Yet more...

This lot are all RAFM. The crazed cultist looking types are Tcho Tcho people; the others from various sets including Lovecraft Country - farmer with staff and pink shirt, policeman and zombie lady with the baby. The man in black type is an investigator from set 2910, the one wearing a hat and has his coat over his arm is a journalist from set 2906, and the Egyptian carrying the box is from the M.U. Expedition to Egypt, set 2970.

With the exception of the cigar smoking Copplestone Bolshevik heroine from set BC17 I haven't identified any of this lot...

More of the Scottish figures - RAFM and EM4

Thought it was about time I started  to record some of the latest figures from Mike. Some of this lot are all 90s RAFM figures from the Call of Cthulhu range, others are EM4 from the Dunwich Detectives range..

A couple of these are from set 2970, Expedition to Egypt. The central figure isn't quite a Pharaoh, but would still serve very well as Nyarlathotep in human form. Mr Muscle is from the Lovecraft Country set.

The guy in the white shirt is from set 2902 'Professor (male). The man with the scroll is another one from the Expedition to Egypt set. One in the middle is EM4.

Not sure where these ladies are from... one may be from 2905 Parapsychologist  (female).  Must check out the online RAFM catalogue instead of the 1994 paper version. (Doing it!) They have more figures listed but no codes and not always in the 'original' sets. For example 'Nyarlathotep' is in the 'Adventurers (assorted) set, and also in the Expedition to Egypt set! (Recheck: All are EM4 Dunwich Detectives)

Not sure what sets these two are from... Update, EM4!

Again few different sets. Back right is from the Police set online. Not sure of the scientist, other 4 are EM4.

What I really need to do is gather all my RAFM figures and the ones from Mike and sort them into their sets. On the other, perhaps not - Mike's are painted to a far higher standard than mine!

Some RAFM Adventurers.

The two men and standing  woman are from the M.U. Expedition to the Amazon set while the sitting woman is from the M.U. Expedition up the Mekong set.

I've gone for eyes plus shading look rather than block colours,

Have to admit I'm quite pleased at how they've turned out.

The intention is to catch up a bit on my 25/28mm pulp figures - they've been sadly neglected lately!

It was always going to end like this...

Even seeing Cthulhu sends men insane... so having him physically attack you... well...

Panic as the tankettes back into each in their efforts to get away...

Cthulhu moves out of the temple as one hapless soldier is run over by a reversing tank.

The monster is big enough to cover both tanks.

They don't survive the encounter!

The remains of the HQ group are the next to fall. Not something to slow Cthulhu's inexorable murderous advance.

Unable to get past the monster, some soldiers flee into the city and are attacked by more cultists.

They are forced back and pass into another chamber.

With a couple of soldiers trapped behind Cthulhu, others facing attack by cultists, and the rest about to be eaten (or something)... things aren't looking good for the Japanese!

Though the ones retreating from the cultists might (?) manage to find a way out of the city.

At which point, perhaps best to draw a curtain over the next part...

The beast awakens

The rest of the force cautiously enters the city while the officer leads his HQ group to check out the temple.

As the officer climbs to the top of a column the force starts moving further into the city.

As he stood there, long tentacles appeared from a well in the temple and snatched him...

It was so quick that noone knew what had happened. The corporal led a couple of men to investigate.

Suddenly a winged, tentacled monstrosity rose up before them.

One brave soldier fired at the nightmare while the rest of the force panicked. Hastily reversing to try and turn around, two of the tanketes colled with each other... (Rolling for combat/morale, I treated each tentacle as separate and with 'god' facing Hordes. One tentacle rolled a 1 as the man it was facing rolled a 6!)

Utter panic as Cthulhu surveyed the scene before him...

Skirmish in the ruins

As the ambushers fire on the Japanese one of the soldiers is hit and falls to the ground.

The Japanese return fire as they face their attackers...

But as their return fire is ineffective and they lose another man, although one of the attackers also falls. The soldiers decide to charge the ambushers instead ...

The charge results in two more attackers down as the survivors withdraw.

And the rest of the force enters the city as the first section takes up a defensive position in case of another attack.

Ruins in the jungle

Crossing the stream the Type 97 TE-KE tankettes stopped as the path lead to the entrance to a ruined city, the low surviving walls into the jungle on both sides. The tankettes stopped at the entrance as the officer and his command group came up to evaluate the situation.

No point sending the TE-KEs in - not a good place for tanks! The 1st Section got the job of checking the entrance out...

Along the overgrown passageway they went. At the it opened, as the section started to spread out, they came across the remains of a cyclopean temple-like structure ahead of them.

Shots fired! Figures clad in brown robes egged on by a strange purple robed figure! Caught by surprise the section readied itself for combat...

Somewhere in the Pacific

A couple of under strength infantry sections and three light tanks edge their way alone an overgrown jungle track in an attempt to outflank Allied forces...

All goes well until they are slowed by a stream crossing the path...

The terrain gave me a chance to use a load of one foot square terrain pieces I bought at a convention many years ago. Probably about thirty years ago.

Cthulhu

I think it's fair to say I'm more of a converter than a sculptor. Still, one project I've been thinking of seemed worth a try - though it's also part conversion anyway.

Thing is, never found a decently sized Cthulhu. On the other hand, there was a toy octopus I had that I thought I could do something with. So...

So the basis of the 'Conversion'/scatchbuild was a toy octopus and the wings off  a toy dragon.

The body is a mix of plasticene, green stuff and wood glue oversprayed a couple of times with textured paint.

Size-wise it's a lot better but would have been a lot more impressive if it had been standing upright. Plenty of vegetation helps to hide the crude bodywork.

The bigger size shows better here. Now, it looks like a serious monster.

I think it's worth mentioning that my original thought was just to see if the project was practical - I hadn't intended to finish it it, just wanted to see if it would work. Hence the body is very crude and rushed. I also gave it tentacles as front limbs rather than arms.

Personal view? Crude, not the best bit of modelling in the world, but effective and it works. It certainly gives me the incentive to do a more careful standing version later.

Pulp? You have to have at least 1 cult!

Elheim figures. I might get another set of the foot soldiers, probably not quite enough here.
Left plain and definitely wargames standard.

I painted the cult leader as a fishman ( or whatever - at the moment sticking with the name given in the ship's log rather than Mythos...)

Three riflemen - more useful than tommy guns to me!

Still working out their storyline - got three ideas so far! And do I wait until I've got more of the figures?

RAFM MU Expedition to the Antarctic

Quietly working through various RAFM figures - these were bought in two lots, one several years ago when I simply bought one of each set of RAFM Cthulhu Classics (but missed the big boxed sets) then another a couple of years ago as I started building up Newhaven. One sled just didn't seem to be enough if I wanted to do an expedition!
At a distance, don't look too bad...

Pity about close up - especially obvious I can't paint huskies.

Going to Work in Newhaven

I've started the 'official paper' playtesting of the combat and movement charts to see how they work in reality - later, I'll go to the board and check out how well the movement charts work. It may need two sets of movement depending on the scenario - some scenariois will just use one or two of my A3 boards, others may use the whole 6 by 4 foot set up and I'd rather have 2 sets of movement rates than just one that leads to a very, very slow game on the large table. Initially, I'm just doing them with the basic factors rather than adding variable dice rolls.

So, first one, Going to Work in Newhaven:

Being dependent on the tides, shipping on the Miskatonic is a twenty four hour activity. As a consequence, my job often required me to either start or leave work in the middle of the night.

From my apartment on West Street I would walk to Main Street, turning right at the graveyard. Past the graveyard, a left through Peabody Park was my usual route taking me to the river. Hence I would go right along the river, past the diner to the warehouses where I worked.

Being a good cautious Catholic, and well aware of possible night time travails, I naturally made a point of always carrying both pistol and crucifix!

On the night in question I was due to start my shift at midnight. I left home early at a steady pace, intending to leave plenty of time for coffee and a light meal at the diner. It was a fine night, quite light with a full moon allowing good visibility. Though I naturally took my flashlight there was sufficient illumination even in those areas away from the few places covered by street lighting.

As I approached the graveyard I was aware of a presence. Drawn through the gates I could see a figure sitting on a large tomb. It appeared to be a girl or young lady; concerned for her safety I approached calling out to her. She faced me, moved off the tomb and approached. It was with a sense of horror I now noticed the wings… the being was a lamia! Quickly I held my crucifix before me as I retreated, feeling the pressure of the lamia’s will as it attempted to ensnare me… With a tremendous effort I threw off the pressure in my mind and managed to get through the gates. Fortunately the lamia appeared unable to leave the confines of the churchyard and I was free to continue.

(A lamia is classed as a monster with a (psychic!) attack of 3 and defence of 2. The crucifix and his faith meant that the worker had an attack value 3 and defence value of 3 against monsters - the crucifix is considered to be a hand weapon against a supernatural monster. Against a physical attack it would not. Assuming both sides throw the same dice score, the lamia attack (3) was met with a defence of 3 and the attack was a draw – it failed. The worker had an attack value of 3 against a monster defence value of 2 so his attack succeeded – the worker was therefore able to break away and continue his journey to work).

Gathering my breath as I walked through the park I was aware of the bushes and trees rustling. To my horror I realised that one of the trees was moving towards me… Again I was forced to beat a hasty retreat from danger. Happily, I had seen it in time and was easily able to outpace the monster and leave the park safely…

(Walking trees are classed as either large monsters or leviathans.  Depends on the size of the tree, but in a small park it’s a slow large monster. Still, if he had been trapped by it, His attack/defence value of 2/1 would have been a problem against the 4/3 value of the tree. Best to run and not get that close. This particular ‘incident’ caused me to look closer at the combat factors of leviathans and I have changed them.)

The walk along the river was happily uneventful – it had been several months since those stories about strange batrachian looking people attacking strangers. As I thankfully drank my coffee I resolved to leave Newhaven at the earliest opportunity, or at least move to the day shift – as it happened, an opening appeared shortly after in the company offices in Innsmouth, so I gratefully accepted…

If you go down to the woods tonight...

It's a good idea to have some woods. As well as some general purpose dotted around the town trees.

So I've bought a load cheap Chinese trees.

Several different sizes up to 6" -  about 30 scale feet or so.  They cost £10.22 in total.

For this lot - 45 unbased trees. I'm basing them on 2p pieces.

Of course, a few monsters make the woods a bit scarier, so some Garrison S&S Tree Demons. Some of the flock has come off the trees in transit so I've glued some of it on the demons as added foliage.
