Warrior Thracians and other light infantry

I put the Thracians together as two units 18 strong - my 'standard' 6 element units.

I kept the flesh and black tunic, everything else was overpainted. I originally considered painting the cloaks in a tartan scheme but remembered that I wasn't out to do complicated designs... the original figures had a rather strange hair design. I painted hair underneath and the original 'hair' I did in red leather to represent fox skin caps!

There were also a few other odd figures...

I left the weird flesh colour... also added a shield to give a couple of elements of long spear/shield armed peltasts. I should probably have given these fox skin caps but left it so they could represent any Greek peltast, not just Thracians.

Not really anything to say about these two elements...

Finally, some archers. These were the only figures I didn't do any further work on.

Warrior Greek cavalry

I have a few Warrior cavalry, just about enough to do a couple of bases...

Not bad, though spears would have been better if replaced - they aren't good. Horse legs a bit iffy - tried bending them back into shape a bit. Design of the horses is pretty reasonable though.

Refurbishing' old Warrior Greek pikes

Bought this lot about three years ago - finally getting round to refurbishing the pikes...

The first lot of 48. Actually 47 because I miscounted... one of the rear bases only has 3 figures at the moment. Correcting that mistake by painting an extra figure to the next unit...

There are two different poses - this is the front rank pikeman (not going to call them phalangites!)

And these are the back rank figures.

There's also an officer (acquired separately) hidden there somewhere. This photo gives an idea of how crude the figures are, as well as the fact they don't fit very well on DBX bases!

More Warrior Immortals

By adding some Garrison officers and standard bearers I was able to muster another understrength regiment of Immortals.

There were 12 figures with levelled spears and 6 with upright spears - most of the others were in multiples of 5. Had I given all three elements an officer and standard bearer I could have made three full strength elements!

A close up of the two different figures...

...And rear view...

Bactrians and (?) Medes

First two units of the Warrior figures painted. As these figures are in 10s I've used Garrison officers and standard bearers with them - you can easily see how well the two ranges fit together.

The first unit is a Bactrian unit so I've decorated the tunics.  Quite nice figures but the spears won't behave themselves!

Next figure doesn't match any figure from the book and I'll just be using as generic hill tribes or something. As such I've given them plain, rather dowdy, costumes. Both units seem to have come out OK.

Continuing with Macedonians

A few posts ago I mentioned that some of 'my' Macedonians and Egyptians were getting a bit neglected. Well, the Egyptians still are, but at least I'm doing something about the Macedonians...

Firstly, quick photos/poor lighting, sorry about the quality.

This shot shows the non-Harry phalanx units. The front row includes the main Garrison converted units. The back row includes rehashed Hinchliffe (1974ish?), early Minifigs from about 1970, the initial batch of Garrison conversions, then a couple of small units of (presumed) Warrior phalangites.

Until the madness of buying all Harry's figures, the three Garrison phalanx units were intended to be the main component of my 'modern' Macedonian/Successor force, and it was planned to have another 'line' unit. Back in the 70s I tended to cut down the length  of my pikes for easier use. That pike length has been retained for these figures. Thus the front figure, acting as a Successor/elite phalangite, is simply the G16 Boeotian hoplite with a slightly longer pike. Chances are I would have made more of these as Successors. The blue helmeted lot are the line phalangites, bringing up the rear the newly painted Asian Pantodapoi. I'll also probably use them as Egyptian phalangite though! This figure is quite basic but does the job - it's a conversion of G3, the hoplite wearing the Corinthian helmet.

The Elites have naturally been given a more ornate shield design than the rest.

One thing I'm trialling with the phalagites. Due to the sheer numbers of the things I have - about 300 here and probably about the same useable number from Harry - I'm trying out putting some figures 3 deep on 60mm deep bases. Should leave movement and setting up easier, meanwhile I still have more than enough on single depth bases for other small scale uses.

The Hinchliffe figures previously mentioned have been 'standardised' to a degree. Basically, the white pike unit has been slightly repainted to fit in with the others and put together as a 48 strong phalanx. As these originated the 'short' pike, probably should have appeared earlier.

An old Indian DBA army

My armies have been developed over the years for lots of different reasons. This one was made from figures that were lying around to provide an army for my son when he started wargaming. It was a long time ago.

So, nothing fancy, a mix of early Warrior, early PB Minifigs, Britain's elephants and chariots converted from Airfix.  Very basic paint jobs.
The elephants are Britain's with Minifigs PB crews. Costumes are rather garish to suggest rich silks and metallic threads.
The chariots are Roman horses on a built up Ancient British base. Wheels would be from something like Civil War artillery with alternate spokes removed. Crew are Warrior, the charioteers being spearmen with shields removed.
 The cavalry are early PB.
Infantry are again Warrior.
The army itself did quite well as I recall. I have vague memories of one battle where I was using Ancient Brits against it and my warbands kept bouncing of the elephants. I think Steven won that one.
