jew who perished during the Holocaust. Adults today still wrestle with how the Holocaust could occur. Imagine middle school students trying to understand the magnitude of such an event on humanity.
The Paper Clip Project gained international attention and by 2001 the students collected more than 30 million paper clips. The school dedicated a Children’s Holocaust Memorial which displays an authentic German railcar filled with a portion of the paper clips.

1.  Wow!  Had you ever heard of the Holocaust project involving paperclips?  It is a great teaching project, for sure!  I had never heard of this project before reading about it here. Very worthwhile.  I may never look at a paperclip the same way again.

2.  Have you ever created a paperclip chain?  I freely admit to creating a paperclip chain.  How long did it get?  I think it got to be about three feet long.  It was a pain to take apart though.

3.  I use paperclips as hooks at Christmas time to put ornaments on the tree.  Works like a charm!! What is something you used a paperclip for, other than holding papers together?  I just admitted how I use them at Christmas time, but I also use them to reboot electronic devices, clean my fingernails occasionally, I have used one on several occasions for a zipper pull, and to hold jewelry together.  Have you seen the one using a paperclip to help fasten your bracelet?  Brilliant.

4.  I am amazed at the shapes and colors of paperclips available.  I found my favorite... share your favorite with us here!

5.  Say goodbye to May on this last Wednesday of May.  Be poetic if you will, or simply bid it adieu.  Remembering the beautiful weather we had at the beginning of May... and living now with the high 90s and humidity...

6.  Tell us something about your week so far, please!  My weekend recap post on Monday didn't include anything about the Memorial Day potluck we had up at the clubhouse. It was well attended, the food was amazing (my broccoli & rice casserole was gone) and the company was fun, as always. We met some new folks and caught up with a few we hadn't seen in a while.  I believe the count was around 90 which is great since the winter residents have gone home now.

Al and Theresa saved the table for us. Cute!!

There we are...

Al and Theresa

The four of us...

Good friends, Laura & Mic

New residents Miguel & Eilene, with Nancy standing between them.

We had only been home for about an hour when our friend, Mary Ellen, knocked on the door. She was driving by and decided to see if we were home.  Her hubby, Mike, has been up in Pennsylvania for a few weeks helping resettle his folks in their condo which has been damaged by a neighbor's fire. They are in their 90s.  He is due back in a couple of weeks.  It was great catching up with her and hearing about their folks. Hers are in their 90s too and still living on their own.  We will have dinner with them when Mike gets back.

Thanks for your visit!  If you answered the questions on your blog, please link up below with other Meddlers so we can all visit each other!

Peace & hugs!!  God bless!!

My Weekend Recap...

The weekend isn't really over since we have today off to celebrate Memorial Day and to remember all those brave men and women who gave their lives for us in service to this country.  May they rest in peace, knowing that their lives were not given in vain.  God bless America!  Land of the Brave.

On Friday, Joe and I ran some errands, including a trip to the post office downtown, to mail my sister's birthday gift.  There was a sky-writer who wrote Jesus Loves U and as it was fading, he started writing it again.  I posted this on Facebook so sorry if you have seen it already.

One of our errands was to pop into our local Ace Hardware.  We love Crowder Brother's Ace Hardware.  They truly do have everything and anything.  We needed a new flag pole and a red-white-and-blue windsock.  We bought metal this time and got a glorious 55" windsock. I've missed having it out there.  We swapped out the windsock for the flag today.

Notice the two bunnies in the empty lot across the street!

While there, we saw a small gas grill that was on sale (Memorial Day Special) and seemed like the perfect size for us.  I took a picture and when we got home I went online to make sure the price was good, and it was!  Saturday was laundry day, but after deliberating about the grill, we took a few minutes to go back to get it. Whew!!  There was only one left and they had just put it together (for us!)!  We got it, a gas canister, and a cover.  I'm excited to have a grill again.  We got rid of our big one when we moved here two years ago.  Our old one was so big, it seemed silly to fire it up for two burgers or two steaks.  This one is just perfect for two steaks or two burgers. Yay!

Yesterday we went to church and then Helen and Cheryl came over for lunch with us.  I had pulled pork, baked beans, potato salad, deviled eggs, watermelon, pickles and they brought lemon and red velvet cakes (small) for dessert.  There was enough to send some home with them for later.

Today we have a pot-luck at the Clubhouse.  Meats provided and all who come bring a dish to share. Social time starts at noon, with lunch served at 1:00.  It will be fun.  We have a table of nine saved.

Back to work tomorrow!  Looking forward to our trip to Joey & Darlene's in Georgia on June 7th.

Thanks for checking in!  Peace & hugs!!  God bless!!

Memorial Day Blessings...

I am enjoying my long weekend but am remembering those who sacrificed all so that I can be enjoying this long weekend.

Many blessings to you all on this last Sunday in May!

We are off to church this morning and have Helen & Cheryl for lunch afterward.

Saturday 9... God Bless America

Thanks to our Saturday 9 hostess, Crazy Sam Winters, for this week's 9 questions!  You can join in
HERE.

Saturday 9

God Bless America

Saturday 9: God Bless America

Unfamiliar with Deanna Durbin's rendition of week's tune? Hear it here.

Memorial Day is the federal holiday designated to honor American service people who died in battle.

1) Memorial Day was introduced after the Civil War. Originally called Decoration Day, this is when memorials, as well as the graves of veterans, are to be decorated with flags and flowers on this day to show our appreciation. Is there a war memorial in your neighborhood?  Not in my neighborhood and they removed the Confederate soldier memorial from our central park. Ridiculous.

2) Andrew Johnson, our 17th President, was in office the first time Memorial/Decoration Day was celebrated. Have you ever met one of our 45 Presidents?  I have never met one of our Presidents in person, but I was close enough to smell Trisha Nixon's perfume when I was on a White House tour and she walked through with her Secret Service guys.  I also met Sara Palin in person at a leadership conference, in 2013, at Southeastern University.  I even made her laugh because her daughter was on Dancing With the Stars and I told her I voted for Bristol.  She is a little person and had on FIVE-inch heels!!  That's as close as I've come to any politicians other than some of our locals here in Lakeland.

3) According to the AAA, more than 30 million Americans will hit the road this weekend and drive more than 50 miles. Will you be traveling far from home this weekend?  We are not planning any road trips during this holiday.

4) Memorial Day kicks off the summer season. What's your favorite picnic food?  I like ALL picnic food, for goodness sake!  Hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, deviled eggs, baked beans... don't forget the watermelon and homemade ice cream!  I mean, come on!!

5) As you answer these questions, is there an air conditioner or fan on?  Both!

6) Though she's belting out one of America's best-loved patriotic songs, Deanna Durbin was born in Canada. Is there anyone in your family or circle of friends who wasn't born in the USA?  Joe's dad and his grandparents on both sides were born in Italy. We have several Canadian friends who live here in Mas Verde.

7) No longer a household name, Ms. Durbin was once one of the biggest stars in the country. One of her most popular films was 1937's One Hundred Men and a Girl, which was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Recommend a movie that you really like, but don't think many Saturday 9ers have seen.  I am pretty sure I blogged about it months ago, but we stumbled upon "The Killer Donuts" while channel-surfing one evening and watched the entire movie. It was campy and hilarious!!

8) Back in 1938, Deanna Durbin had her handprints cemented in front of the TCL Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd. Have you ever visited that Los Angeles tourist attraction?  I have never been to California nor do I have any desire to visit California.

9) Random question: What food did you hate as a child, but enjoy now?  There were no foods I hated as a child. We were good eaters and that includes all the vegetables my dad grew in the garden.  He was a hunter, so we also had venison and rabbit now and then. I only get picky about anything slimy or rubbery... okra, snails, oysters...

Thanks for your visit!!  Peace & hugs!!

God bless!!

Friday Photos...

Posting a few photos from this week.  Old habits die hard and I thank Debbie for starting the Friday Foto sharing!!

This is the front of the doctor's office, where I work part-time.
Every now and then I would catch movement in the window and finally
caught a sandhill crane walking by - and looking in! LOL
This photo is bad because of the dark trees, but he is right under my lettering.

Going to the house from the front gate at the farm (Joe's client).
The cattle were everywhere!  I love it!!

Of course, I had apples and carrots for the birds and horses.
These three are my snack buddies!!

I gave Arya an apple slice. She carried it around, then dropped it.
Fruit is not her thing!

We get this at Mazzaro's Italian Market whenever they have it.
We first encountered sweet blood oranges when we were in Italy.
SO good!!  Grab some if you ever see it in the jelly aisle!

Back to the sandhills. They were out as a family of three when I left
the office yesterday.  The photos aren't great, but I was happy to see
them together. I'm sure there was a fourth one at some time and
am sad to think about what might have happened to the other baby.
I always see them as a family of four.

They wander along the sidewalk at the business condo, The one, above, was
off to the right of our front door and the other two (can only see one) were off
to the left of our front door.

A few minutes later, I was leaving, and there they were, in the
retention ditch by the BUSY highway.  Crazy birds!

I am thrilled to have four days off!! We have errands to run, Helen and Cheryl are coming over after church on Sunday for pulled pork BBQ and our community is having a pot-luck lunch on Monday. They will provide hotdogs, hamburgers, and ribs while everyone else brings sides. I'm making a broccoli/rice casserole.  We are sharing a table with Al & Theresa and Mic & Laura. It will be great fun!!

Thanks for your visit today!!  Peace & hugs!!

God bless!!

Thankful Thursday...

Thank you, Rebecca Jo, for hosting Thursdays full of blessings!  You can find Knit by God's Hand and join in HERE.

** I am so thankful to be married to my best friend who gets me, puts up with me, and loves me.

** I am thankful for my faith in Jesus Christ.  It is everything to me.

** I am thankful for my family! Oh my goodness, I am so blessed.

** I am thankful that my knee surgery is finally scheduled.  The cortisone hasn't kicked in yet, from Monday. Perhaps it just won't work for me anymore. I am tired of the pain and the doc even shared with me that when you wait too long, your legs start to bow. Mine are bowing. My new knee will make my right leg longer than the left because of that. Glad the second knee will be done three months later. Sigh.

** That said, I am thankful for my prayer partners/warriors!! I am thankful that I found Dr. Bernasek, thanks to our nephew, Sean.

** I am thankful for my part-time job, but am happy to have settled on a 'retirement' date.  More later!

** I am thankful for each of you!

** I am thankful and happy to have a four-day weekend ahead!!  Hooray!

Do you have plans for the weekend?  Thanks for your visit today!!

Peace & hugs!  God bless!!

Road Trip Medley...

Everything below this line is from the National Day Calendar website.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NATIONAL ROAD TRIP DAY – Friday Before Memorial Day

National Road Trip Day - Friday Before Memorial Day

NATIONAL ROAD TRIP DAY

The Friday before Memorial Day is declared National Road Trip Day and serves as the official kickoff of the summer road trip season. With two-thirds of leisure travelers (64 percent)* planning to take vacations this summer, it’s clear that the open road calls when long weekends and Fridays roll around. We pack up, fuel up, stock up and then crank up the tunes. In fact, 63 percent** of road trippers say that having good music, audiobooks and/or podcasts to listen to are the most important parts of a successful road trip. Additionally, three in five road trippers (59 percent) say that having good snacks and drinks for the road, finding great places to eat on the way and finding clean bathrooms to use while traveling are their most important parts of a successful road trip.
Whether we’re seeking adventure, visiting family and friends or making a business connection, road trips are often a rite of passage. Sometimes we endure them, often hearing, “Are we there yet?” And other times we never want them to end; sometimes getting lost can be even more fun than the original plan.
Getting ThereRoad trips that begin and end with happy passengers are always the best. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.
  •  Plan ahead. Even a spur of the moment trip requires a little planning.
    • Two in five (42 percent) road trippers find travel apps very helpful when planning their trip, and mapping out your stops ahead of time can be a great way to save both time and money.
    • One way to do so is with the Pilot Flying J app’s enhanced trip planner feature. The trip planner helps users create their route and find Pilot and Flying J locations along the way, showcasing specific amenities, fuel prices and more.
  • Vehicle maintenance is vital to any successful road trip. Beyond the routine maintenance like oil changes and sound tires, other simple checks will keep you on the road.
    • check your wipers and wiper fluid
    • make sure your spare tire and jack are in place
    • all lights and signals are working
    • condition of your brake pads
    • registration is current or not about to expire
  • Plot your course. Consider construction, fuel and snack stops, shopping and the interests of the other travelers.
    • Road trippers prioritize convenience and efficiency, primarily (58 percent) wanting to stop at all-in-one rest stops (offers gas, food, drinks, coffee, bathrooms, and more.).
    • Specifically, the top “road trip essential” snacks are chips and salty foods (52 percent), freshly made, grab-and-go foods (50 percent) and fast food options (49 percent).
How do you travel? There are two kinds of people who take road trips. If you’re going together, you might want to discuss a compromise before hitting the road! The tourist takes their time getting there and doesn’t mind taking backroads to see long-forgotten ghost towns. On the other hand, the pilot enjoys seeing the country from the car, sets a course and frowns upon unscheduled stops or side trips.
No matter the destination, road trips include an element of expectation, and they rarely disappoint. The best road trips bring us closer to people over a stick of beef jerky and car karaoke. They connect us to places through memories, a postcard, and the kindness of strangers.
______________________________________________________________
Everything above this line is from the Natonal Day Calendar website.

I decided to skip ahead to Friday for today's Medley.  It IS a holiday weekend for us in the USA and lots of folks do take road trips on long weekends.  Let's see where we can go with this one!!

1.  Have you ever done a spur-of-the-moment road trip?   We have done a few spurs of the moment DAY trips. Longer ROAD trips require some planning, from my perspective.  Where did it take you?  The last one was an hour away in Ona, FL.  We visited Solomon's Castle which is in the book of Weird Florida places. We loved it and have gone back a few times.

2.  If time and money wasn't an issue, what roads would you choose to travel and how long would you be gone?  I would take at least two months and travel as many back roads as I could, first heading west, then circling around heading east before heading back to Florida. No schedule, no destination... just drive and see what there is to see in this great country!  We would, of course, call ahead to blogging friends along the way so we could meet in person!!  (We don't camp, by the way.)

3.  When you go on a long road trip, what snacks and beverages do you take?  Do you pack a picnic? Does the back seat turn into a nest?  We take things totally unhealthy, like candy (licorice, chocolate), chips, pretzels, cookies. Sometimes we throw in a banana and/or apple.  We take water for me and Propel for Joe. Sometimes we add a couple of sandwiches, but we prefer to stop for meals to rest a bit and relax. My favorite thing is to leave at 3:30 a.m. and stop for a good breakfast around 6:30.  We hang clothes on a bar across the back seat, but we do nestle a cooler and a couple of totes in among the clothes.

4.  Please tell us about something interesting or strange you have seen on the side of the road. It wasn't really by the side of the road, but it was very strange to be driving south on I-75 during the evacuation order for Hurricane Irma (2017) when everyone else was headed north, out of Florida. We were nearly the only car headed south.  I'm sure folks going north were wondering what the heck we were doing, driving into a hurricane.  We needed to get home to secure the house and gather the cats and get to Helen's house for safety.  We had been visiting family in Ohio.  That traffic headed north was sitting still and we were speeding along at 75 mph.

5.  Who does the driving when you head out in the car? Over our 34 years, Joe used to do all the driving, then we started sharing the driving, and now I do all the driving. I don't mind driving, but am happy to be a passenger when it is offered. Do you stop in the rest areas along our Interstate highways when you have to use the facilities, or do you choose a fast-food restaurant or gas station instead?  Sometimes we do stop at a rest area but we prefer a fast food restaurant.  Joe will use a gas station, but not me!  We actually call the 'stop',  time-for-a-McPee since we usually stop at McDonald's.  Not TMI... inquiring minds want to know!

6.  Please share something with us about your week so far. If you missed my blog on Monday, I will repeat my request for prayers going forward. My knee surgery is scheduled for August 27th.  Please include the surgical team and Dr. Bernasek in your prayers!!   I also went ahead and scheduled the second knee for November 21st.  My doctor wants his patients to use home therapy/therapists rather than go to a facility. That makes me happy!
My doctor will use the ATTUNE knee replacement system.

Thanks for your visit today and if you answered on your blog, please link up with other Meddlers below so we can visit each other!!
Peace & hugs!  God bless!!
