Right off the start I was rooting for Poesy because no one deserves to be bought and/or sold for any reason, ever. When she bolted from her husband-to-be into Lady Venom's forest, hope bloomed.
Poesy definitely has character growth in this story, as does Lady Venom. Not what I was expecting in a novella, honestly. Usually they're short and sweet, just enough of something to whet your whistle, ya know? However, this one manages to pack enough in so that you can see that growth, passion and HEA.

Yes, he's absolutely confident and take charge but he is such a squish that I found myself doing the "d'awww!" thing sooo many times throughout the book. He is 100% all-in for Valerie, even if she doesn't want anything to do with him.
I wasn't as big of a fan of Valerie's though. I know that she had a reason for being the way she was, but it was rough going through a story with someone so…closed off.
There probably isn't a book that Opal writes that isn't amazing to me. I love her imagination. The world building is phenomenal as well as the character building. The Shadow Hunter is a very long book, but totally worth the read. I'm looking forward already to the next in the series.

Maps are the beginning of great books. Also, flashbacks to the beginning of the strife in the broad storyline are like little candy trails that I just love to follow. Gemini Coven has both!
We start with two maps, of course. The prologue gives us insight into beginning of the Cardinal War. The author left breadcrumbs of this in Pantheon but not a lot and it kind of took me racking my brain to really remember the references. However, now we know a lot more than we did.
It's obvious that there is a set up here for a lengthy series and I'm all for it. This story is juicy enough for that. Trust that if you can suck me into a dark fantasy book, you've got a good plot. I'm just not a fantasy reader. This one has me hooked.
I love the building relationship between all of the characters. It isn't insta anything. It's organic, just like a real relationship (friendship or otherwise) would be. I also appreciate the multiple POV's throughout the book. It gives a more rounded approach to telling the story than single or even dual POV would.
