Cronin's Key #1

Cronin's Key

Rate this book
NYPD Detective Alec MacAidan has always been good with weird. After all, his life has been a string of the unexplainable. But when an injured man gives him cryptic clues, then turns to dust in front of him, Alec's view on weird is changed forever.

Cronin, a vampire Elder, has spent the last thousand years waiting for Alec. He'd been told his fated one would be a man wielding a shield, but he didn't expect him to be human, and he certainly didn't expect that shield to be a police badge.

Both men, strong-willed and stubborn, are still learning how to cope with the push and pull of being fated, when fate throws them another curveball.

Rumors have spread quickly of turmoil in Egypt. Covens are fleeing with news of a vampire who has a talent like no other, hell-bent on unleashing the wrath of Death.

Alec and Cronin are thrown into a world of weird Alec cannot imagine. What he learned in school of ancient pharaohs and Egyptian gods was far from the truth. Instead, he finds out firsthand that history isn't always what it seems.

In the 8th century on a battlefield in Scotland, a man dies and a vampire is born.

Cronin has spent nearly 1,300 years waiting for his Fated.

But when Cronin, who's a GINGER, y'all, meets his mate, his One, the man is sarcastic, interrupts him, and questions everything. What’s a vampire to do?

Ailig, who goes by Alec, is a modern-day NYPD cop who watches a man turn to dust in his arms. A bullet aimed at his heart hits him in the leg instead. He is rescued from drowning by a man who vanishes.

Alec is different. And on the day he meets Cronin, he understands why.

This book takes place over the course of a few days. Cronin, who has some awesome vamp superpowers, and his closest friends, Jodis and Eiji, discover that something is brewing in the vampire world, something dark and sinister, another plague to wipe out the human population.

To save the world, they must find the Key.

I loved the mystery, suspense, and action in this story. I am not an Egyptologist by any means, but I’ve always been fascinated by history.

Walker clearly did her research on the mythology of ancient Egypt, and I got a kick out of human historical events translated into vampire lore.

Even as Cronin and Alec explore their new relationship, events take a dangerous turn.

I liked the politics of the coven and was very sad about the coven’s loss at the end. This was almost brushed aside, and I felt like it deserved more page time.

The secondary characters add layers to the story: Eiji, a Japanese vampire who was turned in the 3rd century, is witty, loyal, and a big tease; Jodis, Eiji's mate, is a kind, kick-ass Nord; and Alec’s dad, Kole, is cool with Cronin being a vampire since Cronin is Scottish.

Damn right. The man has his priorities straight.

There is a long, slow burn as Alec and Cronin get to know each other. Let me rephrase that: It’s long and slow for the READERS, as the steam doesn’t come until 60 percent, but it’s still a fast leap into love for the MCs.

I’m down with that though. It’s Fate, people. FATE.
Alec pressed his lips to Cronin’s. “If it were my choice, I would choose you. A thousand times over."

Also FANGS.

And once these boys get started, oh yeah, things get dirty, and the fangs come out.

Cronin's Key is told in a dual third-person POV, my favorite narrative style. I liked being privy to both men's (technically, vamp and man's) thoughts.

The ending is a very strong HFN. I’m not going to call it a HEA, because a plot point is left open. Alec and Cronin are SOLID, however. Their love is a forever kind of deal. But there is more to their story.

I was going to read this book no matter what. Because. It’s N.R. Walker.

But I was unsure how Walker’s sweet, contemporary style would translate into blood and biting.

This book is grittier and sexier than the author's Red Dirt Heart series, but don't expect Anne Rice.

These vampires are (mostly) nice. Rogues remain, though, like the power-hungry vamp in Egypt, a wannabe queen, who will do anything to possess the Key . . .

But never mind THAT.

Hey, there is BLOOD, human blood.

No, these vamps do not drink animal blood (and thank the fuck for that), but they also make ethical choices for their meals. This was actually a little disturbing, but I so prefer it to sugarcoating.

There is an edge to the story, but the tenderness and humour remain.

I love Alec and Cronin. It’s going to be a long wait for book two.

BRING IT.

Uhh hee!

It's okay to be jealous.

This was my first published book from N.R. Walker, and I wanted it to be a slam dunk! My friends are all HUGE fans of hers, and with vampires and that hot guy on the cover, I figured nothing could go wrong.

And it isn't that this book wasn't good, it just is that it wasn't GOOD .

The story is an interesting mix of insta-love and slow burn. The guys are fated mates, and when they get together, they feel a HUGE pull towards one another. Feelings of mega attraction and need overtake them. However, just because they know they are destined to be together doesn't make it easy. They still fight and get to know one another a bit, trying to test the limits of the bond and get a feeling for their relationship. But even with a little tug back, you know that they are going to end up being one of those super intense, in love couples.

I guess my problem stems partly from the fact that I was "meh" about Cronin and Alec together. They made a good enough couple, but I wasn't blown away by their chemistry. I'm not sure if it was the insta aspect, but I just wasn't in the groove with them.

I also found this book to be a little... didactic. Sure, the author had some cool ideas about vampires and their roles in history, but it was a little info-dumpy and boring, to be honest. It felt dry at parts, and I had trouble staying focused on the story.

I liked parts of the story, to be sure, and while it was mildly enjoyable overall, I won't be shouting its praises from any rooftops.

The ending is a uber-mild form of a cliffhanger, but we see a pretty satisfying HFN. Cronin and Alec are a sure-thing couple, and the next book will most likely just continue with them on some more adventures. However, I don't think I'll be tuning in.

Hello? I was told there would be zombies!! Where the fuck are they?
This is the worst apocalypse ever.
No, I'm not even talking about the book yet. All of my reviews will start with me bitching about the apocalypse we have going on here in real life. It totally sucks!
I was expecting cool goth clothes, weapons, zombie-killing, and a rebellion I could join. Instead I'm not even wearing new pajamas. They are yesterday's. The only thing I'm killing is time as I turn into a zombie from Netflix binging all day. It's boring! And not nearly as much fun as promised in movies and books.

Okay, so this book was me trying to live up to my son's expectations when he walked by me and said, "What are you reading, mom? Gay vampire cyborgs in space?" Damn, I love that kid! He just gets me. So, I tried, and I'll keep searching for that perfect book, but instead I settled for this gay vampire mummy book. I mean, mummies? That's new. I'm all in.

Yeah, I have a feeling I know what everyone's Halloween costumes will be this year.

The book starts out rough. I mean, really rough. Like, "who wrote this, a monkey who loves gay vampire mummies?" kinda rough. But, the writing smooths out in the middle somewhere. Or, I don't know, maybe I just stopped caring. Or, that monkey took some writing classes.

Okay, maybe I need to cut back on the chill pills.

Either way, it got to be somewhat readable. And, there were vampire mummies, so it lived up to my expectations.

So, I'm off to read the next one.

Before reading:

N.R. Walker does vampires?! *cries* But I don't read books about vampires!

*Looks at cover suspiciously. Pokes it a little.*

But it's Walker. I adore Walker's writing.

*dramatic sigh*

Fine. Fuck it. I'll give this book a shot, but if ANYTHING sparkles, I'm out.

After reading:

*** 4.5 Stars ***

As you can see from above, this isn't a genre that I typically read. However, I was pleasantly surprised by Cronin's Key. There was so much to love about this book: a first-rate plot that felt fresh and original, the idea of fated lovers (one of whom had to wait more than a millennium for the other to be born), the chemistry and banter between Cronin and Alec once they'd met, the "history" that read like a fractured fairy tale, all of the wonderfully three-dimensional supporting characters, and the sweet Gaelic that made my knees and heart and brain pleasantly melty.

My only complaint would be that although the chemistry between the MCs was delightful, it somehow didn't feel quite intense enough for me. I know, I know! That complaint seems ridiculous given all the touching and meaningful glances and endearments and aching hearts when Cronin and Alec were parted for even a handful of seconds, but somehow... it just wasn't as raw as I was expecting a vampire-human love affair to be. In fairness to Nic, I think that my reaction to this has more to do with my expectations than with the writing (the writing was lovely).

But that ending! It totally took me by surprise and then had me squeeing with joy because it means that there's simply got to be a Cronin's Key 2 coming our way. I can't wait! But don't worry friends, the HFN is totally satisfying.

PS: Walker needs to hang on to her editor with both hands - this was one of the cleanest copies I've read in a long time and the pacing was spot on.

This is a buddy read with my lovely friend Chelsea and I am really happy that we chose this book for our buddy read. 💙❤️💜

Alec has been out of place forever and he’s already an accomplished detective at NYPD only at the age of 29. However, he’s an odd ball and not only him but also the entire department is happy with the fact that he works without a partner. Strange things have been happening to him ever since he can remember and he thought he could handle weird. But those weird things became not that weird when he encountered a man with fangs and unbelievably pale skin and another man just vanished and turned into dusts in his hands. When he reported this incident to his chief, everyone from the entire police station thought he has finally gone nuts. However, a man appeared out of nowhere in the restricted area of the police station and both he and Alec just vanished in the thin air.

Cronin has been waiting for his other half for more than a millennia. After waiting over 1300 years for his mate, he astonishingly found out that his mate isn’t a vampire but a human. Just as soon as he found his mate, their entire vampire world is on the edge of war which can possibly wipe out all good empires from the existence and turn humans into just blood banks. And to make things worse, he realized that his soul mate is the “key” for the upcoming war which will decide the fate of both vampires and humans.

I loved how Cronin and Alec first met. The connection and attraction is instant and electric. Despite their connection, it took Cronin a lot to convince Alec to finally accept their bond. The banter between them when they first met was hilarious and witty. The blossoming of their relationship is also sweet and realistic and erotically natural. It’s so romantic and charming to see how Cronin opened up the parts of him which he has never shared with anyone to Alec. And boy, that vampire is macho and very dominant. Me likey! 😁❤️😍 The war and history and the logics of the battle that happened in Egypt is really interesting and captivating. Although the novel is quite slow burn, when they finally get to that, it’s pretty hot. In summary, I really enjoyed this novel and I’m sure to finish all the remaining books in the series.

It has been a special honor to be able to do my VERY first buddy read with Ka-Chelsea for she’s one of the sweetest, friendliest and wittiest people I’m blessed to be friends with. 😊💜😘 Love you gal .. and can’t wait to continue to do buddy read with you for other books. 😉

Oh man....this book!

It made me giddy...

I haven't read about vampires since Twilight. Needless to say, I was hesitant going in.

But damn, I loved everything about this one.

That whole fated thing....

I was a swooning fool! All of the looks and touches and intense moments between them. The aches they felt when they were apart. And then when Cronin would talk to Alec in Gaelic....*sigh*. GOT. ME. EVERY. TIME.

Their banter was awesome!

And I never once got bored with all of the historical aspects.

While I'm not super thrilled that this is going to be a trilogy, the ending was very satisfying and left me wanting more. Much, much more!

Loved that little twist at the end!

Well done N.R. Walker, well done...

✅ Mythology and folklore
✅(🆗) Pace
✅(🆗) Romance (kind of insta-love, but slow burn at the same time)
✅(🆗) Plot
✅🆗 Some info-dump

This felt like a loooooong setup for about 15% of action near the end, but somehow I still enjoyed it and I want to read the next one to see what will happen. It was not a bad book, but it was not suuuuper good either, something was missing, and many little details bothered me… Still, I am curious enough about Alec and Cronin’s next adventure to try the second book.

Alec, 29 years old detective in the NYPD is used to “weird things” happening to him since he was a kid. Having a fanged man die and turn into dust in from of him, or having a man appear in the middle of the police station and teleport him away is a whole new level of weird though. Cronin is a millennia-old vampire that has been waiting for his mate for his whole life, and he gets the shock of his life when he realizes that his mate is not only human but also “the key” that vampires need to eradicate the new threat of a self-proclaimed vampire queen who’s been building herself an army in Egypt.

The writing is good overall, but the dialogues felt a little choppy at times, but I think that’s just me being picky. There was banter and humor though and I enjoyed that a lot. The fact that Alec, who worked hard to get where he is right now in his life and his career, just willingly gave everything up without much arguing and sadness didn’t seem that believable. It is explained, but the explanation felt a little weak considering that we are talking about uprooting his whole life: he can’t go back to his house, he can’t work as a detective anymore, he can’t contact any friends he had anymore, and he’s just so chill about it… There were also some info-dumps and drier parts because Alec knew nothing about the vampire world, and everything was explained to him in every other chapter.

The fact that Cronin and Alec have an audience for all their private conversations bothered me too. Vampires in this world have supernatural hearing, so even when Cronin and alec are alone in a room, everyone else in the apartment can hear them. On other occasions, they have conversations about sensible information in front of many people without asking themselves if this is a good idea, simply because Cronin is an elder and no one will dare betray him (I admire his trust in his coven, but still…).

“You know, there’s a joke in there somewhere. A Highlander, a Viking, and a Samurai walk into a bar.”

While this story focuses on the romance between Alec and Cronin, there is also folklore and mythology integrated into the plot and the world-building, and the plot was not solely about romance. It takes a lot of room in the story for sure, but the quest of figuring out how to defeat the evil queen and kill her army is also a big part of the book. The secondary characters are interesting too, and I liked Eiji’s enthusiasm and happy disposition.

“Covens?”
“Yes. Vampire colonies.”
“Are you in a coven?”
“Yes.”
“With Jodis and Eiji?”
“Yes.”
“How many others?”
“Four hundred and fifty-two.”
“Jesus.”
“No, he’s not one of them.” Cronin laughed and Alec balked. “I’m only joking.”
Alec narrowed his eyes at him. “Is that vampire humor?” Cronin still chuckled as he shrugged.

I am a little on the fence about whether or not I enjoyed the romance in this one.
I like Cronin and Alec’s dynamic and interactions, but I am also picky with the “fated mate” concept because it often comes with insta-love. In this case, it was an interesting mix of insta-lust/insta-love and slow-burn.

I liked the fact that while Alec was physically attracted to Cronin, he questioned everything Cronin, Jodis, and Eiji said, he was freaking out about the whole “vampires exist and they do have special powers” situation, which is the only realistic reaction to have in my opinion when you are “kidnapped” by a vampire and your whole world is turned upside down… But then, after spending a few days with Cronin and seeing that he couldn’t resist the physical attraction between them, he just decided to roll with it and accept the insta-love he was destined for, which bothered me a teeny little bit, even though I understand his reasoning in a way and they had good chemistry.

5 “M’cridhe, m’gràdh, gu brath.” STARS!!!
My heart, my love, forever.

description

I can’t say I was hesitant to read this book, because I love this author and I would have read it anyway, but I never expected to love it as much as I did. And, yes, because is PNR. “Cronin’s Key” was such an intriguing read. It was very different from what I usually read and very different from everything this author wrote so far.

Alec MacAidan (or Ailig, his Scottish name) is a NYPD Detective has always been good with weird. But weird becomes something else when he watches a man turn to dust. What Alec doesn’t know about himself is that he was born for something more, that he was born to live another life, that he was born to be with a vampire. Cronin is a vampire who waited for his fated one for 1300 years. He never expected his soulmate to be human, but he is more than smitten once he finds out about Alec and sees him. Alec and Cronin are drawn to each other from the beginning. While Alex accepts very easily what Cronin is, he has a hard time accepting the idea of a ‘fated one’, of a destiny. He struggles with his feelings towards Cronin. He can’t stay away from him, but he knows Cronin tells the truth and they are meant for each other, ionndrainn cridhe.

“I feel safe around you. I don’t know why. Everything in my head should be telling me to run… but it’s not. It’s telling me to stay.”

Alec and Cronin get to know each other a little and Alec finds out more about Cronin his two friends vampires, Jodis and Eiji. As the story progresses they find out Alec is important not only for Cronin, but for all the vampires and humans as well and that he’s ‘the key’. What comes next is a series of events who wowed me in a good way, left me speechless and left me wanting more. Needless to say I’m very happy there will be a second and maybe a third book in the series.

I loved this fast paced, action packed story. Loved it to pieces. I loved everything about it. I don’t know how original the story is and frankly I don’t care. Everything worked for me. The plot is captivating to say the least. Even for me who I’m not so fond of vampires. Yes, I liked Edward Cullen from Twilight, but I cant say he surprised me in any way. Instead, Cronin really did. Maybe because he’s a ‘real’ vampire and he drinks human blood or maybe because he doesn’t sparkle in the sunlight. Hmmm…And let’s not forget that he is Scottish and speaks Gaelic.

Anyways, he was really something else. I never expected him to be so polite, so sweet and so considerate with Alec. He’s so caring and so tender he made me swoon at times. Alex was a great character as well. He’s smart and funny and I absolutely loved his sarcasm. I loved their banter and their teasing. I smiled and grinned more times than I can count. They both were great as individuals and together they were perfect. I truly believed they were fated and I was mesmerized by this aspect of the story. I felt their connection and their chemistry was off the charts. I also loved all their interactions and the way they are with each other warmed my heart.

“Cronin’s chest tightened and his whole body heated. He could taste desire on his tongue and feel it pulse in his groin. Alec’s breaths grew shallow, his pupils dilated, his heart rate spiked, and Cronin opened his mouth, feeling his teeth ready to flex.”

The mystery and the suspense are very well done and grabbed my attention from the beginning and all the details about pyramids, ancient Egypt, pharaohs etc. were simply captivating. The author did a really great job.

The side characters Jodis and Eiji are very likeable and I loved their relationship with Cronin and later with Alec. They were so cute together.

Overall, a fantastic read. I can’t wait for the next book!!

"Alec finally, finally, realized what fated meant.
He wanted to be everything to Cronin. And he would be. Everything he needed, everything he wanted, Alec was it.
As Cronin was to him.
And Alec had never wanted anything more."

“M’cridhe. M’gràdh.” Words he never thought he’d say, words he never thought he’d feel. My heart, my love, forever.

The writing style was great, no doubt about it, but I had to scratch my head for a long time in order to decide on my rating. Saying that I had mixed feelings about this book would put it mildly...

Yes to...

~ the idea behind the story and its execution. NR Walker almost made me believe the Egypt mummies have a whole new meaning.

~ the characters. Well, a powerful and yet at the same time vulnerable century-old vampire and a human who stands up for himself? Sign me up. But I also think there haven't been one single side character I didn't like.

Hmmm to...

~ the narration. I'm on a somewhat desensitization course at the moment in order to find out if it makes me enjoy Joel Leslie's performance more if I listen to more of his audiobooks in a row. Sadly I have to accept defeat because it doesn't seem to work. I'm still torn. I really liked Alec's voice, which sounds pretty 'normal' and he made me laugh at Campbell whose attitude came across priceless, but the accents? Ugh. I didn't like Jodis's voice - it sounded so... strained? I don't know how else to put it. It wasn't fluid, rather as if she had to think about every word she said. JL's Japanese accent did sound more like French to me and Cronin miraculously now and then lost his Scottish accent on the way.

No to...

~ the pace of the story. It took me ages to get into it because it was just so slooooow... Ask Josy, she can confirm that I was a whiny and indecisive b*tch if I should DNF it or not for more than the first half of the story. Fortunately, it picked up after that.

~ the relationship. Was there any at all? Well, I love shifter stories, but what I don't like about most of them is the mated/fated part like it also happened here. It always seems a bit forced to me, as if the feelings are not real and the characters don't have any other choice but to love each other.

Well, two more books to find out if it gets better...

NR Walker,

I'm not big into PNR so although I was excited for this book- I was also terrified it wouldn't be for me. Well, I need not have worried because NR nailed it! What a fan-freaking-tastic vampire story!

-The chemistry between the characters. GAH! The aches when they were apart and the purring! Just the way Cronin and Alec were together!

-Loved the history references.
-The secondary characters.
-Story flow.
-The humor. These two had awesome banter!
-The slow burn was deliciously written.

 photo 13867129_zpsjn0quosu.gif

As for those worried that it is the first book in a series- fret not- this book was nicely wrapped up and simply leaves it open for more.

This was a 5 Star read for me and can't wait for the next book! NR Walker cemented the reason she is an auto-buy for me. No blurb need be read just NR Walker on the cover is enough.

DNF 21%

I started this book on Saturday, only briefly remembered its existence on Sunday and today I just said fuck it. I refuse to have another book lounging on my currently reading list, guilting me with its beady little eyes. I can talk to my mother about why we're not BFFs 5-EVAH like her friends and their daughters if I really want to feel guilty, book!

Anyway, I don't know why I couldn't connect with Cronin's Key. It had many elements I enjoy in a novel: paranormal stuff, soulmate stuff, a cop MC, a ginger MC, a vampire MC, a Scottish MC (three of those are the same person, btw). Also, a vampire history lesson. Which, again, I generally enjoy.

But all I got from it was a big ol'

But I'm still counting it as read. CUZ I DO WHAT I WANT SO FUCK YOU.

I don't know who I'm yelling at. Probably the voice in my head that likes to make up rules like "you can't mark a book as read unless you read at least half of it." What an asshole.

This urban fantasy was perfect for me. It was like it was written specifically to draw me into its vivid world. The mixing of Egyptian history and mythology with vampire lore? Check. A ginger MC who is also Scottish? check. Vampires that are actually vampires? Check check check!

Egyptian history and mythology really lends itself well to reworking into a science fiction / urban fantasy landscape. It's so rich and filled with mystery that with a touch of imagination, you can do so much with it. It was this very thing that drew me into watching Stargate: SG1 and it works equally well here, too.

Alec is a New York City cop and is no stranger to weird. Strange things have happened to him his whole life, so seeing a man turn to dust right in front of him is just par for the course, really. It's a damn good thing he doesn't shock easily, or he would have been in a straight jacket before his 18th birthday.

Cronin is a ginger haired, Scottish, thirteen hundred year old vampire. All his life, he's waited for his fated mate to appear. When he sees Alec, he knows his wait is finally over.

Alec and Cronin are more than drawn to one another. There is more than just fate at work here. They are linked in ways that they barely understand. Well, Alec, anyway. He's kind of new to all this. The world could literally be falling down around them and as long as they are together, they might not actually notice.

But no time for love, Dr. Jones! No. Something bad is brewing, and only Alec can stop it - no pressure. It's just the fate of the entire world on your shoulders. So, next time you think your job is hard, just be thankful you don't actually have to save the world.

I was entirely sucked into this story! (No pun intended...ah, who am I kidding, it was totally intended) . NR Walker, once again, provides a story that is captivating and thoroughly interesting and entertaining. And it only leaves me wanting more!

My heart, my love, forever.
Alec, who's real name is Ailig, is a NYPD Detective. He has seen many weird things in his life, but after a man crumbles to dust in his arms, his life turns into a new kind of weird and unexpectable.

Cronin, a vampire Elder, has spent over thousand years waiting for his fated, Alec. As much as Cronin wants to have a peaceful time with his mate, now that he's finally met him, he's unfortunately not able to do so.

There's a crazy vampire Queen in Egypt, who has a desire to see the end of the human race. Cronin, Alec and a lot of other vampires prepare for a coming war.

The second characters in this story are amazing. Eiji is a cute and joyful Japanese vampire. He has a mate, Jodis. She has a Nordic heritage and she's the one that unintentionally changed Cronin. They both are Cronin's oldest and dearest friends. There's also Kole, Alec's awesome dad. He takes the news about the whole vampire thing even better than his own son.
"Okay. So you kill people for food."
Cronin answered stoically. "Yes. Typically felons and those who intend to harm others, but yes."
Kole considered this for a moment. "But you're Scottish?"
"Yes."
Kole looked at Alec and smiled. "He's a Scot!"
I liked Johan too, even though he didn't appear very often.

The mystery was intriguing and the world building was amazing. I loved the humor and the sweet slow burn between Alec and Cronin. The ending is a HFN. However, it's really satisfying. I couldn't put this book down, I was so drawn into the story. I seriously can't wait for the sequel.

Once Alec gets his head out of his ass these two are a great couple. Alec annoyed me more this time...could have just been my own patience but I wanted to bitch slap him a time or two. He acted like a petulant child. BUT I love these two and I'm sure it will continue to be a favorite read of mine.

Okay, so this is one of those times where I'm screaming to myself, "Why in the hell did you wait so long to read this??" I mean it has everything I love...PNR, fated mates, suspense. My friend Janie read it and told me I'd love it. I snagged it free over a year ago and actually picked it up a couple of times but never made it past the first page. Just goes to show you timing is everything. This time, I was hooked from page one. I've been in a major reading slump lately and this just threw me right out of it. I hear it just keeps getting better.

I loved Cronin. He's all sexy, dominate vampire...yum. He's waited for over a thousand years for his mate. He's so swoon-worthy.
"Please, Alec, don’t ever doubt what you are to me.” Alec’s heart tripped in his chest. “What am I to you?” Cronin’s reply was short and immediate. “Everything.”

Alec grew on me. I was a little irked that he was trying to fight the fate thing. I understand why, but Cronin was just so perfect, I wanted him to be happy. Luckily, Alec didn't resist too long or I might have thrown my iPad and I'm rather partial to it 😂.
"Alec finally, finally, realized what fated meant. He wanted to be everything to Cronin. And he would be. Everything he needed, everything he wanted, Alec was it. As Cronin was to him."

So, on to book 2..can't wait to see more of these two.❤️❤️

Everyone loved it but me. It happens.

I actually did like Alec and Cronin. I just wasn’t interested in the plot at all. I couldn’t get used to the massive info dump and history lesson you had to go through.

I like my books with a little more character development and a little less plot. Because this was all ‘Oh, we have to kill the bad vampires’. And I just wasn’t that interested in it in the first place.

description

I also felt that Alec and Cronin never got to know each other that well. There is a lot of talk about their bond, but I had a hard time believing it. Yes, there were some tender moments and I did enjoy them. But right when I got into it, there was another crisis they had to solve.

I don’t think I will continue with this series. Too much action, too little romance for my taste.

When it comes to PNR, vampires have always been my favorite and this was no exception. I can’t believe I waited this long to read this. And the fact it’s NR Walker makes it even crazier that I waited. I LOVED this book. Cronin is absolutely swoon worthy and sexy AF. Alec took a short while to grow on me but grow he did. Their chemistry is off the charts. The action scenes were on point. I could picture every bit of it in my mind. The secondary characters add amazing layers to the story. It’s one of my absolute favorites by this author. On to the next.

BR with friends - Monday 16th march!

I just was blown away by this book, wasn’t expecting such a fast-paced amazing adventure/tale, this book is so well written that I was compeletly captivated by the plot, such awesome paranormal/vampire world, fantastic characters!! Appealing insta-love and slow burn, amusing humour and sarcasm also I loved all of the Egyptian history that is blended with lots of clever things that made the tale work.

Cronin and Alec … so beautiful ,when they had “their time” … they fit perfectly together!! *sigh*

Ms. Walker you have a stunning talent!!
Can't wait for the next adventure because this one finish with a surprising twist!

This was a good read for me but not a great one though. I liked the characters and I liked the story but the situation for all the speed of events felt very slow in the execution. It felt drawn out to a crawl in some areas that had me struggling to finish it.

I did enjoy the interactions between Alec and Cronin and I think the next book will work better in regards to pacing but we'll see. I am curious to see where the story goes next though.

3-5-star-rating-hi.png (600×108):

Wow...this one is hard one for me to rate. I really liked the world-building and the characters, though there were also some things I enjoyed less.

Seeing that this is the first book in this series, there was a bit of an information dump going on. I didn't mind though, because to it was all very interesting. I loved the mystery and mythology. Also...I love vampires !!!

17417301.gif (500×279)

This book is about Alec MacAidan (Ailieg) and Cronin (no last name like Cher)

Alec has been a NYPD for some time and in that time he has witnessed some very weird shit. To be honest, he has been witnessing weird shit ever since he was a little boy. He doesn't really question it anymore. He has excepted that "weird" just seems to follow him around.

giphy.gif (500×229)

Cronin has been a vampire for more than 1000 years. He and his friends Eiji and Jovis are the leaders of their coven. Vampires all have some special ability and Cronin's ability is that he can leap from one place to the other, in the blink of an eye, taking anyone he wants with him.

tumblr_mwvqu6YnNm1syrodeo1_500.gif (500×280)

For 1300 years he has been waiting patiently for his "fated" one, and guess who that is....... right Alec.

DENSITY_B2TF.gif (478×226)

Of course these guys have instant chemistry, because well.....destiny and fated and mates and all that !! At first Alec isn't too happy about all of this. He can except all the weird shit without freaking out, but he isn't a big fan of having his will being taken away. He wants someone to be with him because they want to be, not because it is written in the stars. But we all know you can't fight destiny, so he starts to fall for Cronin...

tumblr_n32q2vKpKE1rec5nao1_500.gif (500×281)

While these two dance around each other, there are some more pressing matters at hand. Some evil bitch queen vampire is trying to raise an army by resurrecting the dead in Egypt. Only "the key" will be able to stop her. Guess who the key is.....right Alec.

So Cronin, Alec and their vampire buddies are off to Egypt to fight a war.

Like I said....I liked this book but I was a bit disappointed about some things. Cronin being one of them. I like my vampires to be a bit more alpha I think. I was looking forward to some Grrr and Arrrgghh. What I got was a bit of a puppy. Also, a ginger vampire with freckles....No...I wasn't down with that at all !!

latest (406×200)

I loved Alec though. He was the bomb !! I laughed my ass off with all the things he said.

" This is detective MacAiden. I request an APB, I repeat, an APB on a sense of humor. Belonging to a Mr Cronin I-have-no-last-name-like-Cher. Last seen approximately in the year 744. Yes, you heard correctly 744."

The side-characters were also amazing, especially Eiji. I just wished I would have felt more chemistry and love between Cronin and Alec. Something was missing to me. This was a slow build insta-love. I think, because there was so much going on, I didn't get to really know them as a couple. One minute Alec is fighting his destiny and the next he gives up and gives in. The steam was also a bit lacking I think. For how long these two waited to finally get it on...I felt a bit let down. It was hot, but I guess I just wanted a bit more between the two of them.

I am still gonna read book 2 of course, because I think this book was a promising start to this series, so I hope book 2 will be better, now that we have all the information and world-building.

What can I say...I am no usually a fan of historical or paranormal and this one is historical and paranormal but I liked it. I think its Ms. Walker's magic touch.

So the vampires...

I enjoyed reading about the vampire history, although I couldn't help but feeling I have read some of it before... but that's ok.

When Cronin finds Alec... Mmmmm. Really loved these two together. The slow burn, the kissing, the purring and the rumbling, the possessiveness. It was actually what made this book work for me. Oh the sweet romance... I'd love more of this in book two please.

And then the unthinkable...
“Alec looked at Cronin. “Four days,” he whispered. Cronin squeezed his hand and swallowed hard. Almost thirteen long and lonely centuries had come down to just a matter of minutes. “It is too soon.”

And the adventure...

And the passion ...
“M’cridhe, m’gràdh, gu brath.”

Words he never thought he’d say, words he never thought he’d feel.

My heart, my love, forever.”

And the twist... *sigh*

Cant wait for the second book.

Recommended to one who enjoys historical paranormal vampire action romances.

Where is my sexy as hell ginger vampire that's all possessive and growly? I'm waiting Fate....patiently even!

I love vampire books and this was no exception. So great I don't even know where to begin. The plus is that it's a series so there will be more goodness to come!! I'm sure that Ms. Walker is extremely busy, so I thought I would help her out and give her some suggestions for the upcoming books:

Book 2 - Alec can wrap his arms around Cronin's waist and he can leap them both into Carter and Isaac's house. Sammy can play with Brady and fun will be had by all. Who doesn't want to catch up with Isaac and Carter and see where they are in their relationship?

Book 3 - Cronin said that he had a house in London, but why not build a new house in Scotland? Who can help them with that.....let's see...of course, they could leap over to Thomas and Cooper's house and then leap them all over to Scotland. While the house building ensues they would have endless fun together. Alec would be cracking jokes about Tom robbing the cradle and Cooper would say that he was one to talk since Cronin was hundreds of years older. Good times!

Book 4 - After successfully completing the house I think a vacation is in order! What better place to go than....you guessed it....the Outback! Charlie and Travis would be the best hosts ever. Does anyone not want to imagine Cronin riding a horse? NO! The only downside is that Ma might be a little upset that Cronin, Jodis, and Eiji don't want to eat her cooking. I think Eiji and Nugget would become the best of friends.

My work is done. But seriously, back to this book. It was awesome! I loved the building relationship between Cronin and Alec. I know they came together fast, but that tends to happen when couples are fated to be mates and I'm OK with that. I've always said that I don't mind insta-love when it comes to shifters and vampires. It's totally different than two humans. DUH! Plus, Alec was still having troubles accepting all that was thrown into his lap for at least a few days. And how could you not fall in love with Cronin, fated or not, within 48 hours. He's perfect!

Alec's sarcasm was also a plus...very funny indeed.

I loved Jodis and Eiji to. I loved their relationship with each other as well as their true bond with Cronin. Eiji and his toys (guns and arrows) were fun to read about as well. He is a big kid with a great heart.

My one sadness was

I can't wait for book 2. I've said it before and I'll keep saying it...I love N.R. Walker! Thank you for exploring new territory in the paranormal. Great start to the series!

Absolutely brilliant.
This is my first vampire romance and although this will never be my favourite genre, I really loved this book.

Cronin is decidedly swoon-worthy, and the dichotomy between the super strong, powerful vampire and the shy, yet so passionate man is simultaneously attractive and endearing.
But the Oscar for the best character has to go to Alec. HIs sassy, snarky side, his inquisitive intelligence and dry humour, his willingness to believe and accept the weird, the way he takes action when it is needed are all part of an ultimately appealing and heart warming package.

What I adored most in this book is the fantastic banter and the tongue-in-cheek look at the 'lifestyle' of vampires. However, it did bother me on a very personal level that all the vampires' "dinner dates" inevitably end with the death of a human (however horrible they may have been).
But as the general tone of the book is light, I am quite happy to let this point go.

I also really appreciated how the issue "yes, we are fated, but I didn't choose you" was dealt with, and the care both men put into the development of their relationship. As intense and strong their emotions are, neither goes for the inevitable straight away.

All this, together with an action packed plot which holds quite a few surprises, makes for an excellent, highly entertaining read.

Highly recommended.

DNF @ around 80%

So. Back in May, I stopped reading this book at 26%. I figured I was not in the right mood for the amount of fluff present.

Today I was going through a list of books I should read for a challenge, and I found the audio version of Cronin's Key III on that list. So I did a search on Scribd, and found all three audiobooks in the series available. I figured I would have an easier time with audio and I gave it a try. I started listening to the book at around 20%.

My main problem is with Eiji's voice. At first I was amused at how Eiji, supposedly Japanese, sounded exactly like Indiana Jones' kid sidekick. But it grated on my nerves more and more as I listened. I studied Japanese at uni and I had many native lecturers. I have also met a lot of Japanese people at language exchange groups. When not conversing in Japanese, we mostly talked in English. None of them sounded even remotely like what Eiji sounded in this audiobook. What Eiji sounded like was a Hollywood representation of how an Asian person is supposed to sound like, and frankly I find that offensive.

As I said in one of my status updates, if you're gonna do an accent, do it right or not at all.

At around 80% comes a scene where Eiji is excited and is almost incomprehensible. That's when I decided I've had enough.

My rating is purely for narration.

I usually love NR Walker's books, but this one starts extremely boring. Alec's hysterics and disbelief to the supernatural world is so annoying. Maybe I'll give it a chance sometime in the future, now I just don't have patience for it.

BR, March 13th (release-day) with Sonia, Marte, Momo, Susan and Julie.

Very good start of the series.... I'll definitly will be wanting to read more about Cronin and Alec.
They were awesome.. But I do hope Ms Walker manages to lesson the info!!
The information we were getting through out this story was overwhelming. I understand you have to give a lot of info for the series to start but it was a bit too much for me..

Cronin - Michael Fassbender

Alec - Marco Dapper

Alec took Cronin's hand. "I said to you on the second day I was here, I wasn't sure if it weren't for us being fated
that I'd choose you. But you have to know, Cronin, I would. I would choose you."

“M’cridhe. M’gràdh.”
Alec whispered his words back to him, “My heart. My love.”

I have absolutely no idea why it’s taken me so long to read this book. It’s been on my to-read list for ages and I love vampire reads. So why?
Despite having most of this authors books marked as to-read the only one I’ve actually read is the cute and loveable Finders Keepers.
Anyway I digress.
I really liked this book and despite having a couple of issues it worked well for me.

Alec has always been different. He’s always felt someone watching from the shadows, saving him. It’s almost like he had a guardian angel.

So long review short.
Alec is special. He’s had a guardian vampire from being very young. He’s not only Cronin’s fated mate but so much more as well.

I loved the start of this book, how these two met and pretty much everything.

I didn’t particularly like the description of Cronin. I know that’s how the author wanted him but I just couldn’t picture him as ginger with freckles. So I did what I always do when I’m reading a vampire book and the male character doesn’t work for me. I picture Ian Somerhalder and I’m good to go.
I also imagined when I started this book that Cronin would be a strong alpha. He was much gentler than I expected. I imagine this is the author’s style but time will tell.

I personally like the whole fated mates thing. But I did think the book suffered a little from not having Alec and Cronin more together. I appreciate there was a lot of history and a lot of story to get through but this is ultimately a romance and in my opinion it would have benefitted from having them together (hot and sexy) more.

But overall I really enjoyed this read and it’s straight onto the next book for me.

3.5 I cant believe Im giving 3 stars to an NR Walker! This just didn't work for me. I felt no connection between the MCs. The chemistry just felt forced and it was a bit of an instalove for my liking. The story just felt weak, flat and lame to be honest. Sorry :(

**** 4 Key stars ****

A solid first book of a new series from N.R. Walker!

I really liked the characters (and cast),  their interaction and banter, the plot and story. I loved the way history has been woven through the whole story giving a new meaning to

I love these kinds of adventure-action-paranormal stories, and this one really filled the role to the fullest!

I did however miss some, I don't know... "bang"? Chemistry? There was a lot of info dump at the beginning, but I didn't mind that. But I can understand that it could get a bit too much for some. The sex scenes between Cronin and Alec didn't do much for me and they were way too short. I mean, they were hot, but I felt something was missing.

I'm really looking forward to the sequel, which I actually think will be better since all the introduction and "info dump" is already done.

Release date BR with Julie, Susan, Sonia, Momo and Elsbeth.

--------------------------------------------

The cast!

From N.R. Walker's blog post:

First, we have Alec. Alec is a typical 21st century New York City guy, 29 years old, a cop who, in his own words, has always been good with weird.
Then there's Cronin. A twelve hundred year old vampire, quiet and unassuming, yet respected and a little bit (or a lot) feared. He's also the only vampire in all of histories to be fated to a human.
Next is Eiji. Older than Cronin, Eiji is a Japanese vampire who calls himself brother to Cronin. Always smiling, always laughing, Eiji has been one of my most favourite characters to write.
And finally there is Jodis. Roughly the same age as Cronin, Viking by heritage and fated to Eiji. She's a kickass woman who has basically spent the last thousand years keeping the boys in line.

Alec: Marco Dapper
Cronin: Michael Fessbender
Eiji: Takeshi Kaneshiro
Jodis: dunno... anyone knows?
