Null in the void

Null is a being that existed in the void from before the Creation of the World. Whenever lifeforms would appear inside the void, they would quickly be consumed by Null, who wanted the void all to themself.[3] The Golden Goddesses created the lands and skies in order to stop Null.[4] However, Null continued to create Rifts to swallow the world and return it to a void.[5] In response, the Golden Goddesses created the Tris to repair the Rifts whenever they appeared.[6]

Some time before the events of Echoes of Wisdom, Null created a plan to use the Prime Energy, a powerful artifact left behind by the goddesses, to turn the world back to void once more.[7] This plan involved kidnapping and trapping the Tris that had been sealing its Rifts, with the intent being to use their power to create Echoes to summon Monsters. However, the Royal Family of Hyrule passes down a legend, which predicts that a hero and a priestess will appear to defend the Prime Energy whenever it is threatened by evil.[8] Minister Lefte and Lueburry suspect that Null was aware of this prophecy, and they started creating Rifts that targeted children in an effort to stop the hero and priestess from emerging.[9] One of these Rifts successfully captured Link during his childhood. While his time imprisoned in the Still World left him unable to talk, Link could uniquely remember being stolen away after he escaped. He was also able to sense whenever a new Rift would form. He used this ability to fight off the Monsters that Null would summon and rescue people in danger.[10] Similarly, Princess Zelda was captured by an Echo of Ganon. Although she is rescued by Link, he ends up falling into the Still World while doing so.

During her journey, Zelda joins forces with Tri to free the captured Tris and mend the oversized Rifts created by Null. While they are leaving the Still World after mending the Rift over Hyrule Castle, Null breaks down a wall and lunges toward Zelda. At that moment, Link arrives and fights Null off. Zelda reaches for Link so that he can Warp back to Hyrule with them, but he is captured within a Crystal by Null and disappears into the Still World.[11] Afterwards, Null creates large Rifts on Eldin Volcano, in the Faron Wetlands, and on Holy Mount Lanayru, three regions associated with the Golden Goddesses.[12] Once Zelda has mended all of the Rifts in these areas and gained the sanctions of the Golden Goddesses, Null ambushes her again.[13] They create an Echo of Zelda, Tekom, who they intend to use to deceive the Goddesses and claim the Prime Energy.[1][14] However, the Prime Energy splits into thirds when Tekom approaches it, dividing itself among Zelda, Tekom, and Link.[15]

When Tekom returns to Null, Null absorbs her and claims her piece of the Prime Energy as their own.[16] They use this power to create widespread Rifts throughout Hyrule.[17] They then resolve to take the remaining pieces of the Prime Energy from Zelda and Link.[18] After the pair defeat Null, they use Tri's Bind ability to take the Prime Energy from them, and all three pieces of the Prime Energy come back together. Null continues to beg for the Prime Energy, but Zelda and Link use its power to destroy them.[19][20] Afterwards, Tri informs Zelda that Rifts will no longer appear now that Null is gone.[21]

Characteristics

Null prior to absorbing part of the Prime Energy

Null is a formless being, naturally only capable of creating voids in the fabric of the world, which present as Rifts allowing access to Null's realm, the Still World. They are the Boss of Null's Body.

Null, while an intelligent being capable of speech and complex plan formulation, is ultimately very simplistic in desire. Their solitary goal is to return the world to the void state that it was in prior to the intervention of the Golden Goddesses. As such, they have extensive knowledge of the history of Hyrule, allowing them to summon an Echo of Ganon despite the figure being almost completely forgotten by the the time of Echoes of Wisdom.

Prior to the events of Echoes of Wisdom, their kidnapping of the Tris grants them the ability to create Echoes, which they use in the battle against Zelda and Link.

In battle, Null will float around the battlefield using their large hands to attack. Occasionally, Null will summon an Echo of a previous Boss to attack. In their second phase, Null will swim through a side scrolling underwater section, summoning Vocavors to attack by making Whirlpools. For the third phase, Null will go back to the original battlefield. During this phase, Null will sometimes disappear into one of the walls. When they do so, Zelda and Link must defeat all the hands that come out of the wall.

After being defeated, Null will be lying on the ground. Zelda and Tri must use Bind to pull out the last piece of the Prime Energy.

Trivia

  • During the second phase of their fight, Null can only be defeated by an attack at the end of the side-scrolling room. This means that regardless of how much damage is inflicted to Null prior, they will not lose any health.

Nomenclature

The word "null" has several definitions, including "amounting to nothing" and "having no elements".[22] This refers to Null's desire to destroy the world and return it to Emptiness. Additionally, "null" is the German word for zero.

  3. Before the creation of the skies and the lands, there was a void—a vast nothingness. In the void, some things would begin taking form, only to be devoured by the one who dwelt there. The name of this one is Null. Null desired the world in its entirety and consumed all life indiscriminately. — Golden Goddess (Echoes of Wisdom)
  4. We three goddesses could not abide this and created the skies and the lands to contain Null. — Golden Goddess (Echoes of Wisdom)
  5. All the while, Null continued creating rifts, working ceaselessly to return the world to a void. — Golden Goddess (Echoes of Wisdom)
  6. And so we brought forth the Tris to dissipate the rifts, thus keeping the balance. — Golden Goddess (Echoes of Wisdom)
  7. So this is the Prime Energy left behind by the three goddesses. Long, long ago, before time ever was, Null drifted in the void of nothingness. This was a pleasant place for Null. The void needed only Null. All was well and in its right order. Until the goddesses came and created the world, stealing away Null's peaceful void. Null relentlessly tore at the fabric of the world, but the goddesses' servants always repaired it... Until now. Now Null can return things to how they were meant to be—back to nothingness. It is time—time to return all to the void. Back to the state in which Null prospers! — Tekom (Echoes of Wisdom)
  8. There are yet more legends passed down by the royal family of Hyrule... "When evil strives for the Prime Energy, a wise priestess and a courageous hero will appear." "Together, the priestess and the hero will rend this evil asunder." — King of Hyrule (Echoes of Wisdom)
  9. I've talked at length with Mr. Lueburry about why our enemy seemed to target children. As His Majesty mentioned, it appears our enemy knows about the Prime Energy. We're speculating that the enemy may also know about the priestess and hero. And so, perhaps they were trying to ensnare these two legendary figures. At least, that's what Mr. Lueburry and I have concluded at this point. There's much we still don't know. Unless we can confirm things with whoever created the rifts. Whatever the truth, the actions of this enemy are reprehensible. — Minister Lefte (Echoes of Wisdom)
  10. You know how I talked about people being stolen away over the years? Well, there's one story about all that which is pretty unique. At one point, there was a group of children who went missing, but they ended up coming back! Link was one of the kids in that group. Unfortunately, those kids lost a lot in that ordeal. Their memories, their spirits... And they lost the ability to speak. But Link? He was different. While he did lose the ability to speak, he's the only one who recalled being stolen away. On top of that, he gained a special ability to sense when new rifts would appear. So he started using his uncanny ability to head monsters off whenever a new rift would crop up. And he'd also do what he could to prevent others from being taken into rifts. I bet he thinks if he keeps fighting, he might eventually be able to speak again. Through his dedication, he's kept countless people from ending up in rifts. So I'm sure he's also doing this because it's the right thing to do. It isn't just self-motivated. — Lueburry (Echoes of Wisdom)
  11. The king of Hyrule was successfully saved from the Hyrule Castle rift. However, Link was captured by someone after helping Zelda. — Adventure Log (Echoes of Wisdom)
  12. Large rifts have appeared in regions connected to the goddesses who left the Prime Energy. The rifts have shown up at Eldin Volcano, Faron Wetlands, and Holy Mount Lanayru. Stop the enemy's dark plans, and mend the rifts. — Adventure Log (Echoes of Wisdom)
  13. Long have I awaited this moment. — Null (Echoes of Wisdom)
  14. The goddesses have provided their sanctions, so I should be able to approach the Prime Energy. Yes, this identity should suffice. — Tekom (Echoes of Wisdom)
  15. Curse the goddesses! How dare they insinuate that I, a perfect echo, do not have the right! Though, I did receive one... If I can gather the other two...everything is mine. One went to you. And the last one... Could it have gone to him? — Tekom (Echoes of Wisdom)
  16. Ahhh... So THIS is the Prime Energy! I am overflowing with power! — Null (Echoes of Wisdom)
  17. Null is creating massive rifts! The towns... Everyone's being pulled in! — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
  18. I understand now. I understand all that is the Prime Energy! Yet it is insufficient. I hunger for more. I must have everything. I must have all of the Prime Energy... Give it to me! — Null (Echoes of Wisdom)
  19. Give it to me... — Null (Echoes of Wisdom)
  20. Give it...to...me... — Null (Echoes of Wisdom)
  21. Zelda... The rifts will disappear, and your world will return to a state of peace. Me and my friends came here to heal an injured world. Now that Null isn't around creating rifts, everything will be OK. — Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)
