Sunday (New Year) Blessing...

I had a lovely lunch with my grandkids yesterday!!  Pat and Cheryl went out and about with their kids and aren't back yet.  I think they were going to Crystal Springs to see manatees.  I'll be excited to hear about it when they return.  They are going to church with the kids today but want to come with me next Sunday!!  I will post photos for Monday's Weekend Recap and leave you with this blessing for today (and into the New Year!)...

Peace & Hugs!!

Praise God from whom all blessings flow...

The Saturday 9...

Crazy Sam gives us the questions!  Thanks, Sam!  Y'all can join in HERE!

Old Me

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9
questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to
answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!

Saturday 9: The Old Me (2020)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

We're bidding adieu to the old year with a song
about looking back.
Thanks for participating in Saturday 9 during 2023.

1) In this song, the lead singer thanks his younger self for everything he learned from past experience. What's something you learned in 2023?  I didn't learn something new as much as something was just reinforced for me more than once.  I have family and friends around me who care.  I say it often and I mean it sincerely... I am blessed.

2) He admits he did some things he wished he hadn't. Did you do anything in 2023 you wish you could take back?  Not that I can think of.  I hope I didn't leave anything hanging out there that I should apologize for.

3) This music video consists of old photographs. Do you have many photos lingering on your phone or camera? Or are you prompt about downloading them?  My phone automatically downloads to Google Photos so I don't have to worry about them on my phone.  And yes, I have thousands of photos on my phone and laptop.

4) This week's featured artist is 5 Seconds of Summer, a band from Australia. Have you ever been to the land down under? If not, would you like to go?  I've never heard of that band.  I've not been to Australia.  If someone was paying for the trip, I could be ready for it but it is not a place I have ever really thought about visiting.  It would have to be first class on the plane. It is a very long ride.

5) In 2020, when this song was popular, "murder hornets," aka the giant Asian hornet, were spotted for the first time in the United States. Are you afraid of bugs?  I am not afraid of bugs but I hate bugs and it doesn't bother me to kill them.  I am allergic to wasp stings so I do have cans of hornet killer that shoots the poison 10 feet.  I kill with glee, actually.

6) Enough about 2020! Let's look back on 2023. Did you travel this past year?  Not far.  I think the five hour trip to my sister's house was the longest.

7) What was the biggest purchase that you made in 2023?  A new compressor for my car's AC system. Ouch.

8) What was your favorite book of 2023?  Janet Evanovich's  #30 Stephanie Plum book.  I have actually tossed out lots of books recently (deleted from my Kindle) because I couldn't get past the first few chapters.  If a book doesn't grab my attention quickly, I just can't keep going.  I read for entertainment and prefer good mysteries/detectives.

9) What are you looking forward to most in 2024?  I want to get some updating done in the house, including finding out why I have a small leak in the ceiling of my lanai.  The wallpaper (I hate wallpaper) is curling in the guest bathroom and I need to get the carpets out of the two guest rooms.  Working on a plan.

I am writing this at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.  Cheryl and Pat are just arriving in Lakeland and will stop at Justin's to drop off the puppy, Michelle, and Oliver before coming here.  I told her to enjoy the family and come when they want to get settled here.  I am off to Punta Gorda tomorrow for lunch with the grandkids!!  So excited!!

Peace and Hugs!

On Jordan’s stormy banks I stand, and cast a wishful eye
To Canaan’s fair and happy land, where my possessions lie.
All o’er those wide extended plains, shines one eternal day;
There God the Son forever reigns, and scatters night away.

Friday Fotos...

I have a few photos from Christmas to share.  I didn't take many but want to document the holiday with a few.

Tammy (my youngest sister) went to church with me Sunday morning and we returned for the Christmas Eve candlelight service.  It was beautiful and this picture doesn't do it justice.  We sang lots of Christmas hymns which is always fun and meaningful.

My house for Christmas dinner started at 2:30 and we had appetizers and cookies, etc., before the meal at 3:30.  I have the best neighbors.  I made the ham, Au gratin potatoes, a pickle plate, deviled eggs, rolls, and made a red velvet cake.  Anne and Paul brought sweet potatoes and a cheese and crackers plate.  Duane and Marlene brought a corn dish.  Dee and Bill brought a salad and ice (my ice maker is broken).  Cheryl brought rolls and a pecan pie.  Tammy helped me with everything!

Left to right:  Bill, Dee, Duane, Marlene, Anne, Paul, Cheryl, and Tammy

I made deviled eggs and had them ready to move to my pretty glass deviled egg dish.  I intended to add some red and green sugar sprinkles.  If you saw this on Facebook, you know what comes next.  I completely forgot the eggs.  Tammy and I had them for breakfast the next two days, plus ate them with the other leftovers for dinner!

Casper and Vinny have started sitting on me like this while I watch TV in the evenings.  Silly babies.

Full time state employees have today off.  I'm a part time employee with no benefits.  If I don't work, I don't get paid so I am working 8:00-12:00 today.  Our public use area is open so the gates are open and there will be traffic.  My boss is taking me out for a late birthday lunch.  We've been trying to make it work for two weeks.  I am meeting him at Gosh, Asian Bistro, after work.  I am expecting my company to arrive sometime after that.  I got the bed made and the bathroom cleaned for them.  The rest of the house got vacuumed and Swifter mopped so I'm ready for Cheryl and Pat to arrive.

I will be off for New Year's Day and for Tuesday, the 2nd, so it will be a nice four-day weekend for me.  On Saturday, I am meeting my grandkids, Lauren and Tristan, down in Punta Gorda.  Looking forward to it!!  I will work two 8-hour days during the next pay period to make up for my two days off.  I'm a greeter at church on Sunday, and the neighbors (Duane and Marlene) have invited me and another neighbor, Deborah, for New Year's Eve, with an early good night and happy new year.  None of us want to stay up late. LOL

Thanks for stopping by!!

Peace and Hugs!!

In Christ alone, my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm

Whimsical Fashion Fun...

There isn't a linky and there aren't any rules.
Check out the dress and pick the purse the model should carry.
It is all for fun and just a whimsical thing.
Photos are from the Storybook of Dreams and Beauty.

I was looking through the saved fashion photos, searching for a New Year's Eve gown.  This one looks kinda classy and could be worn to a fancy new year's eve event.  Count down on the purses, 1-2-3, and tell us which ones you like best for the dress.  It's all for fun and just a whimsical thing!

My thoughts:  I really like this dress but sure couldn't wear it (maybe 40 years ago!).  As for the purses, I think they would all be fine but I like #3 best for some reason.  What are your thoughts?  Are you going out for new year's eve this year?

Update:  My sister left yesterday morning and arrived home safely mid-afternoon (praise God!).  We had a great time and a lovely Christmas.  I went to work in the morning and spent the afternoon at home, putting Christmas decorations away.

Today, when I get home, I will clean the house.  Blogging (and in person) friend, Cheryl (Sunlit Pathways) and her hubby will be arriving at Hotel D'Orsaneo (winking) tomorrow. They will be bunking here until January 8th so they can visit with their oldest (Justin) and his family who now live in Lakeland.  Daughter Michelle and grandson Oliver are coming with them (and the new puppy).  Michelle, Oliver, and puppy will be staying with Justin and family.  I hope I can join the fun once or twice while they are here.  They are a beautiful family!!

I will post a few photos from Christmas tomorrow.  I have so many blogs to catch up on.  I will be reading, even if I don't leave a comment.  I've missed you all.  The new year is fast approaching!!  Peace and hugs!!

Merry Christmas!

Christmas is upon us!

I wish each of you and your dear ones a very Merry Christmas and many blessings in the new year!!

Advent Theme: Kingdom What a fearful night it must have been, when the Destroyer passed through the city streets of Egypt, taking the life of the first born but passing over every house where the blood of a lamb was shed and displayed. In this ultimate act of terrible triumph, the Father delivered his people and asserted himself as the only ruler of his people. On this last Sunday of Advent, we hail the King and pledge allegiance to his kingdom. Jesus is “the firstborn of all creation,” (Col. 1:15) the promised Son of David, who alone reigns on his Father’s throne. And yet, in beautiful mystery and wonder, Jesus claims his rightful place by becoming the final Passover Lamb. With the thousands of thousands we proclaim, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”

Whimsical Fashion Fun...

There isn't a linky and there aren't any rules.
Check out the dress and pick the shoes you like best!
It is all for fun and just a whimsical thing.
Photos are from The Storybook of Dreams and Beauty.

I was looking for red or green and found this sweet gown.  It's holiday party time.  Count down on the shoes 1-2-3 and tell us which ones you like best for the dress.  It's all for fun and just a whimsical thing!

My thoughts:  The model looks a little scary but the dress is sweet, and it's red.  As for the shoes, you know I'm picking #1 because the heel is lower and it looks the most comfortable.  What are your thoughts?

Peace and Hugs!

Holiday Blessings to you and yours!
The SON is shining!!

PS:  I'm going to take a few days off from Blogger, as are many of you.  My sister has had to postpone her visit because of a medical issue.  She will come down after the first of the year and then we will have our Christmas celebration.  We are both disappointed but my dinner will go on and she will have Christmas dinner with her dear neighbors, Jeff and Amber.  We are both okay with this little disappointment and setback.  Sometimes you just accept what you can't control and move on.  God is always in control.

Next on my list, after I host Christmas dinner, is to prepare for guests to arrive on the 29th.  Cheryl (Sunlit Pathways) and her hubby are coming down for 12 days to visit their son and his family, bringing their daughter Michelle, grandson Oliver, and the new puppy, Toby, with them!!  Michelle, Oliver, and Toby will stay with the kids.  I get Cheryl and Pat here!!  I told them puppy is also welcome but I'm sure he will have more fun with all the kiddos and their pets.  I will get a few pictures to share with you later next week.

I wish you all a very blessed Christmas!!

The Wednesday Hodgepodge...

Thanks to Joyce for today's Hodgepodge!!  Y'all can be a Hodgepodger by clicking HERE!

Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 531

From this Side of the Pond

1. Did you do more talking or more listening yesterday?  Maybe listening won out.  Was it by choice or by necessity?  Yesterday, neither of those.  We have some good conversations at work and we all respect each other's views and experience.  I am blessed to have coworkers who have become friends.  Other times, I do try to listen more than talk.

2. Are you a tea drinker?  Iced tea.  Hot, cold, or both?  Cold.  I can drink hot tea, but usually only when I have a cold.  Flavored?  No. Straight up tea.  What do you like in your tea?  Just some Splenda.  Do you make Christmas tea this time of year?  No. Not even sure what that is.   What time of day do you like to sip your tea?  When I am sick, any time for hot tea.  Iced tea is my drink of choice, always.

3. What's an activity you won't try, an event you won't attend, or an athletic challenge you won't take part in not even for 'all the tea in China'I don't do anything athletic anymore so no to any athletic challenge.  I don't attend many events anymore because I don't like the crowds.  The last "crowd" I was in (Disney) sent me home with covid.  I won't try base-jumping or rock climbing, for sure!  Remember that!!   LOL

4. What's something most people seem to love but is not 'your cup of tea'?  Playing games.  Card games, board games...  I will play but if I never played another game of any kind, I wouldn't miss it.  I enjoy it when I do and like the camaraderie but I really don't care about the game.

5. How does your family celebrate New Year's Eve?   In the old days, Mom and Dad would host my aunt and uncle and cousins.  Speaking of games, Monopoly was always played by us kids.  We listened to Guy Lombardo and watched the ball drop.  These later years... maybe I will watch the ball drop and maybe I won't. Depends when the yawns start and how loud my bed is calling.  I miss Guy Lombardo!!   LOL

6. Insert your own random thought here.  Eggnog.  My heart got all fluttery in Publix the other day when I saw the eggnog in with the milk and creamers.  Joe dearly loved eggnog and drank it (plain with no alcohol!!) non-stop during the holidays, from the first time we saw it in the store.  I can't stand the stuff but he could make a half-gallon disappear in two or three days.  I almost bought some just to have it in the fridge.  One of those silly things that happen now and then.  Some of you know what I mean.  Sigh.  I'm okay and don't mean to be a downer.  That is just the random thought I had.  Time stood still for a few seconds.  It still happens.  Almost three years. How can that be?!

Peace and Hugs!

Have a blessed day!!

Tuesday 4...

Thanks to Annie for today's questions!  You can join in HERE!

Christmas

Hi there. It's time for another of Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4...

Christmas is next week...Let's talk a bit about it, okay?

1. Are you excited for Christmas to come?  Yes, I am!!  This year may be the best one I've had since my sweet Joe died (Feb. 2021).

2. What do you look forward to on Christmas?  My sister, Tammy, is coming.  Helen's niece Cheryl will join us again this year and my neighbors are also joining us!!  Anne and Paul usually go to their daughter's in New York but are staying here this year.  Duane and Marlene usually go back to Wisconsin for Christmas but are staying here this year.  Dee and Bill have just been here a year plus a little and they aren't going to family either so there will be nine around my table and I love that!!  I call them my chosen family!

3. What will Christmas Eve find you doing?  Christmas Eve day is Sunday, so we will go to church.  My church is having a candlelight service at 5:30 Christmas Eve.  After that we might have Chinese for dinner.  That was a tradition Joe and I had.  Tammy and I will probably open our gifts to each other. That's what we did last year.  Lots to prepare for on Christmas morning.  We are gathering at 2:30.

4. What will be on the menu for Christmas?   I am doing the ham, au gratin potatoes, deviled eggs, a pickle plate, a red velvet cake, and the rolls.  Cheryl is bringing a pecan pie.  Anne is bringing an appetizer plate and sweet potatoes. Dee is bringing a salad and ice (my ice maker doesn't work!).  Marlene is bringing a green vegetable.  I think we will have plenty!  I have plans to bake some cookies this year so there will be cookies, too.

Since Christmas will come before the next Tuesday 4, I (Annie) wish you a blessed and very merry Christmas.  Annie, I wish the same to you and yours!!  Merry Christmas!

Peace and Hugs!!

Have a blessed day!

Monday's Weekend Recap...

Rain, wind, rain, wind, more rain, some wind, then even more rain....

The sun didn't shine again until nearly 4:00 p.m. yesterday.  We are not used to gray days and relentless rain.  Goodness, it's been wet here!!

I canceled my hair appointment for Saturday morning because I didn't want to go out in that mess.  I got my cleaning done instead.  I also made my corn casserole and went to Mas Verde's Christmas potluck party Saturday evening.  I sat with Tim and Judy, Jim and Joan, and a few others.  There were over 150 people.  The HOA provided turkey and ham, mashed potatoes, dressing, and gravy. We all brought a dish to share and the tables were heavy with the bounty.

All of the tables had a little Christmas tree in the center for decorations.  They were all a bit different.  This one was on our table...  It was decorated with shells.

It took a photo of the room before they began calling tables to get in line for the food.  Our table was one of the first three to be called!!  My plate was too full and then so was I.  I didn't even go back for dessert.  We were very well fed.

It was very nice but was so hot in the room.  After we ate, I stayed for a few more minutes but made my good-byes and went home.

Sunday school and church and my usual laundry yesterday. After church, I went to Sonny's BBQ for my free birthday dinner.  Sonny's gives a sandwich, a side, and a beverage for your birthday!  Most places offer an appetizer or a dessert with the purchase of a meal. Sonny's gives you an entire meal!!  Sign up for it if you have a Sonny's near you!

I'm working two full days, today and tomorrow, so I can have Christmas day and the 26th off. My sister arrives this week (not sure which day yet).  My cleaning is done, my packages are wrapped and I think I'm ready!!  Let's get this week started!!

Peace and Hugs!

Blessings of the day!

The Third Sunday of Advent...

Week Three: December 17-23 Advent Theme: Law Before Moses came down from the mountain of fire and smoke with the 10 Commandments, the Law of god, Israel saw the power and authority of God plainly in the devastating plagues against the people and the gods of Egypt. It was a clear declaration that Israel’s God was the One True God. On this third Sunday of Advent, we light a candle to honor the law of God. In the law, the Father expresses his heart of righteousness and his holy authority to rule. The Apostle Paul writes that Jesus Christ “being born in the likeness of men… humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even on a cross.” In his life, Jesus perfectly embodies the heart of the Father and fulfills the law, and in his death and resurrection, he triumphs over death and now reigns as the One True God and Savior of all.

Peace and Hugs!

Have a day filled with blessings!

Saturday 9...

Thanks to Crazy Sam for today's questions.  You can join in HERE!

The Christmas Blues

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!

Saturday 9: The Christmas Blues (1953)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Dean Martin sings that the streets are white with snow. Do you anticipate a White Christmas this year?  Absolutely not!!

2) He tells us he's done plenty of window shopping this season. Do you find you're influenced by a retailer's window dressing and store decor? Are you more motivated by price? Or do you do most of your shopping online, making holiday decorations irrelevant?  I haven't stepped into a store this year. All of my shopping has been done online.

3) Dean was born in Steubenville, OH. Though he rarely returned to his hometown, it was in his thoughts during the holidays. Every Christmas he made like Santa and sent toys to hospitalized children in the Steubenville area. Are there toys on your shopping list this year?  No.  There are no little ones except for great-nieces and nephews who I rarely see and don't do gifts for.  The exception is my pen pal and gr-gr-niece Maya.  I have been giving her a subscription to Hi-Lights magazine.  Her mom says she loves it.  We decided to go up to the next age level for her this year.

4) He had fast hands when it came to cards and before he was famous he worked as a dealer in Atlantic City. When you play cards, what's your favorite game?  I am not an enthusiastic game player.  I will play if everyone wants to play but I really am not that competitive.

5) Dean Martin was an avid reader ... of comic books. Especially in bed when he was on the road and couldn't sleep. Much as he enjoyed comic books, he was embarrassed by them. What do you do when you can't sleep?  I rarely have trouble sleeping.  I get up and move to the recliner with a book.

Now let's have a few holiday-specific questions:

6) Every year, the United States Postal Service introduces special holiday stamps. Do you purchase them?  No.  I prefer the American Flag forever stamps.

7) Do you have a funny/ugly holiday sweater?  I have a pretty colorful sweater vest that has bells on it.  It is hanging in my closet but I haven't worn it since I retired from the Museum.

8) Do you wrap your presents or use gift bags?  Gift bags!!

9) We're doing Christmas karaoke! What holiday or winter-themed song will you perform?  Winter Wonderland, Silent Night...  but it would clear out the room, trust me!!

Peace and Hugs!

Have a blessed weekend!
The SON is shining!

Friday Fotos...

I only have one new photo for today's post.  One of my small group members (from church) is a retired art teacher.  She asked me if I would like one of her older paintings for my birthday.  That was a "duh" question!  Of course!!  She does a lot of folk artsy things and this one is so fun!!

I love it and it is hanging in my living room proudly adding a fun pop of color to the room!  And, of course, it is cats!!

I kicked my Christmas preparations into high gear.  My cards are finally done and in the mail.  The little bit of shopping I had to do is done.  Amazon is delivering stuff daily this week. I'm waiting to do major cleaning until closer to time.  I need to go to Sam's Club and Publix but am putting it off until next week. Of course, everyone is probably doing the same thing so it will be a zoo out there, but let's be jolly!!

I don't think I mentioned that I got a title change and an increase in pay at work!  I am now a Staff Assistant rather than an Administrative Secretary.  What I do is not secretarial, so staff assistant makes a lot more sense.  The extra jingle in the pay check will be nice, as well. It's not much more but every little bit helps!

Peace and hugs!

Have a blessed day and weekend!

Whimsical Fashion Fun...

There isn't a linky and there aren't any rules.
Check out the dress and help her decide which purse to carry.
It's all for fun and just a whimsical thing!
Photos are from The Storybook of Dreams and Beauty.

A fun vintage (1950s?) holiday party look.  She just needs a purse!  Count down 1-2-3 and tell us which one you like best for the dress!  It's all for fun and just a whimsical thing!

My thoughts: I had one of those slips that made my dress stand out like this one.  They were itchy and not easy to sit down in.  Maybe this redhead will just be dancing the night away.  I am choosing #3 for her to carry.  What are your thoughts?  Thanks for joining in!!

The Wednesday Hodgepodge...

Thanks to Joyce for today's Hodgepodge questions!  You can join in HERE!

Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 530

From this Side of the Pond

1. Oxford's Word of the Year for 2023 is 'rizz'. Hmmm...before today had you ever heard the word? Do you know what it means? (Apparently it's short for charisma) Have you ever used the word? If you were in charge of the world, what word would you declare word of the year for 2023?

I had not heard the word "rizz" until I saw this online a few days ago.  If I were in charge of the world, I would make PEACE be the word for 2023.  It's not a new word but we need it so badly!!

2. What's one word you tend to abbreviate in your writing or speech? (as in rizz for charisma)  I abbreviate appointment (appt) often, and those of us who live in Lakeland know what Lkld means.

3. Are you a Hallmark movie watcher this time of year? What's your favorite character from a holiday- themed movie, book, or TV special?  I am not a fan of Hallmark movies.  Perhaps I should watch another one but my previous experience is that they are all basically the same outline making no surprises or anything really compelling because you know how it will end.  Sorry. I'm most likely alone in my thinking.  I quit reading Stephen King and Dean Koontz for the same reason.  They may have changed as well.

4. Something you look forward to eating this month?  Too many sweets, ham, red velvet cake... (my mom always made red velvet cake for Christmas). This was a few years ago...  it's a favorite and I will make one this year.

5. What's the most stressful part of the holiday season for you?  Spending money.  I love giving and just haven't been able to give like I want to. Family and friends understand but that doesn't make it hurt less.  Like the little drummer boy, I give what I can with love.

6. Insert your own random thought here.  I'm so excited about Christmas dinner and am happy I can be the hostess and so look forward to having my dear friends and my dear sister here for the holiday.  Food is a love language and I can do food!!

Peace and hugs!

Wishing you blessings today!

No Tuesday 4 has posted...

Since I don't have the usual meme for Tuesday, I will just say that my birthday was celebrated well yesterday!  I was blessed by so many wishes, gifts, cards, phone calls, texts, dinner out...

Dinner out at Longhorn with Dee and Bill was so fun and I didn't get a photo.  Didn't even think about it because we were talking and laughing so much.

Thanks to all for the good wishes!!  I am blessed beyond belief!

Peace & Hugs!

Wishing you a blessed day!

Monday's Weekend Recap...

I had a fun weekend that started on Friday, at work.  We had a pizza party for my birthday and a co-worker's.  The boss bought the pizzas and I took in cake.  Another co-worker brought iced tea and lemonade.  Of course, the most fun was the camaraderie.  I am so blessed.

Saturday was my church's Christmas party/dinner.  The church bought the meats (turkey and hams) and I baked two of the hams for us.  I also took in a dessert.  It was so well attended that we had to add seats.  We had a Christian comedian who performed for us.  He had us all laughing.  His name is Mike Williams and HERE is his website.  It was a wonderful evening.

This is our sanctuary...

The tables were lovely...

This is the tree in our gathering area...

Joe and I contributed an ornament for the tree the year we joined...
I always look for it.  So special to me.

Sunday school and church yesterday.  It was our communion Sunday, which is always so special.  I got home and did laundry and started working on Christmas cards.  I got a phone call from my sister, Patti, so we got caught up on everything and more!  (Love you, Sis!)

Another week ahead.  Time is flying!!  I have invited my immediate neighbors for Christmas dinner and they have all accepted!!  There will be nine at my table and I am beyond excited about it!!

Well, today is my 72nd birthday.  My neighbors, Dee & Bill, have invited me for dinner at Longhorn Steakhouse this evening!  How great is that?!  I feel blessed over and over by my family, friends, and dear neighbor friends.  I will get a picture!!

Peace and Hugs!

Wishing you blessings today!
