I don't know why I was surprised

I recently returned to my plan to chase down the Dodgers I'm missing in old Heritage sets.   In almost all cases these are short-prints, and I quickly lose enthusiasm after seeing prices and drop the chase for months before coming back to it. But this time when I visited, the prices weren't bad -- it's just there weren't a lot available.   I added the Kaz Ishii short-print from 2004 Heritage. Look at him roll his eyes at those short-printing ways.     I also added another famous Japanese pitcher for the Dodgers, maybe you heard of him. Heritage short-printed his card, too, in 2005 Heritage.   While I was searching for other Heritage SPs from this time period I happened across an insert from 2005 that I didn't have, so I threw that in my cart and called it a night.     This card recognizes his two home runs on the final day of the 1956 season that clinched the pennant for the Dodgers.      I knew the photo used on the front seemed ...

Not your average Joe

For the second time in a month, I received an email from out of nowhere from a generous collector named Joe. Now this Joe was not this Joe . It was a different Joe. But the package I received from this Joe was no less generous than the one I received from that Joe. And now I'm searching for cards to send to both Joes . I've got to tell you, Joes , you're making things a tad challenging in the card department. But you've certainly gotten my attention. But with Gint -a-Cuffs and some vacation plans all going on at the same time, that's a bit shaky. But I'll get to it. Don't you worry 'bout a thing. Part 1 will address the Dodger cards. You already saw one of them , although Jackie wasn't dressed in Dodger blue on that card. Here are most of the others: F...

He loves the '80s

About a week or two ago, I stumbled upon John from the U.K.'s blog, The Pursuit of 80's(ness). I don't know what took me so long. I knew he wrote for A Pack a Day. I just never put it all together. I never realized he was such a fan of 1980 Topps cards. I found that interesting, because as a kid in 1980 I tried to collect an entire set for the first time. Before then, I was just happy with acquiring some cards. But by 1980, I had matured enough to know what GREED was. And I wanted it all, everything Topps had to offer. I came close to getting it all, about 14 cards short. And I didn't pick up those 14 cards until a couple of years ago. But how satisfying it was to complete that set. I thought of all of this when I was looking at The Pursuit of 80's(ness). Then, like magic, a package arrived for me on Friday. It was from John! Without one word of warning, I had received more Dodgers cards! Included in the tidy stack were a few 1980 Dodgers, like Johnny Oates above....
