E L L Y N I E M A N & R I K K E R T Z U I D E R V E L D - D E D R A A D V A N A R I A D N E

Elly Nieman and Rikkert Zuiderveld, better known as Elly and Rikkert were a Dutch stoner hippie couple. They were introduced to each othet at a party somewhere in the late 60's by the father of an old friend of mine, Dutch film maker Job Pannekoek... They came out with this album in 1971 with their buddy Hans (Appie) Sleijpen, and it's a great, total DIY album and there's one song on it that became a huge hit in Holland, ""De Kaugomballenboom" (The chewinggumballtree)... In 1976 they became devote Christians, they're still together, still active and they released tons of albums, mostly Christian songs and songs for kids and tons of books for kids.... Here's their website: And here's some fairly recent pictures of them:

FERRE GRIGNARD - RING, RING, I GOT TO SING / WE WANT WAR

Ferre Grignard (13 March 1939 – 8 August 1982) was a Belgian skiffle-singer from Antwerp who surprised the world in 1965 with his international hits "Ring Ring, I've Got To Sing" and "My Crucified Jesus". Ferre Grignard renounced his middle-class origins and at the end of the 1950s he went to the Antwerp art academy. He was unsuccessful as a painter, but he could play the guitar and sing the blues and his performances in "De Muze", a famous Antwerp jazz café, made him well known in the Antwerp artists' world. The young generation accepted him as the first Belgian protest singer, because of his hippie-like appearance and the content of his songs. In 1965 he performed at the first "Jazz-festival" at Bilzen. He was discovered by Hans Kusters (the same man who owned the record company HKM that is now producing the music of the Belgian band Clouseau). His "Ring Ring, I've Got To Sing" and "My Crucified Jesus" conquered the world with their mixture of skiffle, folk music and blues. At the height of his career he even performed at the Paris Olympia. The Belgian artist George Smits was a member of Ferre Grignard's band around that time. After the ensuing international success, things started to go wrong. He went to live in a mansion, where he made music, painted and partied with the 20 friends who lived with him. He also refused to fill in his tax-forms, so after a while all royalties went directly to taxes. He neglected his career and was soon forgotten by his fans. A comeback in the seventies failed. He died in Antwerp of throat cancer in 1982. At that time he was living in an attic without heating, surrounded by empty bottles. Ferre Grignard lies buried at the Schoonselhof cemetery, among many of Antwerp's most important citizens. It alsosays on the cover that he was thrown out of the army after a year of being conscripted and he then lived "among the negroes" in the US for a few years and then was expelled due to his anarchist and anti-war attitude.... Great music, think Bob Dylan.... GET IT HERE Enjoy!

CHINESE INSTRUMENTAL FOLK MUSIC - SOLO FLUTE PIECES: JOURNEY TO KUSU

Lovely Chinese insrumental folk music album and here's what our friend Yoshio said about this record: Journey to Kusu is a solo flute piece composed by Jiang Xianwei in 1962. It is a piece of music describing the scenery of the south of the Yangtze River, expressing the beautiful scenery of the historical city of Suzhou and the delightful mood of the people during their visit. Based on the music of Kusu, the piece expresses the typical music of Jiangnan and the lyricism, elegance, lightness and liveliness of the southern flute. The melody is mainly pentatonic, with few jumping intervals and little contrast in rhythm and strength. The division of free and irregular phrases makes use of different traditional folk music materials; for example, traditional ensembles such as the Jiangnan Silk and Bamboo, often in the form of variations, push up the mood of the piece gradually, so that the piece ends in a warm atmosphere. And the repetition of the slow theme after the fast movement, forming a three-part structure, is different from the traditional music. Three-part style with introduction: Introduction: Scattered Plate Slow Plate: more long tones with ornamentation, characteristic of Kunqu's lingering and soft style Middle section: Allegro, with frequent irregular syncopations in the lively and enthusiastic sixteenth note melody. Adagio: the theme of the adagio is reproduced, with small additions of flowers in between. Thanks Yoshio! GET IT HERE Enjoy!

A JOYOUS DAY: CHINESE FOLK MUSIC

Chinese folk music... A Joyous Day This piece was composed by Ma Shenglong in 1958. It is an early pipa composition in the modern three-part style. The piece depicts the joyous mood of the people on a happy day when they are beating gongs and drums. The piece begins with a short introduction, using a combination of sweeps, half-wheels and picks to simulate the rhythms of folk gongs and drums, which is cheerful and enthusiastic. The theme that emerges is from the Henan folk song ‘Eight Duan Jin’, a tune later rewritten as ‘August Laurel Blossoms Bloom Everywhere’, which is smooth and joyful. The first part of the piece is made up of a contrasting sequence of offerings, splits, and overtone variations, and passing phrases. The second part of the slow movement, still on the basis of the original theme, slows down the tempo, and uses the long wheel to express the stretching and beautiful melody, which expresses people's inner joy. The third part is the recapitulation part, the melody of the drum and gong rhythm is more exciting and enthusiastic, and finally, the use of fast melodic rhythm pushes the piece to the climax. This piece is characterised by the unity of the material, the smoothness of the tune, and the combination of pipa techniques. Thanks for the information Yoshio! GET IT HERE Enjoy!

STEVEDORE STEVE - I'VE LIVED

For many, many years of his life Canadian Stevedore Steve was doing the Jack Kerouac, traveling all over Canada, the United States and Mexico, riding box-cars, hitch-hiking or just walking, doing odd jobs along the way. When he died, at age 80 he donated his body to science.... The songs on this album explain, he writes, how he lived.... At times you would swear you're listening to Johnny Cash, but not when you hear the one small hit he had way back with the song Lester The Lobster..... GET IT HERE Enjoy!
