Biography

They are leaders of the Demon King's Army serving Demon King Ganondorf. They are also precursors to the four regional Bosses seen in the "Regional Phenomena" Main Quest in Tears of the Kingdom, but they are capable of speech and have individual personalities. Upon stealing Sonia's Secret Stone, Ganondorf transforms into Demon King Ganondorf and sends countless Monsters to invade Hyrule, precipitating the beginning of the Imprisoning War. He then sends four masses of Gloom from Hyrule Castle to each corner of Hyrule, creating the Archfiends to use their powers to subjugate the Kingdom of Hyrule.[2][3]

The four Archfiends are:

As Rauru, Zelda, Mineru, Lenalia, and the Hyrulean Army try to make their way to safety at the Tanagar Canyon Temple during the Scenario "Striking North", they are ambushed by Grimgera. The Archfiend causes an enormous windstorm, blocking their path forward. While Zelda and Mineru believe they lack the strength to take it on at the moment,[8][9] Rauru states that they have no choice.[10] However, in "The Howling Tempests", the Knight Construct and Calamo arrive and subdue Grimgera with the assistance of Typhan, causing Grimgera to flee.[11]

The next Archfiend encountered is Grimtorok, who is polluting the Lanayru Wetlands with Sludge during "Lanayru Defiled". Rauru's party travels there to aid Qia, newly crowned Queen of the Zora, who refuses to back down after the Forbidden Construct slew the former King and destroyed the Zora village.[12] After defeating Grimtorok, Rauru resolves to assemble an army to defeat the other Archfiends who put the other Regions of Hyrule at risk, joining forces with Qia and the Zora.[13]

In "Under Cover of Mist", Zelda, Qia, and the Goron Chief Agraston venture to Great Hyrule Forest to aid the Rito. Joined by Rito Elder Raphica, they find the Lost Woods under control of Grimgera, but they manage to finally defeat him this time.

After the Gerudo Chief Ardi allies with the Warriors, Rauru grants the leaders of Hyrule's tribes Secret Stones. Alongside Zelda and Mineru, they make a vow to become Sages. The Sages, eager to utilize their newfound power, then head to Seres Scablands as part of "The Counterstrike". There, they encounter Grimgohma. Agraston is determined to defeat him himself,[14] as when the Archfiends first appeared, Grimgohma attacked the Gorons' home at Death Mountain, and summoned Moragia to Death Mountain Crater.[15] The Sages use Ascend to ambush the Monsters and then defeat Grimgohma.

After taking hold of a base in the Depths, Rauru's army heads toward Great Hyrule Forest again during "Fire and Sand" after receiving word from the Rito of another Monster attack.[16] While the forest was laid waste to by the Forbidden Construct, it then left, leaving Grimgibdo to take care of the Hyrulean Army herself.[17] After defeating Grimgibdo and having finished off all four Archfiends, Rauru decides it is time to face Demon King Ganondorf himself.

The Hyrulean Army heads towards Hyrule Castle during "Into the Fray", using the Stormwind Ark piloted by Mineru's spirit. In anticipation, Ganondorf uses Gloom Spawn to resurrect the four Archfiends, warning them not to fail him again.[18] Grimgera ambushes the Sages on the Stormwind Ark as part of "The Archfiend's Return", but he is once again defeated. During the assault on Hyrule Castle in "The Battle of Hyrule Castle", the Army also dispatches Grimtorok and Grimgohma. However, they are unable to defeat Demon King Ganondorf, and they flee in order to bait him to an area of sacred power, the Imprisoning Chamber, in the Depths. As they fall back, Grimgibdo requests to lead the army to hunt them down,[19] which Demon King Ganondorf grants.[20] During "The Battle of Hyrule Field", Calamo, the Knight Construct, and the rest of the Hyrulean Army battle the monsters in Hyrule Field, after which they are ambushed by Grimgibdo. Although they defeat her, in her dying breaths, she ejects one of her claws directly at Calamo. The Knight Construct intercepts this attack, but it is badly wounded in the process.

All four Archfiends also appear in the post-game Challenge "The Archfiend Quartet", though this is external to the main story.

Trivia

  • Some design aspects of the Archfiends, particularly the bodies of Grimgera and Grimtorok, are based on the mummy form of Demon King Ganondorf seen in Tears of the Kingdom.
  • In the original Japanese, Demon King Ganondorf's line when he revives the Archfiends, rendered in English as "No further failures", is "三度(みたび)()いぞMitabi wa nai zo (There won't be a third time)". This may allude to the absence of the Archfiends in the future in Tears of the Kingdom, in which Ganondorf sends non-sapient versions of them to guard the Secret Stones instead.
  • Unlike the corresponding Bosses in Tears of the Kingdom, who create a pink explosion visually similar to Malice when defeated (as with Bosses in Breath of the Wild, where this animation originated), the Archfiends dissipate into Gloom in a similar manner to Phantom Ganons.

Nomenclature

The names of the Archfiends are derived from combining "Grim" with the corresponding Bosses from Tears of the Kingdom.
