Working on rebasing the Thebans

 I have quite a few different Thebans, but intend using G17, the Theban hoplite with the archaic shield. I have two 48 figure units of these - one I painted, one I got from Harry but (until now) never got round to rebasing!

Incidentally, Blogger has gone over the new format and, when I try to add labels, comes up with 'include more letters to see label suggestions'... so I haven't managed to work out how to add all those labels I'd set up... Plus the list of Followers still hasn't come back! (At the moment I can still 'revert' back to the old system to put labels in - but soon won't be able to)

Probably only use half of these, but nice to see them all set out.

Re cavalry, the choice is light or medium... probably go for the mediums but still thinking about it.

This lot are ex-Harry. Strangely, got 48 of them, paperwork says there should be 24!

 

Nicely painted but the figure design doesn't lend itself to 20mm deep bases.

Have to admit, prefer the painting on Harry's.

 Well, doing this was a slog. The new version of Blogger is not nice... did labels under old system, pictures under new. Hence the haphazard spacing!  Not really certain if blogging is viable under this version!

Thebes (pretty boring really)

I've never been able to paint convincing clubs on shields. To relieve the monotony I tried some with Hercules as the shield blazon instead but that didn't really help. On the other hand, 7/8 hoplite elements suffice, so a couple of armoured infantry as Sacred Band will do - not sure if I'll do a full 4 element Sacred Band unit.

One problem of fixing figures on bases randomly is that it sometimes goes a bit wrong - hadn't intended to put 3 Hercules figures on the same base. Not sure I like the black silhouette version.

On the other hand, the clubs aren't much better.

So, another 24 figures waiting to be painted - probably as Athenians. That gives me a range of shield blazons - obviously alpha and owls, probably also some bull heads to represent the Minotaur and Theseus, perhaps a few with triremes to represent the wooden walls... seems a lot more interesting than Thebes.

More Greeks - Thebes

One of the nice things about only worrying about things you want to do rather than things other people want you to do is that you can take liberties.

OK, these Thebans carry the archaic Greek shield that went out of use around(?) 500BC. The cavalry, on the other hand, carry shields when their historical counterparts went without until about the mid 3rd Century BC.  Well, it's my army so...

This force is half by me, half bought. Red hoplites and cavalry are all my own work (cast and painted only, won't pretend I designed them.) Other hoplites and infantry bought ready painted.

 The Sacred Band are supposed to have formed up 50 deep. As there were only 300 of them, that's a narrow frontage.

No doubt these hoplites, Garrison 20mm G17, will be supplemented by my units of G16 Boeotian Hoplite With Pike, Boeotian Helmet - just not yet.

Cavalry figures are 20mm Garrison GC 5 Cavalryman Leather Armour, Spear And Shield, Attic Helmet Crested. Officer and standard bearer figures are G1 (mounted general), GC1 and GC2.

I use this figure because I didn't want 'good' cavalry. The old WRG designation of medium cavalry seems to fit.

No reason for giving the Thebans this unit of archers other than the fact that they matched one of the hoplite units.
